Abstract

AbstractThis study examines the impact of short-form content on TikTok and Instagram Reels on the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) listening skills of high school students. Employing a quantitative correlational research design, the study involved 30 participants who completed pre-tests and post-tests to measure their listening comprehension. Data collection included a questionnaire capturing usage patterns of TikTok and Instagram Reels and a listening comprehension test using TED-Ed videos. The analysis revealed that short-form content positively correlates with improved listening skills, suggesting that these platforms offer engaging and interactive learning opportunities. However, the study also highlighted potential challenges, such as content quality and distraction risks. These findings provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers to leverage digital platforms effectively in EFL instruction, balancing their potential benefits with strategies to address associated challenges.Keywords: digital platforms; EFL; Instagram Reels; listening skills; short-form content; TikTok

Abstract

This study investigates the translation of wordplay and idioms in Chapter 1 of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets into Indonesian, highlighting the linguistic and cultural challenges inherent in translating creative language. Utilizing Delabastita’s (1993) typology for wordplay and Baker’s (2017) strategies for idioms, the research employs a qualitative comparative method. Findings reveal that wordplay is predominantly paraphrased (66.7%), often resulting in diminished humor and stylistic nuance, while idioms are largely translated literally (55.6%), occasionally producing unnatural phrasing. Nonetheless, successful cultural substitutions—such as rendering “a load of rubbish” as “omong kosong besar”—demonstrate effective dynamic equivalence. The study underscores the tension between maintaining textual fidelity and achieving cultural accessibility, offering practical insights for translators working with fantasy literature and linguistically inventive texts.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana Pendidikan Agama Islam (PAI) berkontribusi dalam pembentukan karakter religius siswa melalui pendekatan. Kajian ini menelusuri metode yang paling efektif dalam menanamkan nilai-nilai religius dalam pendidikan serta mengidentifikasi faktor internal dan eksternal yang memengaruhi efektivitas PAI dalam membentuk karakter religius siswa. Berdasarkan telaah terhadap 10 jurnal nasional terpilih yang diterbitkan antara tahun 2019 hingga 2024, ditemukan bahwa metode paling efektif meliputi pembiasaan, keteladanan, internalisasi nilai, nasihat, dan kisah teladan. Metode-metode ini terbukti berhasil ketika didukung oleh lingkungan sekolah yang religius, keterlibatan aktif guru PAI, dukungan orang tua, serta kurikulum yang relevan. Sebaliknya, tantangan seperti kurangnya keteladanan, keterbatasan fasilitas keagamaan, pengaruh negatif media sosial, dan latar belakang siswa yang beragam menjadi hambatan dalam efektivitas PAI. Oleh karena itu, pendekatan yang kolaboratif dan terintegrasi antara sekolah, keluarga, dan masyarakat sangat diperlukan untuk membentuk karakter religius siswa yang kuat dan berkelanjutan.

Abstract

This study explores an EFL student’s lived experience in translating Cranford using a narrative inquiry approach. Although the course initially focused on Cranford, the participant was assigned a different text, offering a distinct perspective on the challenges of literary translation. Data were gathered through reflective interviews and documentation of the translation process. The findings reveal the cognitive, emotional, and strategic aspects involved in literary translation. Initially overwhelmed and intimidated by the text’s complexity, the student gradually developed deeper interpretive skills, cultural sensitivity, and an appreciation for the expressive dimensions of translation. She utilized various strategies, such as close reading, repeated revisions, digital tools, and collaborative feedback. Ultimately, the student redefined translation not merely as a linguistic task but as a form of storytelling and creative interpretation. This study underscores the importance of authentic learning experiences and reflective practice in translator education.

Abstract

Technology requires language teachers to utilize online media, including the internet, websites, social media, and virtual platforms, to enhance teaching and learning. This research focuses on exploring of the Duolingo application on students' English learning. Researchers used qualitative methods to explore students' experiences while learning English with the Duolingo application. The instruments of this research were observation, interviews, and documentation. The study involved 22 students in class 4 of the Islamic Elementary School who expressed positive attitudes toward foreign language learning using the Duolingo online application technology. Learning a foreign language through game-based applications is more effective in fostering enthusiasm for learning, despite complaints from some students who lack internet coverage at home. Researchers hope that, in the future, by conducting this research, English teachers and schools can consider providing technological facilities.

Abstract

The purpose of this experiment were to find out the interaction growth and yield of leaf onion (Allium fistusolum) on the giving of chicken manure fertilizer and plant growth regulator on peat land. Tihs study used Completely Randomized design (CRD) of factorial pattern with two factors. The first factor was applying of chicken manure fertilizer (K) consisting of 4 (four) levels, namely : : K0 = 0 ton.ha-1, K1 = 5 ton.ha-1, K2 = 10 ton.ha-1 and 15 t ha-1. The second factor was the provision of concentration growth regulators (Z) which consists of 4 (four) levels, namely : Z0 = 0 ml L-1 water, Z1 = 1 ml L-1 water, Z2 = 3 ml L-1 water and Z3 = 5 ml L-1 water. . The results showed the interaction of chicken manure and growth regulators affected the number of leaves, fresh weight of plants and dry weight of plants. The combination of 10 t ha-1 chicken manure and 5 ml L-1 water growth regulator treatment was able to increase the yield of spring onions with a fresh weight of 32.67 g plant-1.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery plays a central role in English language development, as it enables learners to understand, use, and communicate ideas effectively. However, many students often struggle to retain and apply new vocabulary, which makes the choice of teaching method especially important. One approach that has gained attention is the Engage, Study, and Activate (ESA) method, which combines motivational activities, structured Study, and communicative practice. This Study aimed to explore English teachers' perceptions of the ESA method in enhancing students' vocabulary mastery and to identify which aspects of the method they found most effective in classroom practice. The research employed a descriptive quantitative design with survey data collected from ten English teachers at the elementary and junior high school levels. The instrument used was a questionnaire consisting of 37 items, adapted from established models, and designed to capture perceptions across the three ESA stages. Responses were measured on a five-point Likert scale and analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean scores, percentages, and standard deviations. Findings revealed that the majority of teachers hold positive perceptions toward the ESA method. Teachers emphasized that the Engage phase helps capture students' attention and motivation, the Study phase provides essential accuracy and explanation of vocabulary, and the Activate phase encourages meaningful use of words through role-plays, discussions, and collaborative activities. The highest-rated item concerned the role of question-and-answer activities in motivating learners (M = 4.60). At the same time, the lowest rating reflected concerns about group work consuming too much classroom time (M = 2.90). Overall, the results suggest that teachers view ESA as an effective, flexible, and student-centered approach for improving vocabulary learning in EFL contexts.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana tindak tutur ilokusi direktif dalam buku The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People karya Stephen R. Covey yang diterjemahkan dari Bahasa Inggris ke Bahasa Indonesia, khususnya pada halaman 56-58 yang membahas tentang Kebiasaan 1: Proaktivitas. Fokus utama penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah daya ilokusi dari tuturan direktif tersebut tetap terjaga dalam proses penerjemahan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan pendekatan pragmatik. Data dikumpulkan secara sengaja dari versi Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Indonesia, kemudian dianalisis melalui tiga tahap: identifikasi tuturan direktif berdasarkan klasifikasi Searle, perbandingan linguistik antara versi asli dan terjemahan, dan evaluasi strategi direktif. perbandingan linguistik antara versi asli dan terjemahan, dan evaluasi strategi penerjemahan berdasarkan teori kesetaraan dinamis dan formal Nida. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar ujaran direktif dari bahasa asli dapat diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa sasaran secara efektif, dengan tetap mempertahankan unsur ajakan dan motivasi. Terjemahan tersebut mempertahankan bentuk imperatif dan interogatif, yang penting dalam menyampaikan maksud persuasif penulis. Studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa kualitas terjemahan tidak hanya bergantung pada keakuratan kata, tetapi juga pada kemampuan untuk mempertahankan daya komunikatif dan kesesuaian budaya.

Abstract

Buku Batu Penyu (Faut Pen – The Stone Turtle) karya Ida Ohoiwutun yang diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Inggris oleh seorang penerjemah berkebangsaan Amerika menjadi objek kajian menarik dalam bidang penerjemahan. Terjemahan karya sastra ini menunjukkan adanya fenomena penambahan makna (gain of information) dan pengurangan makna (loss of information) dalam alih bahasa dari Bahasa Sumber (BSu) ke Bahasa Sasaran (BSa). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis fenomena tersebut guna mengidentifikasi sejauh mana perubahan makna terjadi dan bagaimana hal tersebut memengaruhi pemahaman terhadap teks sasaran. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik observasi dan pencatatan sebagai metode pengumpulan data. Data berupa teks tulis dari versi asli dan versi terjemahan dianalisis berdasarkan prinsip penerjemahan yang dikemukakan oleh Eugene Nida (1975), khususnya terkait dengan prinsip ekivalensi makna. Hasil kajian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi teoritis dalam pengembangan ilmu linguistik dan studi penerjemahan, serta menyusun inventarisasi bentuk-bentuk penambahan dan pengurangan makna yang terjadi dalam proses penerjemahan karya sastra yang sarat nilai budaya.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the concept of female leadership in Islam through an analysis of QS. Al-Nisa [4]: 34 using the Qiraah Mubadalah theory. The methodology employed is qualitative descriptive with a library research approach that analyzes relevant literature and exegesis. The analysis is carried out through three main stages of the Qiraah Mubadalah theory: identifying the universal principles of Islam, interpreting the text inclusively, and applying the ideas in a context relevant to both men and women. The findings indicate that QS. Al-Nisa [4]: 34, often interpreted in a patriarchal manner, can be understood in a more egalitarian light, emphasizing that leadership roles are not exclusive to men but are also open to women with qualities such as responsibility, wisdom, and justice. This approach demonstrates that Islam supports gender equality in various aspects of life, including leadership in households, organizations, and society. The study concludes that leadership in Islam should be based on the values of justice and equality, transcending gender boundaries.
