Abstract

Outdoor learning, as a form of science pedagogical knowledge, plays a vital role in equipping elementary learners with 21st-century competencies. This qualitative case study explores how outdoor learning at SD Alam Ungaran, a nature-based Islamic elementary school in Indonesia, can foster the development of critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration (4C) skills grounded in a STEAM-integrated thematic curriculum. This study collected data through document analysis, semi-structured interviews, and direct classroom observations. Data was analyzed by emphasizing coding, condensation, and thematic interpretation via NVivo 12 Pro. Findings revealed that outdoor learning significantly enhances 4C skills through experiential and project-based activities embedded in real-world environmental contexts. Students’ critical thinking skill is nurtured through inquiry and direct observation, while the creativity is stimulated through innovative ecological projects. Students developed their communication skills via interactive group discussions and presentations, and reinforced their collaboration skills through cooperative tasks such as market day and eco-projects. Moreover, students enriched their pedagogical science knowledge through the integration of STEAM concepts in authentic field activities. The SD Alam Ungaran integrated STEAM concepts and environmental ethics uniquely further to support the development of students’ holistic moral, emotional, and social skills. The implications of these results can be a best practice for schools to create an integrative curriculum that supports the development of 21st-century skills.

Abstract

Purpose – The cognitive learning outcomes of pupils are essential for assessing student progress and the quality of the implemented learning procedure. Nevertheless, the cognitive learning outcomes of students have not met expectations. This study aimed to assess the cognitive learning outcomes level of fourth-grade elementary pupils and the effect of the SAVI model on enhancing these cognitive learning outcomes.Methodology – The study method was quantitative, utilizing a quasi-experimental posttest-only control group design. The study's sample comprised 56 fourth-grade elementary school students. The selected data gathering method was a test. The assessment is structured as multiple-choice questions. This study utilized parametric statistical analysis to test hypotheses through the t-test. This study's research approach commences with planning, which includes identifying research subjects, conducting a literature review, acquiring research permits, and creating research instruments. In the implementation phase, the researcher delineates the experimental and control groups. Furthermore, after conducting several experiments, the researcher administered a post-test to the experimental and control groups. Following data collection, the researcher analyzed the defined problem and the established research objectives.Findings – This investigation indicated that most cognitive learning outcomes of pupils instructed through the SAVI learning model fell within the good category, and there was a significant disparity in cognitive learning outcomes between pupils instructed using the SAVI model and those receiving conventional instruction.Contribution – This study's results enhance students' cognitive learning outcomes.

Abstract

The teaching materials used at elementary school are still ineffective and less engaging for students. This occurs because classroom teachers rely solely on textbooks as their main reference. This study aims to analyze the development process and evaluate the validity, effectiveness, and practicality of an e-module based on Banyuwangi's local wisdom to produce a high-quality learning medium. The product trial was conducted at elementary school with 10 students. The research subjects included 20 fourth-grade A students as the experimental class and 20 fourth-grade B students as the control class. The data collection instruments used were: (1) questionnaires, (2) learning outcome tests, (3) documentation.  The type of research used is research and development, referring to the Borg and Gall model. The validity of the product validation test, with a score of 92.5, meets the highly feasible criteria. The effectiveness test, with a relative score of 89.9%, meets the very high effectiveness criteria. The practicality test, based on student response questionnaires, scored 95.8, meeting the highly practical criteria. Based on these findings, the development of this e-module is valid, effective, and practical for use in learning activities. This development research has implications for classroom learning, making learning significantly more effective, as seen from the pretest and posttest results compared to the previously used teaching materials (textbooks). The relative effectiveness level of this e-module is 89.9%.

Abstract

Fraction concepts represent one of the most challenging mathematical domains in elementary education, with persistent international difficulties in student comprehension despite their fundamental importance for advanced mathematical proficiency. Traditional instructional methods emphasizing rote memorization have consistently demonstrated limitations in fostering deep conceptual understanding. This study investigated the effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in enhancing elementary students' fraction understanding compared to conventional teaching approaches. A quasi-experimental design with non-equivalent control groups was employed, involving 38 elementary students from nine schools. The experimental group (n=16) received PBL instruction featuring authentic, real-world fraction problems requiring collaborative solution strategies, while the control group (n=22) participated in traditional direct instruction. Data collection utilized pre-test and post-test assessments measuring conceptual and procedural fraction understanding, structured classroom observations documenting engagement and learning behaviors, and student feedback questionnaires capturing motivation and confidence levels. The experimental group demonstrated substantial improvement with a mean increase of 33.25 points (Cohen's d = 3.47), while the control group showed minimal gains (7.78 points, Cohen's d = 0.91). Paired-sample t-tests confirmed statistically significant differences (p < 0.001) favoring the experimental group. Qualitative analysis revealed enhanced collaborative learning, mathematical discourse, and problem-solving confidence among PBL participants. Student motivation scores were significantly higher in the experimental group (M = 4.31 vs. 3.18). Results provide robust empirical evidence supporting PBL's superiority over traditional methods for fraction instruction. The findings validate constructivist learning principles and demonstrate that authentic problem-solving contexts facilitate deeper conceptual understanding, multiple representational thinking, and sustained student engagement, addressing persistent challenges in elementary mathematics education.

Abstract

This study aimed to summarize studies on early childhood and elementary school social skills and identify research gaps. The study used a systematic literature review method. A total of 50 articles on early childhood and elementary school social skills were published over the past ten years, from 2013 to November 2022. The 50 articles were the subject of the study. Nine thousand one hundred fifty samples comprise 1,958 early childhood and 7,192 elementary school students. The data were collected by studying documentation of several previous articles through database searches such as Google Scholar, scopus.com, ERIC, Sage Publication, Science Direct, and Taylor and Francis. The data analysis techniques were quantitative (statistical) and qualitative (descriptive). This study indicated that 50 articles had highlighted social skills in early childhood and elementary school that had successfully improved through the implementation of learning outside the classroom revealing the attitudes such as cooperation, assertion, responsibility, and self-control in students, and intellectual abilities, language, Education, computers, gender, and parental support. This study is helpful for educators as material for maximizing social skills. A systematic literature review of students' social skills factors is recommended for future researchers.

The purpose of this research is to improve decision-making and explain the obstacles and solutions in implementing the Problem-Based Learning learning model. This research is a collaborative classroom action research between researchers and classroom teachers. The subjects of this study were teachers and third-grade students of Jemur State Elementary School in the 2023/2024 school year, totaling 26 students. The data used in this study are qualitative and quantitative data. The data collection techniques used were tests and non-tests. Data collection tools used evaluation sheets and interview sheets. The data validity test uses triangulation of sources and techniques. The analysis techniques used were data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that there was an increase in decision-making using the Problem-Based Learning model. In Cycle I, I obtained that there were 9 moderately skilled students and 17 skilled students, while in Cycle II, I obtained that there were 4 skilled students and 22 very skilled students. Obstacles and solutions in learning can be overcome well. So, it can be concluded that the Problem-Based Learning model can improve the decision-making of third-grade students.
