Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to examine the implementation of religious moderation based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Denpasar, Bali, particularly in supporting SDG 4 and SDG 16. Theoretical framework: The research is grounded in the theoretical framework of religious moderation, multicultural education, and character education, which emphasizes balance, tolerance, inclusivity, and respect for diversity within educational institutions. Literature review:  A review of relevant literature indicates that schools play a strategic role in fostering moderate religious attitudes, especially in multicultural societies where globalization and digital media increasingly influence students’ perspectives and behaviours. However, empirical studies linking religious moderation explicitly to the SDGs in Indonesian school contexts remain limited. Method: Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study collects data through in-depth interviews with teachers and students, classroom interaction observations, and analysis of school policy documents. The data are analyzed thematically to identify patterns and core themes related to practices of religious moderation, perceptions of tolerance, and multicultural engagement within the school environment. Results: The findings reveal that SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Denpasar integrates religious moderation through inclusive learning practices, intercultural interactions, school regulations promoting mutual respect, and the internalization of Islamic values aligned with peaceful coexistence. Teachers and students generally demonstrate positive attitudes toward diversity, although challenges persist due to external social and media influences that may trigger intolerance. Implications: The study highlights that the implementation of religious moderation contributes to strengthening students’ character, enhancing social harmony, and supporting the achievement of SDG-oriented education. Novelty: The novelty of this study lies in its explicit linkage between religious moderation practices and the SDGs within a Muhammadiyah school located in a Hindu-majority region, offering a contextual model for promoting peace-oriented and inclusive education in multicultural settings.

Abstract

Climate change and environmental degradation are global challenges that demand the involvement of the education sector in sustainable development. In Indonesia, pesantren as traditional Islamic educational institutions have a strategic position because they not only transmit religious knowledge, but also shape the social values and practices of the community. Some Islamic boarding schools have developed waste management, renewable energy, and organic farming programs, but these initiatives are still sporadic and rarely systematically studied. This research aims to examine the contribution of pesantren to environmental education and sustainable development, identify practices, challenges, and opportunities that arise, as well as map the latest research trends. The study was conducted with a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using the PRISMA 2020 framework. Literature searches on Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar (2020–2025) using Boolean strings: TITLE-ABS-KEY ("pesantren" OR "Islamic boarding school") AND TITLE-ABS-KEY ("sustainability" OR "sustainable development" OR "environmental education" OR "environmental issues"). Of the 77 articles identified, 30 met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed descriptively and thematically. The findings show that pesantren integrate Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) with a spiritual dimension—khalīfah, amanah, ihsan—that places ecological practices as worship. The main themes include curriculum-based and extracurricular environmental education, green pesantren management, and contribution to the SDGs through renewable energy and waste management. Challenges include limited funding, cultural resistance, and weak policy support. Pesantren play a strategic role in sustainable development by connecting religious norms and ecological practices. Follow-up research with a mixed-methods approach, standardized indicators, and longitudinal studies is urgently needed, while policies in the form of eco-pesantren standards, performance-based incentives, and integration into the SDGs monitoring system will strengthen the contribution of pesantren at the national and global levels.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has significantly changed the educational landscape and presented new opportunities to strengthen students' learning independence. This article examines the integration of digital technology including Learning Management System (LMS), Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC), artificial intelligence (AI), and collaborative platforms as a strategy to strengthen independent learning and self-regulation. The study uses a descriptive quantitative approach based on a literature review from Scopus indexed journal articles in the period 2022–2025. The search process is carried out through Boolean queries that are relevant to the themes of technology, independence, digital education, and integration, then selected using PRISMA guidelines. Of the 146 articles identified at the initial stage, the application of inclusion criteria (empirical articles, published in journals, relevant to the topic) resulted in 8 articles that were further analyzed. The results of the synthesis show that the integration of digital technology is positively correlated with improved academic performance, motivation, and learning engagement. AI-based technologies, such as chatbots and intelligent tutoring systems, contribute through real-time feedback, adaptive learning paths, and learning personalization that strengthen students' self-regulation skills (planning, monitoring, and reflection). However, the implementation of technology still faces challenges in the form of inequality of access, infrastructure readiness, and educators' digital competence in designing learning that is in line with pedagogical goals. In addition, there is a risk of over-reliance on technology, especially AI, which has the potential to lower deep cognitive engagement and inhibit critical thinking if not accompanied by proper instructional guidance. Therefore, the integration of digital technology needs to be placed as a scaffolding that supports learning autonomy, while at the same time being balanced by strengthening digital literacy, mature instructional design, and developing educator competencies so that the benefits of digital transformation can be optimal and sustainable.

Abstract

The current massive digital disruption phenomenon has triggered a worrying moral crisis in the virtual public sphere. This condition is characterized by the high intensity of the spread of misinformation (hoaxes), cyber provocation, hate speech, and the erosion of civilized communication ethics. Muhammadiyah, as a da'wah organization oriented towards renewal and educational enlightenment, responds to these challenges responsively by strengthening media literacy based on Islamic moral principles. This study aims to explore in depth the construction of the concept of digital morality in Islamic education and the systematic mechanisms for implementing media literacy in Muhammadiyah educational environments through a review of organizational policy documents. This study applies a qualitative approach with a library research method (library reserch). The researcher acts as a key instrument in collecting data through documentation studies. The research data sources are classified into primary data, which include fiqh documents, information on the tarjih and tajdid councils of PP Muhammadiyah, and the Al-Islam and Muhammadiyah curriculum (AIK), and secondary data from relevant scientific literature. Data analysis is carried out systematically using content analysis techniques (content analysis) which includes the stages of reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions to synthesize the construction of digital morality in Muhammadiyah Education policies and practices. Research findings indicate that the digital moral framework from Muhammadiyah's perspective is fundamentally oriented toward the values of tabayyun (verification), the polite manifestation of amar ma'ruf nahi munkar (enjoining good and forbidding evil), and theological awareness of the afterlife's accountability in every digital interaction. The implementation of this literacy has been proven to go beyond mere mastery of technical skills (technical skills), emphasizing the internalization of Information Fiqh ethics as a behavioral guideline for the entire academic community. The synergy between official organizational policies, an adaptive AIK curriculum, and a robust educational infrastructure is Muhammadiyah's fundamental strategy in mitigating the impact of moral disruption in the digital era. The success of this model sets an important precedent for Islamic education in producing a generation that is not only technologically savvy but also possesses spiritual depth and moral integrity in the virtual world.

Abstract

Quality education requires innovative teachers in managing the learning process. In the context of Islamic education, the Al-Qur'an memorization program is an important innovation that focuses not only on memorization but also on character building and improving the quality of learning. This study aims to describe teacher innovations in optimizing the quality of learning through the tahfidz program at SMA Muhammadiyah Pontren Imam Syuhodo, and to identify obstacles encountered in its implementation. This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data were obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation involving tahfidz teachers and school officials. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results show that teachers innovated in four aspects of learning, namely method innovation through the combination of sima'an, independent memorization, and talaqqi; media innovation by utilizing Al-Qur'an manuscripts and audio murottal; strategy innovation through setting flexible memorization targets, providing awards, and tahfidz camp activities; and evaluation innovation through weekly evaluations using mutaba'ah books. The main obstacle faced is the limited time allocated for memorization within the school curriculum. Despite this, teachers continue to strive to develop adaptive strategies to maintain the quality of memorization learning.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has brought major changes in the lives of Generation Z, including in the way they think, behave, and behave. On the other hand, this change also raises various moral problems that show that technological and knowledge advances are not always followed by moral and spiritual maturity. Departing from these conditions, this study aims to examine the concept of moral education in Al Ghazali's thought and examine its relevance in responding to the moral crisis of Generation Z in the digital era. This research uses a qualitative approach through library research. Data was obtained from primary sources in the form of Al-Ghazali's works and supported by various secondary literature that discusses moral education, characteristics of Generation Z, and educational challenges in the digital era. Data analysis was carried out using content analysis techniques to understand the main idea of Al-Ghazali's moral education and relate it to the reality of today's education. The results of the study show that moral education according to Al-Ghazali emphasizes the process of inner development through purification of the soul (tazkiyat al-nafs), balance between knowledge and practice, habituation of good behavior, and the importance of the role model of educators. These principles are still very relevant to be applied in the education of Generation Z, especially in the face of the negative influence of digitalization which tends to form an instant attitude and weaken moral control. This research offers novelty value by associating Al-Ghazali's moral education thinking with the context of Generation Z's life in the digital era. These findings show that Al-Ghazali's classical thought is not obsolete, but can be developed contextually through the integration of Islamic moral values with modern learning media and methods, thus remaining relevant and applicable without losing its spiritual dimension.

Abstract

Islamic Religious Education has a strategic role in shaping the character of students, especially discipline and responsibility attitudes that are the basis for success in the learning process and social life. This study aims to describe and analyze the strategies of Islamic Religious Education teachers in shaping student discipline and responsibility attitudes at SMP Negeri 2 Colomadu. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study type. The research subjects were Islamic Religious Education teachers, while data collection was carried out through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis is carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing by maintaining the validity of the data. The results of the study show that the formation of students' attitudes of discipline and responsibility is carried out through the example of teachers in daily behavior, habituation of religious and school cultural activities, giving appreciation and educational reprimands, and continuous communication between teachers and parents. The example of teachers is the main factor in internalizing character values, while habituating activities such as 3S, prayer before learning, and congregational Zuhur prayers play a role in fostering students' discipline and a sense of responsibility consistently. Giving appreciation and reprimands is carried out to strengthen positive behavior and correct violations in an educational manner. However, this study also found that there are obstacles in character development, especially the influence of mobile phone use and the family environment and student associations that are less supportive. This study concludes that the formation of character discipline and responsibility requires a sustainable strategy and synergy between schools and families so that character values can be optimally internalized in students.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine whether implementing an active knowledge sharing strategy can improve students' learning activities in Islamic religious lessons at SMA Batik 1 Surakarta. This research method uses descriptive techniques. Data collection methods include documentation, interviews, and observations. Data analysis was carried out using a non-statistical approach in which data were analyzed in the form of collected interviews, observation notes, and document results. The results of the study concluded that the active knowledge sharing strategy can improve student activity. This strategy will always use opinions and answers from others. However, teachers do not routinely use the use of active knowledge exchange because they rely on the material presented. So, a more optimal application is needed to improve learning activities for students in Islamic Religious Education subjects. The active knowledge sharing strategy in Islamic Religious Education learning can also improve learning effectiveness by optimizing student participation, building mutual respect and empathy, and promoting a deeper understanding of the learning material.
