Abstract

This study examined the effect of Project-Based Learning assisted by Interactive Flat Panel on elementary students’ mathematical concept understanding and learning independence. The study was grounded in the need for mathematics instruction that supports conceptual construction, learner autonomy, and meaningful technology integration rather than procedural practice alone. A quantitative quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group was employed. The participants were 24 elementary students divided into an experimental class and a control class, with 12 students in each group. The experimental class learned through Interactive Flat Panel-assisted Project-Based Learning, while the control class received comparison instruction without interactive technological support. Data were collected using a mathematical concept understanding test and a learning independence instrument. The analysis included descriptive statistics, Shapiro-Wilk normality testing, Levene’s homogeneity testing, independent samples t-test, Cohen’s d, and Pearson correlation. The results showed that the experimental class achieved higher mean scores than the control class in mathematical concept understanding (76.56 vs. 68.02) and learning independence (97.08 vs. 87.50). The t-test confirmed significant differences between groups for both variables, with a very large effect on concept understanding and a large effect on learning independence. Pearson correlation revealed a strong positive relationship between learning independence and mathematical concept understanding (r = .734, p = .007). These findings indicate that Interactive Flat Panel-assisted Project-Based Learning facilitates students’ conceptual reasoning while encouraging self-regulated learning behavior. The study contributes to technology-enhanced mathematics pedagogy by positioning interactive project-based instruction as an integrated approach for strengthening cognitive and self-regulatory learning outcomes in mathematics classrooms.

Abstract

This study examines the transparency of advocate fees (honorarium) within the client-attorney legal relationship in Indonesia. Although Article 21 of Law No. 18 of 2003 on Advocates entitles advocates to fees for their legal services, it sets no standard tariff, leaving the amount to negotiation and creating uncertainty for both parties. Using a normative legal method with statutory and conceptual approaches, supported by sociolegal insight from an expert practitioner, the study analyzes how fees are determined, the factors influencing their amount and form, and the impact of fee transformation on the client-attorney relationship. The findings show that written contracts and the Indonesian Advocates Code of Ethics are key instruments for ensuring fairness and transparency. Fees are set through agreement using schemes such as hourly, fixed, retainer, and success fees, influenced by case complexity, time, the advocate reputation, the client economic capacity, and legal risk. Transparent and proportional fee arrangements strengthen professionalism, protect client rights, and sustain trust, provided they remain consistent with professional ethics.

Abstract

Introduction: Cataract surgery is one of the most frequently performed ophthalmic procedures worldwide, and diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major risk factor for cataract development. Diabetic retinopathy (DR), a leading cause of preventable blindness, may be adversely affected by cataract surgery through inflammatory cascade activation and disruption of the blood-retinal barrier. However, the magnitude and clinical significance of this risk remain subjects of ongoing debate. This systematic review aims to synthesize evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and primary studies examining the association between cataract surgery and DR progression in diabetic patients. Methods: A systematic review adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and  (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. Studies including adult diabetic patients undergoing cataract surgery with outcomes related to DR progression, diabetic macular edema (DME), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and central macular thickness (CMT) were included. Quality assessment used the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool (RoB 2) for RCTs and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) for observational studies. A total of 17 studies (7 RCTs and 10 primary/observational studies) comprising 25,634 eyes were included. Results: DR progression was significantly higher after cataract surgery compared to non-operated fellow eyes or control cohorts (Risk Ratio [RR] 1.46; 95% CI: 1.28–1.66; P < 0.001). Anti-VEGF prophylaxis at the time of cataract surgery significantly reduced DR progression (RR 0.37; 95% CI: 0.19–0.70; P = 0.002) and improved BCVA. Intravitreal dexamethasone implants reduced CMT and decreased the need for rescue interventions. Risk factors associated with postoperative DR progression included elevated HbA1c, duration of DM, and severity of preoperative DR. The incidence of postoperative DME ranged from 6.06% to 46.2% depending on baseline DR severity. Discussion: Surgery-induced inflammation, VEGF upregulation, and breakdown of the blood-ocular barrier are the primary mechanisms underlying DR progression post-cataract surgery. Modern phacoemulsification carries a lower risk compared to earlier techniques; however, the risk remains clinically significant in patients with more advanced baseline DR. Prophylactic anti-VEGF or corticosteroid intravitreal injections at the time of surgery offer meaningful protection against DR worsening and postoperative DME. HbA1c optimization and preoperative DR control are critical to mitigating surgical risk. Conclusion: Cataract surgery in diabetic patients is associated with a statistically significant increased risk of DR progression, particularly in those with moderate-to-severe NPDR or poorly controlled glycemia. Prophylactic intravitreal anti-VEGF or corticosteroid therapy at the time of surgery is effective in reducing postoperative DR progression and DME. Preoperative optimization of systemic control and early postoperative monitoring are strongly recommended.

Abstract

Introduction: Vitreous floaters (myodesopsia) can significantly impair patient-reported quality of life (QoL) and visual function. The role of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) remains debated due to variability in study designs and outcome measures. This systematic review evaluates the association between PPV and patient-reported QoL and visual disturbance outcomes. Methods: A comprehensive search of adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines identified RCTs and primary observational studies reporting patient-reported outcomes after PPV, Nd:YAG vitreolysis, or observation for symptomatic floaters (minimum 3-month follow-up). Two independent reviewers assessed bias using Cochrane RoB 2.0 and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Narrative synthesis was performed. Results: Sixteen studies (2 RCTs, 14 observational; >4,019 eyes) were included. Patient satisfaction after PPV ranged from 84–94%. Best-corrected visual acuity improved by −0.08 logMAR (p<0.0001). NEI VFQ-39 scores increased by 19% (p<0.00001). Contrast sensitivity normalized post-PPV. YAG vitreolysis showed subjective improvement (54% vs. 9% sham) but no contrast sensitivity benefit. Retinal detachment rates were 1.5–10.9%; cataract progression reached 23.5% in phakic patients. Discussion: PPV significantly improves QoL, BCVA, and contrast sensitivity with acceptable safety using small-gauge techniques. YAG is a less invasive alternative for Weiss ring floaters but lacks functional CSF benefit. No large RCTs exist for PPV. Conclusion: PPV for symptomatic floaters is associated with meaningful improvements in QoL and visual function. Standardized, floater-specific PROMs and multicenter RCTs are urgently needed

Abstract

The transformation of Islamic boarding school (pesantren) education has become a necessity in responding to the rapid development of science, technology, and the demands of 21st-century competencies. However, this transformation must remain grounded in Islamic values, which constitute the fundamental identity of pesantren. This study aims to analyze the transformation of pesantren education in the modern era through the integration of Islamic values, the utilization of technology, and the strengthening of 21st-century competencies. The study employs a qualitative approach using a library research method. Data were collected from various sources, including books, journal articles, research reports, and other relevant scientific documents. Data analysis was conducted through content analysis involving data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the transformation of pesantren education is manifested through three major aspects: (1) the integration of Islamic values as the educational foundation for developing students' character and morality; (2) the utilization of technology to enhance learning quality, information accessibility, and institutional management; and (3) the strengthening of 21st-century competencies, including critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, and digital literacy. These three aspects are integrated into an educational model that enables pesantren to adapt to contemporary developments while preserving its Islamic identity. Therefore, pesantren play a strategic role in producing Muslim generations who are morally grounded, competent, and capable of competing in the global era.

Abstract

Indonesia's education still faces serious challenges in developing 21st-century skills, as reflected in the 2022 PISA results, where Indonesia ranked 69th out of 80 countries with reading, mathematics, and science scores below the OECD average. At SD Negeri 2 Darmayasa, Pejawaran, Banjarnegara, 60% of fifth-grade students struggled to understand the water cycle due to its abstract nature and the limited use of contextual, visualized learning media. This study aimed to examine the effect of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) approach on elementary students' critical thinking and science literacy. A quantitative approach with a Quasi-Experimental Nonequivalent Control Group Design was employed, involving 31 fifth-grade students from two schools in Gugus Sudirman selected through cluster random sampling: 19 students as the experimental group, taught using STEM through Project-Based Learning on the water cycle, and 12 students as the control group, taught conventionally. Data were collected through essay tests and analyzed using independent sample t-tests and Pearson correlation with SPSS 25. Results showed that the STEM approach had a significant effect on both critical thinking (p = 0.000, mean difference = 14.82) and science literacy (p = 0.000, mean difference = 20.67). However, the correlation between critical thinking and science literacy in the experimental group was positive but weak and not statistically significant (r = 0.413, p = 0.079). These findings suggest that STEM effectively enhances critical thinking and science literacy separately, although their development does not necessarily occur in parallel within individual students.

Abstract

Indonesian students' critical thinking skills remain low, reflected in the 2022 PISA results, where Indonesia ranked 69th of 80 countries, with only 0.9% of students reaching level 4–6 higher-order thinking questions in science. A diagnostic test given to 16 fourth-graders at SD Negeri 2 Kesenet, Banjarmangu, Banjarnegara, showed an average score of only 59, far below the mastery criterion, with students struggling to explain reasoning and analyze cause-and-effect relationships on the abstract topic of "Energy and Its Changes." This study examined the effect of Computational Thinking (CT) learning through Scratch on elementary students' critical thinking and communication skills. A quantitative Quasi-Experimental Posttest-Only Control Group Design involved 31 fourth-graders from two schools in one cluster selected through total sampling: 16 students in the experimental group, taught using CT through Scratch simulations, and 15 in the control group, taught using conventional picture-based media. Data were collected through essay tests and Likert-scale observation sheets, then analyzed using independent sample t-tests and Pearson correlation with SPSS. Results showed the CT-based Scratch approach significantly affected both critical thinking (p = 0.001, mean difference = 15.92) and science communication skills (p = 0.014, mean difference = 9.80). The correlation between the two variables was positive, strong, and statistically significant (r = 0.685, p = 0.001). These findings suggest CT-based Scratch learning effectively enhances critical thinking and communication skills, both separately and in parallel within individual students.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills and science process skills among elementary school studentsremain relatively low, as observed in Grade III of SD Negeri Tritih Kulon 09,Panjaitan Cluster, North Cilacap District, where students had never conductedsimple experiments, formulated hypotheses, or carried out scientific inquiry on themetamorphosis topic due to teacher-centered instruction. This study analyzes theeffect of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on critical thinking skills andscience process skills, while examining the relationship between the two variables. The study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design(Nonequivalent Control Group Design), involving 51 Grade III students divided intoan experimental group (28 students from SD Negeri Tritih Kulon 09) and a controlgroup (23 students from SD Negeri Tritih Kulon 06). Data were collected throughtests, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U Testsince the data did not meet the assumptions of normality and homogeneity. Resultsshow that PBL had a significant effect on both critical thinking skills (Mean Rankexperimental 36.89 vs. control 12.74; Sig. = 0.000) and science process skills (MeanRank experimental 34.52 vs. control 15.63; Sig. = 0.000), with mean gains of 26.61and 16.07 points in the experimental group, while the control group declined on bothvariables. This study provides empirical evidence that PBL can develop criticalthinking skills and science process skills in an integrated, simultaneous mannerwithin a single learning topic, a focus rarely addressed in previous PBL studies, which have generally examined the two variables separately.
