Abstract

The main obstacle in the development of food crop production and horticulture is the attack of S. frugiperda larvae. Pest control using chemical insecticides has a long-term negative impact. The biological control of Spodoptera frugiperda larvae is accomplished by utilizing B. thuringiensis bacteria. This study aims to determine the best B. thuringiensis isolate for killing S. frugiperda larvae, to identify the most effective concentration of B. thuringiensis suspension, and to ascertain the mortality rate of S. frugiperda larvae. The design of this study was a randomized block design (RBD) with two factors. The first factor was the type of B. thuringiensis isolate, consisting of four isolates. Larval mortality data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and further tested with the Duncan test. The results obtained showed the highest average mortality of S. frugiperda larvae using isolates Bt3BP14 and Bt4TSR6. These two isolates had the highest average mortality on the third day. Bt3BP14 and Bt4TSR6 isolates have high potential in controlling S. frugiperda larvae, with an average mortality proportion of 86,67% and 66,67% observed over three days. The best doses of B. thuringiensis suspension for killing S. frugiperda larvae were 15 ml and 20 ml. It can be concluded that B. thuringiensis isolates can be used as natural biological control agents against S. frugiperda larvae that attack food crops and horticulture.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effect of different withering methods on physicochemical and organoleptic properties of Liberica coffee leaf tea (Coffea liberica) and to identify the optimal treatment. The experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five withering treatments, including no withering, room temperature withering for 10 h, air withering for 10 h, oven withering at 60°C for 30 min, and steaming for 2 min, each with four replications. The observed parameters included powder moisture content, pH, color (L*, a*, b*), antioxidant activity, total phenols, total tannins, flavonoids, and sensory attributes, namely color, aroma, acidity, taste, aftertaste, and overall acceptance. The results showed that withering method significantly affected color, moisture content, antioxidant activity, total phenols, total tannins, flavonoids, and organoleptic attributes related to aftertaste and overall acceptance, while pH, aroma quality, acidity, and taste were not significantly affected. The non-withered sample demonstrated the highest antioxidant activity and total phenolic content. The room temperature withering for 10 h produced antioxidant activity (57.59%) that was not significantly different from the non-withered sample, but offered superior sensory performance. This treatment produced a dark orange (brownish) infusion with L* (45.75), a* (29.25), and b* (49.50), the highest overall hedonic acceptance (3.72), and the most preferred color (3.84). In conclusion, withering at room temperature for 10 h represents the optimal processing method for producing Liberica coffee leaf tea with a balanced combination of functional properties and consumer acceptability.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Paracetamol is one of the analgesics and antipyretics that are widely traded freely, so it is possible that the use is not according to the recommended dose and consumption time. This can trigger liver damage and changes in blood biochemistry. Green tea has components such as antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and hepatoprotectors. The study aimed to analyze the effect of green tea extract on the blood biochemistry of rats induced by paracetamol. Methods: Laboratory experimental research with the Post-Test Control Group Design method, using 25 male Wistar rats, applying random sampling. Twenty-five rats were divided into 5 groups: K- (control), K+ (positive control), and treatment groups with green tea extract, respectively 175 mg (T1), 350 mg (T2), and 700 mg/kg bw (T3) for 24 days. The treatment group and K+ received paracetamol 600 mg/kg bw on the 14th day for 10 days, and green tea extract was still given. Data, including aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol, and leukocyte counts, were analysed using ANOVA and the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test. Results: GTE significantly (p-value <0.05) reduced leukocytes and AST, but inadequate paracetamol induction failed to elevate ALT and lipids, masking GTE’s measurable impact on those specific biochemical parameters. Conclusion: Providing green tea extract was effective in declining the number of leucocytes and AST levels. The study concluded that green tea extract has the potential to influence the biochemical profile of rats induced by paracetamol. Further research is needed regarding the dose and period of administration and exposure.
