Abstract

This study examines how Mahayana Buddhist practice is institutionally sustained and governed at the community level within a rural Indonesian context, framing religion as a social system shaped by collective decision processes and informal governance structures. The purpose of the study is to move beyond descriptive accounts of religious existence by analyzing how institutional dynamics, normative authority, and communal coordination interact to maintain religious continuity under local social constraints. Employing a qualitative case-based approach, the study draws on in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis to capture everyday practices, leadership roles, and decision-making mechanisms embedded within the Mahayana Buddhist community. The findings reveal that religious sustainability is not driven by doctrinal enforcement, but by adaptive governance arrangements that balance ethical norms, communal legitimacy, and situational flexibility. Authority is exercised through negotiated roles rather than formal hierarchy, while collective decisions emerge through consensus-oriented processes that integrate religious values with local socio-cultural realities. These dynamics function as an informal yet stable governance system that enables the community to manage internal coordination and external pressures without institutional rigidity. The significance of this study lies in its contribution to systems-oriented perspectives in decision sciences and institutional analysis by demonstrating how religious practice operates as a socially embedded system of governance. By conceptualizing religion as a dynamic decision environment shaped by institutional interaction rather than static belief, the study offers an alternative analytical lens for understanding governance processes in non-state, value-driven systems, thereby extending the relevance of operations and systems research to socio-religious contexts that remain underexplored in international scholarship

Abstract

Western orientalist writings on Islam often present selective historical narratives that influence public understanding of Islamic teachings. One of these works is William J. Federer’s What Every American Needs to Know about the Qur’an – A History of Islam and the United States, which portrays Islam, the Qur’an, and the Prophet Muhammad in ways that raise theological and textual concerns. This study aims to analyze how key signifiers, Islam, the Qur’an, and the Prophet Muhammad are associated with signified meanings that deviate from established Islamic interpretations. Using Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic framework and a qualitative descriptive method, this research identifies three major patterns of signified deviation: (1) Islam is linked to coercion and revenge despite Qur’anic principles of religious freedom and forgiveness; (2) the Qur’an is portrayed as legitimizing violence and sexual misconduct through selective readings of specific verses; and (3) the Prophet Muhammad is represented as acting based on personal desire rather than divine command. The study concludes that these deviations result from reassigning signified meanings to key Islamic signifiers, producing an ideologically framed interpretation. This research contributes to understanding how semiotic processes shape contemporary representations of Islam in orientalist discourse.

Abstract

Islamic education in Western countries serves as a strategic space for shaping the dual identities of Muslim students as faithful individuals and as citizens in democratic and multicultural societies. This study explores how Islamic institutions and educators in the West integrate civic values, multiculturalism, and Islamic teachings into educational practices. Using a systematic literature review (SLR) method with an exploratory qualitative approach, the study analyzes 10 scholarly articles, sourced from Scopus, Sinta, and Google Scholar. The findings reveal four key themes: (1) Islamic education functions as a space for negotiating dual identities among Muslim students; (2) there is active integration of civic values such as tolerance, social responsibility, and justice into Islamic curricula; (3) Muslim educators play a strategic role as cultural mediators and transformative agents in building inclusive identities; and (4) structural challenges persist, including institutional discrimination, restrictive secular policies, and limited policy support. This study affirms that Islamic education in the West is not merely a vehicle for religious preservation, but also a strategic platform for cultivating participatory, democratic, and pluralistic citizenship.

Abstract

The phenomenon of applying return fees courier services in Bondowoso District has become a significant issue due to procedural uncertainty and potential injustice for consumers, particularly from the perspective of Sharia Economic Law. This research addresses two problems: (1) how is the practice of applying return fees courier services in Bondowoso District, and (2) how does Sharia Economic Law analyze this practice. The study aims to describe the practice of return fees and to analyze its compliance with the principles of ijarah and ju’alah contracts. A descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach was employed, using in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation as data collection techniques. The research subjects consisted of couriers, the hub manager, and customers who had experienced returns. The findings reveal that return fees are generally charged when goods are rejected upon delivery, opened or damaged, or when the return process is carried out outside the application procedure. This practice does not entirely originate from the company’s official policy but rather from couriers’ personal initiatives. From the perspective of Sharia Economic Law, return fees can be justified as ijarah if there is a clear mutual agreement, but they have the potential to harm consumers if applied unilaterally.

Abstract

The development of modern trade has introduced various marketing innovations, one of which is the use of paid member cards that offer discounts, shopping points, and exclusive benefits. However, when the use of member cards requires a registration fee, questions arise regarding the clarity of benefits, compliance with the principles of Islamic economic law, and consumer rights protection. This study aims to analyze consumer rights in the use of paid member cards and to evaluate the practice from the perspective of Islamic economic law. The research employed a qualitative descriptive-analytical method with a juridical-empirical approach, through interviews and literature review. The results indicate that the practice of paid member cards has the potential to create uncertainty of benefits and an imbalance between costs and gains, especially when information is not transparent. From the perspective of Islamic economic law, this practice is permissible provided that benefits are clearly defined, free from gharar (uncertainty) and maysir (speculation), and the fees charged are limited to administrative costs. In practice, at Kotty Kosmetik Banda Aceh, some consumers reported a lack of certainty regarding products eligible for discounts, limited information on items that can be redeemed with points, and relatively high registration fees. Therefore, the implementation of information transparency and cost limitation principles is essential to ensure justice, protect consumer rights, and maintain compliance with Islamic economic law.

Abstract

The "All You Can Eat" (AYCE) business practice has become a popular business model among the public, especially in the culinary sector. However, this phenomenon raises a number of questions related to halalness and sustainability from an Islamic legal perspective. This research aims to analyze AYCE buying and selling practices through a review Maslahah al-Mursalah (benefits that are not directly explained in the text) as an approach in Islamic law. The method used is qualitative analysis with a normative approach that examines fiqh principles and maslahah theory to assess whether AYCE practices bring benefits to individuals and society. This research found that although AYCE can provide economic benefits for entrepreneurs and satisfaction for consumers, there are potential losses in the aspects of waste (israf), nutritional imbalances, and impacts on health that must be avoided. In perspective Maslahah al-Mursalah AYCE practices can be justified if the principles of welfare and sustainability are maintained, but there needs to be strict regulation to ensure that no party is harmed and that excessive consumption can be avoided. This research concludes that the application of principles Maslahah al-Mursalah In business, AYCE can potentially provide benefits as long as it is in accordance with the values of justice and balance in Islam.

Abstract

Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) pack a powerful nutritional punch. However, they spoil easily and require special handling for dehydration. Temperature during rehydration is a key factor affecting the quality recovery of mushrooms. Yet, there are limited studies on rehydration kinetics at different temperatures. The principal objective of this study was to investigate how soaking temperatures (25±1°C, 40±1°C, 50±1°C, 60±1°C, and 70±1°C) affect rehydration ratio, moisture content, water absorption rate, and volume expansion ratio at 120 minutes, with three repetitions. The results showed that physical recovery was dominant at lower temperatures (25–40°C). Maximum moisture content (0.850 g.g-1) was achieved at 40°C. In contrast, the optimal rehydration ratio (6.549) occurred at 25 °C. High temperatures (60–70°C) increased the kinetic rate of water absorption, reaching a peak at 60±(0.081g.g-1 min). Volume expansion reached its maximum at 70 °C (1.482). Based on mathematical modeling results, the Midilli-Kucuk model had the highest predictive accuracy at 25°C and 60°C. The Two-Term model captured rehydration phenomena better at 50°C and 70°C. The Bidkhori-Karizaki model provided the most precise data fit when applied at 48°C. Using high temperatures, such as 70°C, can significantly accelerate rehydration kinetics. However, there are technical consequences, including high total energy consumption and risk of structural damage to the product. These effects can reduce its final quality, which is critical for industrial-scale implementation. Therefore, to balance efficiency and product quality, a soaking temperature range of 25–40 °C is recommended as the most optimal operational condition.
