Abstract

There's a lot of media that can be used to learn English independently, you can either consciously seek for the material or you can unconsciously learn about it and one of the media is social media. This research aims to know and described students perception about using Tiktok for enhancing English language learning, Using quantitative research methodology, this study explores the influence of TikTok usage on English language learning perceptions among 30 ELL students in an Indonesian university. Utilizing a questionnaire, the research evaluates three aspects of social media's impact on English learning, have a significant correlation between Tiktok usefulness and it's effectiveness for English language learning, however as for the future interest of using Tiktok for English language learning the results show that it is insignificant means that Tiktok cannot be used for learning sources in the future.

Abstract

This study conducts a comprehensive content analysis of the textbook titled "Everyday English for Hospitality Professionals". Through the lens of textbook evaluation, the research aims to assess the effectiveness and suitability of the content in meeting the learning needs of professionals in the hospitality industry. Utilizing established criteria, the analysis scrutinizes the relevance, clarity, and practicality of the material, particularly in facilitating language skill development tailored to the demands of the hospitality profession. The findings of this study offer valuable insights for curriculum development and instructional material selection, contributing to the enhancement of English language learning experiences for hospitality professionals.

Abstract

This research evaluates an English for Business textbook written by Mary Ellen Guffey & Carolyn M. Seefer with a content analysis approach. This study focuses on exploring the structure, content, and learning features in textbooks to assess their suitability to learner needs and stated goals. The examination conducted to assess the textbooks in this research employed a qualitative descriptive approach using the Cunningsworth and Miekley checklist as its foundation. The assessment scale encompasses ratings ranging from 'very good' and 'good' to 'moderate' and 'poor'. The analysis revealed the textbook's effectiveness in facilitating learning through its structured layout, engaging examples, and interactive features. Additionally, contextualization in real business scenarios and sections that promote discussion increase its relevance and applicability. This study offers valuable insights for educators, curriculum developers, and policy makers in selecting and developing ESP textbooks tailored to the specific needs of learners in the business field.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of English textbooks for special purposes, particularly in the context of learning English for education. The content analysis method was used to evaluate the textbook with a focus on its purpose, content, methodology, and practical aspects. The results of the analysis showed strengths in purpose, approach, design and organization, as well as language aspects such as vocabulary and grammar. However, there were weaknesses in content coverage and integration of important components such as grammar and pronunciation. The implication is that this study emphasizes the importance of textbook evaluation to ensure the quality and effectiveness of learning, by adapting the materials to learners' needs and integrating methodologies that are in line with the latest educational developments.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the content of the English textbook "English for International Tourism" by Peter Strutt using the approach proposed by Brian Tomlinson. The research utilized a qualitative descriptive technique through checklist observations of several indicators of book content criteria. The analysis focused on the relevance, coherence, learner engagement, suitability, readability, and creativity of the materials presented in both textbooks. The findings revealed that "English for International Tourism" successfully presented updated, varied, engaging, and challenging content that not only fostered learner engagement in the tourism industry but also aided in developing learners' confidence and relevant language skills. Moreover, this book met various criteria for effective language learning materials, including facilitating learner comfort, building confidence, providing relevant and useful content, and offering opportunities for communicative language use. The book also considered various learning styles, affective attitudes, and provided feedback for delayed positive instructional effects.

Abstract

Previous literature reviews and bibliometric studies have paid much attention to the scientific outputs of Zoltán Dörnyei, a leading figure in the field of second language acquisition and education. However, little attention has been paid to his scholarly impact. This study aims to analyze all publications citing his 87 works in Scopus. Bibliometrix, a comprehensive bibliometric tool, was run to analyze 7,621 documents published in 1,970 sources by 9,226 authors of 2,652 institutions across 99 countries between 1991 and 2023. The analyses include the publication trend, research contributors, including authors, document elements including keywords, collaboration networks of research contributors, shared references, and frequently used keywords. Although most documents were written in English in the fields of social sciences as well as arts and humanities, his impact could be observed across other subject areas and languages. Further discussion elaborated on four major themes of the publications, including motivation, L2 motivational self-system, language learning, and positive psychology. This study could provide researchers and educators with valuable insights into understanding and improving language acquisition processes based on Dörnyei’s incalculable intellectual contribution. As this study focused on quantitative citation analysis, future research on how Dörnyei’s works were cited could provide deeper insights into his impact.

Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate the compatibility of materials in the textbook entitled "Cambridge English for Job-hunting" based on Tomlinson’s theory. The researcher used descriptive approach research as the type of the study. The data of the study were done by follows the process involved several stages, which are as follows: 1) The researcher selected an English textbook for analysis, 2) the researcher read the English textbook thoroughly, 3) the researcher carefully reviewed the content of the textbook, 4) the researcher gathered all the necessary materials from the textbook for analysis. The result of this study shows that the textbook substantially complies with Tomlinson's criteria for useful tools for language learning. It effectively engages students, builds confidence, offers appropriate information, uses actual speech, and accommodates a range of learning preferences and emotional conditions.

Abstract

Textbooks are an important learning tool in the education system. It becomes more important when English is learned as a foreign language like in Indonesia. As a language learned other than the mother tongue, most likely English is only learned by Indonesian students in the classroom. As a result, English textbooks have the potential to be students' only access to language in the classroom. The purpose of this study was to find out whether the book "When English Rings a Bell" for the eighth grade of junior high school is by the criteria (Education National Standard Council) BSNP. In this study, researchers used methods of content analysis, presentation analysis, language analysis, and graphic analysis based on BSNP (National Education Standards Board) which focuses on language characteristics as communication by paying attention to text content. This research instrument is a document. Researchers will focus 13 chapters on grade VIII junior high school. Then a check is carried out using the suitability check of textbooks based on BSNP (Education National Standard Council). The result of this study, the quality of the "When English Rings a Bell" textbook for the eighth grade of Junior High School based on the Education National Standard Council (BSNP) is good. There are 4 elements, these are content eligibility, presentation eligibility, language eligibility, and graphic eligibility. But, for the content eligibility element side, not all items of its indicators are fulfilled clearly. Just for KD and KI there are not found in this textbook.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat yang dilakukan oleh mahasiswa Tadris Bahasa Inggris bertujuan untuk meningkatkan literasi digital dan kesadaran di antara siswa kelas 7-1 SMP Negeri 3 Palangka Raya terkait penggunaan media sosial yang aman dan bertanggung jawab. Melalui serangkaian kegiatan yang melibatkan presentasi, diskusi tanya jawab, dan permainan interaktif, tim berhasil merancang sebuah program yang menarik dan edukatif. Berbagai topik yang disentuh dalam kegiatan ini termasuk jejak digital, privasi online, cyberbullying, dan pembuatan konten yang bertanggung jawab. Dengan adanya kegiatan ini, diharapkan siswa dapat lebih memahami risiko yang terkait dengan penggunaan media sosial dan menjadi lebih terampil dalam mengelola identitas online mereka. Selain itu, kegiatan ini juga bertujuan untuk mengajarkan siswa tentang pentingnya menghormati privasi orang lain dan menghindari perilaku cyberbullying yang merugikan. Partisipasi siswa dalam kegiatan ini diharapkan dapat menghasilkan dampak positif dalam budaya digital di sekolah. Dengan meningkatnya kesadaran dan literasi digital di kalangan siswa, diharapkan akan tercipta lingkungan yang lebih aman dan bertanggung jawab dalam penggunaan media sosial. Melalui pendekatan yang interaktif dan menyenangkan, kegiatan ini tidak hanya memberikan pemahaman yang lebih baik tentang keamanan digital, tetapi juga menginspirasi siswa untuk menjadi agen perubahan dalam penggunaan media sosial. Dengan demikian, artikel ini memberikan gambaran yang jelas tentang upaya yang dilakukan untuk memperkuat keamanan digital di sekolah dan bagaimana siswa dapat berperan aktif dalam meningkatkan kesadaran dan literasi digital di era digital ini.

Abstract

The development of English language proficiency for specific purposes (ESP) plays an important role in preparing learners for success in an increasingly globalized work environment, particularly in the field of business. In this context, the evaluation of ESP textbooks, such as "Intelligent Business”, the critical evaluation of English teaching materials, particularly focusing on the textbook "Intelligent Business" within the realm of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The assessment is based on Cunningsworth's (1984) criteria, emphasizing aspects such as content relevance, organization, language presentation, and activities. The textbook is scrutinized for its effectiveness in enhancing business English skills, with a particular emphasis on vocabulary, grammar, and skill development, and sheds light on the collaborative efforts and acknowledgments involved in creating the coursebook, underscoring its value as a learning resource. Through this evaluation, the study aims to provide insights into the suitability and efficacy of the textbook in facilitating language learning in a business context. The data collection technique used is a documentation study by analyzing the textbook based on those evaluation criteria. It is expected that the results of the analysis can provide in-depth insight into the strengths and weaknesses of this textbook and provide guidance for the development of more effective textbooks in the context of ESP learning in the field of business. By focusing on the evaluation of ESP textbooks in the business context, this study is expected to make a significant contribution to the development of English language teaching and learning practices for specific purposes in various business environments.
