Abstract

Fraction division is one of the most difficult subjects in elementary school. Not only elementary students but many prospective teachers don’t understand the fraction division concept yet—most of them using a keep-change-flip algorithm to solve fraction division problems. A study using rectangle representation was conducted by us to prospective teachers. This study aims to see whether this rectangle representation will make prospective teachers understand or not. To do so, we made a mixed-method study with 80 prospective teachers as participants. The results show that 53,75% of prospective teachers use the keep-change-flip algorithm without understanding the concept of fraction division, and just 15% of prospective teachers understand fraction division. We assume that most prospective teachers still can’t imagine how fraction division works in a real-life context. They remember what they used to do to finish the fraction division problem that their teacher has introduced in primary school. Based on the results, we conclude that the study with rectangle representation still needs an improvement, whether the teacher’s explanation or the rectangle media.

Abstract

This research aimed to develop a didactic design of the concept of the surface area of a flat-sided prism by considering the stages of van Hiele’s theory as a learning trajectory. The didactic design of the concept of the surface area of a flat-sided prism based on van Hiele’s theory has been adapted to the pandemic situation and implemented to online learning. The research method employed was a qualitative method with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The initial step in this research was to test the concept of the surface area of a flat-sided prism on 53 9th-grade students for the 2019/2020 school year to identify learning obstacles. Following the identification of the learning obstacles, an initial didactic design was then drawn up by applying the phases in van Hiele’s model of geometric thinking. The didactic design prepared was subsequently implemented online to 8th-grade junior high school students. The results of the implementation of the didactic design were analyzed as the final product. The conclusion from this research is that by using a didactic design that considers the stages of van Hiele geometry in understanding the concept of surface area of a flat-sided prism, it can help students understand the concept of a flat-sided prism correctly. It was found that students' understanding of the concept of the surface area of a prism improved from visual level to informal deduction.

Abstract

Continuous treatment is needed in developing mathematical dispositions. Even at the higher education level, some prospective teachers still need proper treatment in developing their mathematical dispositions. This study tries to reveal instructors' role in fostering their students' mathematical disposition to better didactical situations. This study is qualitative research with a content analysis approach. The results obtained in this study indicate that the instructor's role is still needed in the classroom regardless of the students' mathematical disposition. Instructors ' expected learning role becomes diverse based on the mathematical disposition grouping between good, moderate, and less mathematical dispositions. For prospective teachers who have an excellent mathematical disposition, the instructor's role is to confirm a theorem, confirm answers to questions, and the benefits of contextual topics. For prospective teachers who have a satisfactory mathematical disposition, the instructor's role is to motivate, direct the learning, and keep the classroom conductivity. Whereas for prospective teachers deficient in mathematical disposition, the instructor's role is needed as a direct learning source, structured learning director, and an enjoyable learning rhythm.

Abstract

Numerous similar studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of problem-based learning models (PBL) on students' mathematical critical thinking skills. However, the findings from these studies are inconsistent. Highlighting this gap, this study comprehensively evaluates the effectiveness of implementing the PBL model on junior high school students’ critical thinking skills. This meta-analysis study was conducted by analyzing a sample of 15 journal papers that met the feasibility. Empirical data collection uses several journal search engines, and the instruments used are coding categories. Data analysis to obtain effect size value was performed with Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software, and the estimation method used a random-effect model. Overall, the results showed that the effect size of PBL model implementation on mathematical critical thinking skills of junior high school students is 0.970, which means the PBL model's implementation had a high effect on students' critical thinking skills. Besides, the effect size of implementing the PBL model on junior high school students' critical thinking skills did not differ based on differences in class, year of study, and sample size. However, there were significant differences in effect sizes between study groups based on treatment duration. Thus, PBL will achieve a higher level of effectiveness, taking into account the treatment duration.

Abstract

Abstract Until now, hundreds of studies on students' mathematical literacy skills have been presented in the form of literature supported by the use of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model. In the literature, there are many reports with varying findings. This meta-analysis study was conducted to examine the overall effect of using the PBL model on students' mathematical literacy abilities and detect the degree of variation between studies. The ERIC, SAGE, SpringerLink, and Google Scholar databases were examined to achieve research relevant to the study's scope. Entering predetermined keywords into this database found 112 articles published between 2013 and 2020 were analyzed for research purposes. As per the inclusion criteria, 14 articles were eligible for analysis. The analysis tool uses Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software, and the effect size index of the Hedges-g equation obtained is determined based on the random-effect model estimation. The results showed that the overall effect size of the application of PBL on students' mathematical literacy abilities was 0.830, with a standard error of 0.142. These findings indicate that the application of PBL in Indonesia is quite effective because it has a largely positive effect on improving students' mathematical literacy skills. Analysis of the level of study variation was carried out by considering four moderator variables, resulting in significant differences in terms of sources of research publications (Q = 7.571; p <0.05) and differences in education levels (Q = 16.571; p <0.05). It was found that the variables of the study year (Q = 5.962; p> 0.05) and the sample size (Q = 0.277; p> 0.05) did not change the size of the effect of PBL use on students' mathematical literacy abilities. These findings indicate that the PBL model is more effective at higher education levels. This fact contributes to the literature as a consideration in implementing PBL for future mathematical literacy skills.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to reveal and describe how the self-efficacy of mathematics teachers in Cianjur towards the dynamics of learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research was conducted in Cianjur Regency. The methodology used is descriptive quantitative method. The technique of collecting data is through questionnaires given by purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Data analysis uses descriptive statistics which do not aim to make conclusions about the entire population but rather help understand the details of the sample. The results showed that the overall self-efficacy of Mathematics Teachers in Cianjur was in the moderate category. Likewise, four of the seven constructs on teacher self-efficacy are Mathematics Knowledge Self-efficacy (KS), Instructional Self-efficacy (IS), Outcome Expectancy (OE) and Technology Literacy (TL) in the medium category. This means that teachers believe they have the ability to carry out their duties in the midst of a pandemic even though they still need development related to the four constructs. However, the other constructs namely Motivational Self-efficacy (MS), Engagement Self-efficacy (ES), and Disciplinary (as in classroom management) Self-efficacy (DS) are in the high category. This condition shows that teachers are able to provide motivation, students can be actively involved in learning and learning continues to be carried out conducive even though learning is carried out in the midst of a pandemic condition.
