Abstract

One of important quality parameters of white crystal cane sugar is its color, which is measured as the ICUMSA value referring to the standard method established by the International Commission for Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis (ICUMSA). It is usually measured in a laboratory using a complex and lengthy chemical analysis method. To overcome this challenge, this research attempts to explore the potential use of multi-channel spectral sensors in the UV-Vis-NIR region as an alternative method to predict the ICUMSA value. The proposed portable device uses an AS7265X sensor as the main component. The spectra data of 60 cane sugar samples were collected using the proposed device followed by measurements of ICUMSA value in the laboratory using standard methods as reference. The prediction using partial least squares regression (PLSR) model achieved R2 = 0.896, RMSEC = 0.072%, RMSEP = 0.103%, CV = 26.087%, and RPD = 3.104. The multiple linear regression (MLR) model achieved R2 = 0.910, RMSEC = 0.067%, RMSEP = 0.111%, CV = 24.328%, and RPD = 3.328. The artificial neural network (ANN) model achieved R2 = 0.999, RMSEC = 0.004%, RMSEP = 0.037%, CV = 1.433% and RPD = 9.543. This result indicates that the developed PLSR, MLR, and ANN models can predict the ICUMSA value well with ANN as the best model. It also can be concluded that the proposed portable device can be an alternative for rapid analysis of ICUMSA value.

Abstract

The quality of sugarcane in the plantation is the most important information for farmers and sugar factories for assessing the maturity of sugarcane and determining the optimal harvest schedule. The brix value is used as a quality index in the sugar industry and is an important parameter for the evaluation of cane quality and maturity. Traditional methods of determining brix involve time-consuming and labor-intensive processes, often involving destructive sampling. To overcome these challenges, this study proposes a non-destructive approach using portable near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to predict the sugar content in sugarcane stalks. The main objective of this study was to develop a nondestructive prediction model for the brix value in sugarcane using portable NIR spectroscopy. Data processing involved two models: Partial Least Squares (PLS) and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN), along with various data pre-treatment techniques. The PLS model showed an improvement in prediction accuracy with data pre-treatment, especially with the Savitzky-Golay method (R2 = 0.755, RMSEP = 1.22%, RMSEP = 1.43%, CV = 6.13%, and RPD = 2.02). In addition, the ANN model combined with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed high predictive performance when sugarcane was 11 months old (R2 = 0.797, RMSEC = 0.56%, RMSEP = 0.87%, CV = 3.04%, and RPD = 2.96).

Abstract

Maintaining an optimal microclimate is essential for efficient operation of tropical greenhouses, particularly under fluctuating weather conditions. This study proposes an adaptive energy-efficient model for regulating air temperature in tropical greenhouses using historical climate data. The model optimizes the fan rotation speeds via an inverter to meet the temperature targets while minimizing energy consumption. Key methodologies include climate data analysis, development of a predictive model for indoor air temperature using Artificial Neural Networks, and optimization of fan speed control. The model achieved high predictive accuracy, with an RMSE of 0,02 and an R² of 0,96. The practical implementation demonstrated effective temperature control, with fan speeds ranging between 30 and 40 Hz during cloudy periods and 50 Hz in sunny conditions. Notably, the system reduced electricity consumption by 33,93% during cloudy weather and 18,54% in sunny weather, showing its potential for significant energy savings. This data-driven adaptive model approach is highly suited for tropical greenhouses experiencing dynamic climatic variations and offers a sustainable and efficient solution for greenhouse microclimate management.

Abstract

Measuring phenotypic parameters is important in evaluating the productivity of sugarcane. Existing manual measurements are considered less efficient, so a better alternative method is needed. This research aims to explore the potential of using multispectral drone imagery and machine learning to estimate phenotypic parameters of sugarcane plants that are efficient, accurate, inexpensive, and support sustainable agricultural practices. Spectrum data captured by drones, namely Green, Red, RedEdge and NIR are used as inputs to estimate phenotypic parameters including brix value, number of stands, stem diameter, and plant height. Based on the results of machine learning model development, the ANN algorithm model is most effective in predicting Brix Value with R2 0.74 and RMSE 0.06 and number of stands with R2 0.68 and RMSE 2.13. All models could not predict stem diameter and plant height well. The best model to predict plant height was obtained by RF algorithm with R2 0.53 and RMSE 14.09. SVR algorithm was the best model to predict plant diameter with R2 0.39. and RMSE 0.49. This indicates that the effectiveness of an algorithm depends on the specific parameter being predicted and there is no dominant algorithm for all phenotypic parameters. Keywords: Machine learning, Multispectral drone imagery, Phenotypic parameter, Plant productivity, Sugarcane.

Abstract

Sigupai rice, Indonesia local aromatic rice varieties grown in South-West region of Aceh, is highly valued for its fragrance and quality, making it susceptible to adulteration. This study compares the performance of two portable Near-infrared (NIR) devices, SCiO and NeoSpectra, for rapid authentication of Sigupai rice. We evaluated 86 samples for qualitative analysis (i.e. authentic vs adulterated rice) and 44 samples for quantitative analysis (i.e. the level of adulteration). For the qualitative analysis using partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), the best estimation model could differentiate authentic and adulterated samples with an accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and false positive rates of 89.29%, 92.86%, 85.71% and 14.29% for the NeoSpectra and 97.44%, 100%, 94.87%, and 5.13% for the SCiO, respectively at the validation stage. For quantitative analysis using partial least squares-regression (PLS-R), the best estimation model could estimate the level of adulteration with a coefficient of determination (R²), RMSEP, RPD, and consistency values of 0.92, 1.50%, 5.93 and 100.69% for the NeoSpectra and 0.96, 1.31%, 6.83 and 104.78% for the SCiO. Both portable NIR devices could be used as a rapid analysis tool for the authenticity of Sigupai rice with high accuracy. However, in this study the SCiO device showed a better performance. Keywords: Portable NIR device, Authentication, Aromatic rice, Rapid analysis, Sigupai variety.

Abstract

Organic solar cells (OSC) as an emerging photovoltaics devices have potential clean energy source due to their advantages properties, including low-cost production, light weight, and promising for flexible devices. In this study, we investigated the effect of calcium as buffer layer on top photoactive layer of the polymer based solar cell device. Poly-3-hexylthiophene (P3HT) as donor material combining with phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) were blended to form bulk heterojunction. Calcium was deposited on top of polymer (P3HT) and fullerene derivative (PC61BM) photoactive layer using thermal evaporation inside ultrahigh vacuum chamber. Calcium was selected as buffer layer because of its low-work -function in order to improve performance of polymer solar cells. Our study presented that calcium buffer layer enhanced the performance of solar cells mainly in open circuit voltage, VOC, (0.45 V to 0.61 V) and fill factor, FF, (44% to 65%), increasing power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 1.79% to 3.79%. This result suggested that the improvement of polymer solar cells performance because of the recombination suppression and more efficient charge transfer in cathode. The energy level alignment and work function properties of calcium form an ideal ohmic contact between the active layer and the cathode, thus ensuring effective electron injection from the active layer to the cathode. We also demonstrated the fabrication of polymer solar cells device under ambient atmosphere. However, the devices fabricated under ambient atmosphere have lower performances than fabricated inside nitrogen filled glovebox, because polymer photoactive material and calcium are easily degraded by moisture.
