Abstract

Character education is a fundamental aspect in shaping the character and civilization of a dignified nation, as mandated by the Indonesian National Education System Law (SISDIKNAS) No. 20 of 2003. However, reality shows the existence of a moral crisis among adolescents, exacerbated by the negative impacts of technological and informational developments. In response to this challenge, SMA Negeri 4 Padang has implemented an innovative character education program based on tahfizh and motivational lectures, known as “Pendekar Takesi.” This program, which has been running since 2018, aims to develop students’ spiritual, moral, and academic potential, as well as strengthen their religious identity. This study aims to analyze in depth the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the “Pendekar Takesi” program at SMA Negeri 4 Padang. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observations, interviews with the principal, vice principal for curriculum, program coordinators, and students, as well as documentation studies. Data validity was ensured through methodological and source triangulation. The findings indicate that the “Pendekar Takesi” program is well-planned, involving all school stakeholders, and designed to integrate the character values of the Profil Pelajar Pancasila (Pancasila Student Profile). Its implementation includes weekly tahfizh Al-Qur’an activities in class and monthly or semester-based motivational lectures in the school hall, facilitated by teachers and guest speakers. Program evaluation is conducted periodically at the end of each semester, with outcomes contributing to students’ Islamic Education grades. Although the program has succeeded in enhancing students’ tahfizh abilities and learning motivation, challenges remain, including funding, the availability of qualified tahfizh teachers, and limited student interest. Solutions implemented include optimizing school funds, empowering students as peer mentors, and providing continuous motivation. The “Pendekar Takesi” program has proven effective in fostering students who are faithful, intelligent, and high-achieving, making it a relevant model for replication in other schools with local contextual adjustments.

Abstract

Al-Azhar University, Egypt, presents a model of Islamic education that is moderate and holistic, relevant in addressing the challenges of modernity, radicalism, and the integration of Islamic tradition with scientific progress. This study identifies a gap in the previous literature, which generally partially discusses Islamic education in Egypt, focusing on the history of Al-Azhar or primary education, without comprehensively analysing the integration of traditional and modern values, system structure, and state policies. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilising data collection techniques through literature review and document analysis of scholarly journals, academic books, and official reports from the Ministry of Education and Al-Azhar University. Data analysis is conducted using qualitative content analysis methods, which include stages of collection, filtering, coding, categorisation, synthesis, and triangulation. The results show that the Islamic education system in Egypt has successfully integrated religious and general knowledge through a moderate and inclusive curriculum, supported by government policies such as the Al-Azhar Law of 1961 and the 2014 curriculum reform. However, educational access inequality, limited technological infrastructure, and conservative resistance continue to hinder comprehensive reform efforts. In conclusion, these findings offer important lessons for developing Islamic education in Indonesia and other Muslim countries.

Abstract

This study explores the transformational leadership of madrasah principals and its impact on teacher performance in three institutions in West Sumatra: Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri (MTsN) Model Padang, MTsN 1 Kota Pariaman, and MTsN 4 Pasaman. The research addresses challenges such as the suboptimal application of transformational leadership in achieving transformative governance and the inadequate execution of managerial and supervisory functions. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis, and analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion-drawing techniques. Data validity was ensured through extended engagement and consistent observation. The findings reveal that although transformational leadership practices are present, their implementation does not fully support transformative governance. Identified issues include teacher tardiness, insufficient administrative preparation, inappropriate teaching methods, weak classroom management, and the absence of evaluation and follow-up through remedial or enrichment programs. This study introduces the concept of Madrasah Head Leadership in 3 MTsN, which emphasizes a model of transformational leadership aligned with Ki Hajar Dewantara’s educational philosophy. This model focuses on openness to change and access to innovation in educational management. Through role modeling, motivation, and guidance, principals are expected to improve teacher performance and contribute to the overall development of the madrasah.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the acculturation and assimilation processes that ethnic Chinese in West Sumatra undergo upon converting to Islam, that the conversion does not lead to an outright abandonment of traditions. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive analysis approach, this research underscores how religious conversion fundamentally alters an individual's worldview and behavior. Converts to Islam are encouraged to earnestly learn and adhere to Sharia and Islamic teachings, initiating their spiritual journey with religious observances and distancing themselves from practices associated with their former beliefs. However, the conversion process is significantly influenced by one's environment, which plays a pivotal role in shaping the assimilation and acculturation experience of ethnic Chinese Muslims. This environment encompasses both familial and social contexts. The family environment, where individuals are connected by kinship—whether as children, spouses, or other familial roles—is marked by intensive interaction and communication. Yet, this close-knit communication does not necessarily guarantee a seamless conversion to another faith. Beyond the family, the surrounding social environment, including the workplace, extended family, and broader societal interactions, also impacts the conversion journey. Within these spheres, various factors either facilitate or hinder the process of embracing Islam for ethnic Chinese individuals. This study delves into these dynamics, examining the multifaceted influences on religious conversion and the subsequent negotiation between maintaining cultural heritage and adopting new religious identities. Through this analysis, the research seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between religion, culture, and identity among ethnic Chinese Muslims in West Sumatra

Abstract

Islamic education for the Chinese Muslim minority in West Sumatra is a process fraught with challenges while offering significant opportunities in a multicultural society. This study aims to explore the supporting and inhibiting factors influencing the implementation of Islamic education in this community and to formulate strategies for optimizing its potential. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the research employed in-depth interviews, direct observation, and literature analysis. The participants consisted of 15 Chinese Muslims (8 males and 7 females), aged between 25 and 60 years, including community leaders, educators, parents, and youth actively involved in Islamic educational settings in Padang and Payakumbuh. The findings reveal that social support from the local community, the presence of inclusive educational institutions, the role of organizations like PITI, and family economic stability are key supporting elements. However, the community faces significant challenges, including social discrimination, lack of support from formal institutions, difficulties in cultural integration, and limited awareness of the importance of religious education. This study recommends a collaborative approach between the government, educational institutions, and society to create a more inclusive educational ecosystem. Such efforts are expected to strengthen the Islamic identity of Chinese Muslims and encourage their active participation in a pluralistic society.

Abstract

The lack of discipline among students in the girls' dormitory of the Islamic boarding school was evident from the results of the researcher's observations. The Islamic boarding school enforced discipline through the role of teachers in the dormitory. This study aims to examine the extent of discipline in carrying out activities in the dormitory. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive qualitative approach. The data sources were fifteen informants consisting of three dormitory supervisors, eight teachers per room area, and four students living in the dormitory. The results of this study show that there are three forms of discipline in the girls' boarding school of the Islamic boarding school, namely: i) the form of student discipline in dormitory activities, ii) the role of teachers in improving student discipline in the girls' dormitory, iii) factors that hinder student discipline in the girls' dormitory. All of these findings are expected to serve as guidelines for dormitory administrators/teachers, particularly in improving student discipline, and as reference material for future researchers studying the same context and different issues.

Abstract

The development of Islamic education in Thailand reflects a complex dynamic shaped by historical, sociocultural, and governmental policy factors. This article aims to examine the historical background, educational system, and state policies that have influenced the existence of Islamic education, particularly in the southern provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, and Satun—regions known as centers of the Malay-Muslim community. This community has long played a pivotal role in preserving Islamic traditions through the provision of religious education. Islamic education in Thailand has evolved along two main pathways: traditional pondok institutions that emphasize classical Islamic studies, and modern madrasahs that integrate religious curricula with general subjects in accordance with national education standards. Since the 1960s, the Thai government has implemented policies to modernize Islamic education as part of a broader strategy to improve educational quality and promote social integration. However, these policies have also raised concerns about potential cultural assimilation and the diminishing autonomy of Islamic educational institutions. Using a qualitative approach through a literature review method, the findings reveal that Islamic education in Thailand continues to undergo adaptation and renewal. Despite facing structural and political challenges, Islamic educational institutions remain essential in maintaining the religious identity and cultural heritage of the Muslim minority in a predominantly Buddhist nation.
