Abstract

Teachers usually use literary texts in their English classes. They use such materials to teach reading comprehension but rarely combine them with writing. It is a big challenge for teachers to integrate reading and writing activities in the English classroom. Such action is demanding on the one hand, but it is challenging on the other hand. It is appealing because the teachers will burden much checking the students' reading comprehension and their response writing. It is challenging for teachers and students since it integrates reading and writing. This research was done in the context of English as a foreign language, where one hundred and twenty students of the "Literary Appreciation" course at the English Department of a private university in Semarang in 2020. In this research, we examined the students' attitudes toward applying imaginative re-creation in teaching English using short stories. Having done reading comprehension activities, the students wrote texts based on the short story they were assigned to read. The activity is called imaginative re-creation. At the end of the semester, a hundred and twenty students were involved in this research. Only forty-five students responded to the questionnaires. The questionnaires provided ten questions concerning the attitude toward applying imaginative re-creation. The results showed that the index is 3.7 indicating a strong attitude toward applying imaginative re-creation. From the findings, it can be concluded that most students had strong attitudes toward using literary text in English teaching, even though teachers should be aware of the problem that might arise during the implementation of the task.

Abstract

As a part of Research & Development, needs analysis cannot be separated from the overall process. This paper was aimed at analyzing the need in developing an English e-book of Berau’s and Paser’s folklore by using the Flipbook Maker application for Extensive Reading (ER) classes of university students based on the perspective of the lecturers. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative approach in investigating the needs to meet the research objective. She used a questionnaire to collect the data from 8 English lecturers in five universities in East Kalimantan. The research finding showed that almost all the lecturers understood that ER is a program that can improve students’ skills in every aspect of English. They implemented ER to make their students love reading. They suggested that the material of ER should be non-authentic material including culture or local wisdom. They thought that the material should be a combination of printed and displayed (e-book) material. All of the lecturers suggested that ER should be implemented at schools to support English teaching and learning, and teachers need to provide them with some interesting books or watch videos or movies with English subtitles.

Abstract

The teaching and learning process has changed from in-person instruction to online learning during the Covid 19 outbreak. EFL lecturers should utilize a variety of media for teaching English, particularly for instruction on productive skills. The paper aims to investigate the Indonesian EFL lecturers’ views on utilizing media for English productive skills instructions amidst online learning. This study emphasized the implementation of the media for teaching productive skills, how to assess students' productive skills, how students' motivation during online learning, and students' ability to use clause complexes in English productive skills. This research relied on a qualitative study. A structured questionnaire was employed to collect the data. Eight lecturers from several universities contributed the information as research data. The current study yielded a range of findings. First, various media were employed for synchronous and asynchronous learning in order to discuss the teaching materials, give quizzes, and submit students’ assignments. Second, assessments for speaking instruction were conducted through students’ performances utilizing video conferencing tools, but assessments for writing instruction were conducted through asynchronous learning using Google Classroom or the university's LMS. Third, during online learning, students have less motivation in productive skills classes and their ability to use clause complexes in productive skills is decreasing.

Abstract

Computer-assisted language learning (CALL) achieves the outstanding position in the field of pedagogy of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Its promising existence has encouraged foreign language learners to interact authentically in the computer-based English learning. Web-based language learning (WBLL) as the successor of CALL has emerged and is gaining its popularity as an online learning platform in the field of language education today. WBLL is able to improve the competence of learners and become a convincing interactive learning medium in confirming better quality of language input and output through the internet technology. Although not a few studies have discussed Web 2.0 technology, the majority of their findings may only review the students’ and teachers’ perceptions in using the technology; instead, not too many findings focus on how WBLL impacts learners’ language skills, more specifically EFL learners’ oral performance. This paper purports to review empirical studies using WBLL for enhancing EFL learners’ speaking skill in addition to its benefits for enhancing learners’ motivation and providing stimulus to alleviate their anxiety while speaking with highly interactive learning environment outside the classroom.

Abstract

Teachers who engage in information, media, and technology must be critical thinkers with a broad perspective in order to prepare their students for the literacy demands of the twenty-first century. Language teachers' roles are crucial in developing students' literacies so that they can adapt to digital technologies in education. We've been teaching pre-service teachers about media literacy and educational technology in a variety of subject areas, as well as assisting them in incorporating new media and technologies into their curriculum design. The purpose of this study is to assess the level of digital literacy of pre-service teachers at Universitas Pancasakti Tegal and to investigate their perceptions of technology in language teaching. This study used a mixed method research design to investigate how pre-service teachers use digital technologies in the teaching and learning process during the practice of teaching in the Micro Teaching class. Furthermore, by investigating digital technologies in language teaching, pre-service teachers' perceptions are revealed. The research involved 40 pre-service teachers who are tested using Ferrari's model of digital competence areas such as information, communication, content creation, safety, and problem solving. The findings for qualitative data collection were based on classroom observation, interviews, and surveys. The findings reveal that higher levels of digital literacy in pre-service teachers influence their performance in integrating technology into their teaching process, and they are assured in motivting students to increase digital literacy skills. Their positive attitudes toward using technology in language teaching raise awareness of the importance of digital literacies and digitally literate people in developing digital literacy skills for survival in the digital age.

Information and communication technology (ICT) literacy is crucial for students in order to better prepare them for the digital learning era. It facilitates the development of self-directed learning (SDL). The goal of this study is to describe the implementation of law students’ ICT literacy and self-directed learning (SDL) abilities through E-Module in learning process. A qualitative approach and a descriptive method are used in the study. This study’s primary data were results of the ICT literacy assessment questionnaires, and secondary data were terms of ICT literacy and self-directed learning, and several interviews with law students. The data were collected through open questionnaires that were distributed online via a google form and analyzed through the process of data reduction, data presentation, data collection, and verification. The results of the study note that, the student's knowledge of information and communication technology (ICT) allows them to learn independently using an e-module. Students gain access to the E-Module in order to complete lecture assignments using their knowledge of information and communication technology (ICT). The fact that they are accessing an electronic module reflects their level of self-directed learning (SDL), as well as their literacy and self-directed learning support achievement.

Abstract

The University students’ problems in learning listening give an impact on students’ learning and achievement. This research objective is to scrutinize the role of Dynamic Assessment (DA) approach in enhancing the University students’ ability in listening to learn. Previous researchers argue that DA Approach motivates students’ critical thinking and activate students’ prior knowledge in listening comprehension class. By using a quasi-experimental design, an author wants to find out whether DA is effective or not in enhancing the students’ competence in listening class. The experimental and control class was designed to apply the treatment activities in listening to learn class. 40 participants of EFL students at private University in Semarang were divided into 20 in the experimental class and 20 for the control class. The data for investigation was taken from pre-test and posttest for both classes. DA Approach was applied in experimental and traditional approach was in control class. The SPSS used to analyze the data to see the descriptive analysis that is significance or not. Then, the result displayed based on SPSS tabulation that DA Approach was significant for EFL students in listening to learn ability.
