Abstract

This study evaluated the implementation of integrated character education in elementary schools in the city of Palembang and measure the achievement of the results. The implementation of integrated character education in several cities in Indonesia has not shown encouraging results. This study is a survey method, conducted at 20 elementary schools in Palembang with descriptive statistics, frequency distribution, and histogram. Data collection techniques were obtained through in-depth interviews, observation, documentation, checklists, and questionnaires. The results showed that the implementation of integrated character education in elementary schools has not been encouraging. Empirical evaluative findings show that in the fifth grade the highest percentage is 36.33% and in the sixth grade, 30.33% of the 600 elementary school students in the city of Palembang studied still in the Good enough category. The presence and role of classroom teachers who are specifically entrusted with the role of the transmitter of character education or heart education are sometimes overwhelmed and the role of guidance and counseling teachers at the elementary school level is not very visible or even not involved at all, as seen in most elementary schools in Indonesia. This paper recommend to provide hours of classical tutoring services.

This is an observational study with a cross-sectional design. The research participants were women who had children who were at risk of TB, with 17 samples meeting the inclusion criteria but not the exclusion criteria. Inclusion criteria: Mothers with children are at risk of developing clinical tuberculosis as a result of household contact with smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis patients. The child is under the age of five. Data collection techniques used include questionnaire testing, analysis of questionnaire, and measuring instruments as research instruments, collecting data with questionnaires, checking each respondent's answers in accordance with data collection procedures, and analyzing the data using computerized statistical methods. Abstract

Based on statistical data from the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2018, the dropout rate in South Sumatra Province was very high. Especially for the Palembang City area, there were about 17% of the cases of children dropping out of school in South Sumatra until 2018. The large number of children who have dropped out of school and who were not in school cause exploited children to be still often found on the streets, joining their parents to earn a living and even vulnerable to being involved in various juvenile delinquency and other criminal acts. Based on this fact, the Palembang City Government (Pemkot) in 2019, through the Palembang City Education Office, then developed a program to eradicate school dropouts and street children called the "The Service Program Of You May Not Stop From School" (Poltabes). This program is followed up with education at a distance school (Filial) for street children and school dropouts in Palembang Learning Activity Center. The method used was qualitative research. The research was conducted at a filial school for street children and dropouts in Palembang city. Data collection in the study was carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. The subjects of this study consisted of one tutor each, a companion teacher, a party from the Education Office, and students. The study found that the fulfillment of the right to education for street children and dropouts through the Filial school program at Palembang Learning Activity Center has been going well. Until the end of the 2020/2021 academic year, the implementation of this filial school program has had an impact, including: 1) 7 elementary school students, 42 junior high school students, and 44 high school students, with a total of 93 students have completed formal education; 2) street children or dropouts who attend filial school education show a change in behavior and actions in a positive direction, both in attitude and appearance; 3) a decrease in the dropout rate in the city of Palembang, which was initially 1,278 cases reduced to 491 cases; 4) support the increase in the average length of schooling which was initially 10.37% to 10.52%; 5) support the increase in the human development index from 77.89% to 78.44%; 6) This Poltabes innovation is in line with and contributes to the achievement of The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the education sector.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the 7E learning cycle model on cognitive learning outcomes of reasoning on the material of natural change in fifth grade elementary school. The method used in this study was a quasi-experimental design using an unequal control group design. The sample was 41 students from two classes (class A and class B) and it was chosen by using purposive. Class V A had 21 students who used the 7E learning cycle model, and class V B had 20 students who used the traditional learning. The results of this study were quantitative and qualitative data. The data obtained from students' mathematical connection abilities before the implementation of learning and it obtained from student questionnaires and analysis of observation sheets. The results of this study were: (1) the Learning Cycle Model could improve learning outcomes of science reasoning changes in the shape of objects (2) increased the activity of students who got Learning Cycle 7E better than students who got conventional learning, (3) and most students gave positive attitude towards the 7E learning cycle. Abstract

For students of English education, speaking skills are of paramount importance. However, in the context of English students at Universitas Bengkulu, many students seemed to still struggle with speaking skills. Therefore, to cope with this problem, this classroom action research was conducted with the aim of improving the speaking skills of students who took English conversation course by applying action learning strategy (ALS) since this strategy was scientifically promising. Two phases of the class action design were employed in this research project. The data were garnered using observations, interviews, and English-speaking test. It was evident from the first phase of observation that almost all students recommended the ALS. The data from the interview revealed that a significant proportion of students had profited from this approach, and there were few students who spoke in front of the class. The first phase's precise decision how an average score of 74 was attained by the students. At the second phase, the observation and interview data showed that nearly all students actively participated during discussions and had good improvements of English-speaking skills. The result revealed that the implementation of ALS in the conversation course in semester 1 improves S1 students’ speaking skills.

Abstract

Language and culture cannot be separated. Cultural integration in ELT now becomes the focus of many researchers and trends in recent years. Unfortunately, so far, there has been no in-depth investigation that focused on Indonesian teachers' perceptions of local and foreign cultural presentations in high school English textbooks. To fill the gap, this study aims to investigate the teachers' perception of the benefits and weaknesses of local and foreign cultural representation (LCFR) in the ELT textbook they used. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The nine senior high school teachers representing the city, district, and province in South Sumatra, Indonesia, were purposely involved as the participant in this study. A semi-structured interview supporting documentation was conducted and analysed following the interactive model of data analysis proposed by Miles and Huberman. Based on the findings, there are three main benefits of LCFR in ELT textbooks; first, LFCR helps teachers stimulate or catch students’ attention at the beginning of the teaching process. Second, it improves students’ intercultural knowledge, be aware of a different cultures from other countries, and avoids culture shock. Next, it also increases students’ curiosity and critical thinking, making the learning process more active and meaningful. Moreover, the weaknesses are dealing with the imbalanced portion of cultural representation and inadequate information on cross-cultural understanding which cause misunderstanding and confusion for the students.
