Abstract

Background: The behavior of Handwashing with Soap (HWWS) is a method of hand hygiene maintenance that protects oneself and those around from diseases. However, the habit of washing hands with soap might not be a routine practice among adolescent students in maintaining daily personal hygiene. The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors related to HWWS behavior among the students of Islamic boarding school based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Method: This research was an observational study with a cross-sectional design. The sample consists of 104 students, aged 10 to 21 years old (53 male and 51 female) selected purposively. The data analysis conducted to assess the strength of relationships between four elements in the TPB and HWWS behavior as well using the contingency coefficient and Spearman correlation. Result: The results of the study show that behavioral intention was strongly associated with HWWS behavior (C = 0.609, p < 0.001). Meanwhile, the four TPB elements had moderate level of associations (C = 0.484 – 0.594, p < 0.001). To conclude, efforts are needed to improve HWWS facilities and strengthen HWWS behavior through programs tailored to the students' characteristics and needs.

Abstract

Background: Menstruation is a natural phenomenon that occurs in all women. However, it can result in various physical and psychological issues, including elevated stress levels. Inadequate management of menstrual hygiene has been demonstrated to result in reproductive health complications. Recently, the popularity of menstrual tracking applications such as the OKY App has increased, with these applications assisting women in the monitoring of their menstrual cycles. However, it is evident that a significant proportion of adolescents, including those enrolled at State Junior High School (SMPN) 30 Surabaya, have not yet adopted this application. The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, observability, and knowledge with the decision and implementation of using the OKY App at SMPN 30 Surabaya.Method: The present research employed a quantitative methodology, adopting a cross-sectional approach and an explanatory research design. The population under study comprised students in 7th and 8th grade at SMPN 30 Surabaya. A simple random sampling technique was used to select 70 respondents. The data was collected via a questionnaire that encompassed a range of variables, including relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, observability, knowledge, decision, and implementation.Result: The findings indicated that relative advantage exhibited no correlation with the decision-making process concerning the utilization of the OKY App. Complexity was related to the decision to use the app but not to its implementation. Therefore, this variable needs to be considered to ensure the app is more easily accepted by potential users. In conclusion, compatibility, trialability, observability, and knowledge are significantly related to both the decision and implementation of using the OKY App. Relative advantage has no impact on either decision or implementation, while complexity only influences the decision-making process but not the actual use of the app. The findings emphasize the significance of addressing user perceptions and understanding in order to enhance the adoption and sustained utilization of menstrual health technology.

Abstract

Background: According to Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN), adolescents are aged 10-24 years and are not married. Indonesian Basic Health Research (RISKESDAS) 2018 showed around 58.8% of adolescents aged 10-19 years had been married and had had a pregnancy. The Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (SDKI) results revealed that risk behavior among male junior and senior high school students was around 8.06%, and female were 4.17%. This study aimed to determine the correlation between the Planning Generation (GenRe) Program knowledge and adolescents’ characteristics with dating experience in East Java Province. Method: This research was a cross-sectional study. Secondary data were collected from the 2019 Program Performance and Accountability Survey (SKAP) and were analyzed descriptively with cross-tabulation and chi-square tests. The risk estimate calculation was also carried out to identify the Odd Ratio (OR). The sample used was 5,300 adolescents in East Java Province after weighting. The research variables consisted of dating behavior in adolescents, age, gender, and adolescents' knowledge about GenRe, HIV/AIDS, drugs, and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and Adolescent Reproductive Health Program. Results: The results showed that 41.80% of adolescents in East Java had dated. There was a significant correlation between dating behavior with adolescents’ knowledge about GenRe, HIV/AIDS, drugs, and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and Adolescent Reproductive Health Program (P-Value = 0.00). Dating behavior also had a significant correlation with age (P-Value = 0.00) and gender (P-Value = 0.00). This study concluded that there was a correlation between dating behavior in adolescents in East Java Province with age, gender, and adolescents’ knowledge about GenRe, HIV/AIDS, drugs, Sexually Transmitted Infection (STIs), and Adolescent Reproductive Health Program. They were strengthening the GenRe program through the introduction, explanation of program activities, and the process of youth involvement. So far, teenagers only know the name of the GenRe program. This action needs to be applied to prevent negative effects caused by dating behavior, such as premarital sex, unwanted pregnancy, and early marriage.

Abstract

Background: Anemia in adolescents, particularly young women, remains a significant public health concern in Indonesia, with low adherence to iron supplementation being a key contributing factor. While previous interventions have focused primarily on individual compliance, the role of teachers as health educators in schools is often overlooked. This study aimed to analyze the determinants of teachers’ intention to provide health education on anemia prevention in Surabaya high schools.Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 119 high school and vocational school teachers within the working area of Tanah Kali Kedinding Health Center, selected through simple random sampling from a total population of 170 teachers. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using multiple logistic regressions to assess the influence of attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control on teachers' intention to deliver health education.Result: The analysis indicated that teacher' attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control did not significantly influence their intention to deliver health education on iron supplementation. This indicates that structural and institutional factors, rather than individual psychological characteristics, primarily influence teachers' involvement in health education delivery.of the risks of e cigarettes. Efforts to enhance adolescent anemia prevention should address structural barriers within the educational system. Policy support from schools and educational authorities is critical to institutionalizing health education as part of the teachers' formal responsibilities.
