Abstract

‘California’ papaya is a newly released papaya cultivar in Indonesia that has a very short shelf-life. Increasing demands in both local and export markets warrant the need for a proper postharvest technology to prolong its shelf-life. This research was conducted to study the effects of fruit coatings (chitosan, KD-112, plastic wrapping), fungicide Prochloraz, and storage temperatures on its fruit shelf-life and quality. Three parallel experiments were conducted with treatments arranged in a completely randomized design of a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design.  The first factor was chitosan (with and without 1.25% chitosan), or KD-112 (with and without 14% KD-112), or plastic wrapping (with and without one layer plastic wrapping), the second was Prochloraz (with and without 0.67 mL/L Prochloraz), and the third was storage temperature (27-28 and 16-18 ºC). While Prochloraz did not affect fruit variables, cooler temperature and coatings lengthened fruit shelf-life with the best effect shown by plastic wrapping which lengthened fruit shelf-life by 13 days, without affecting fruit qualities. Significant effects of coating and cooler temperature determined their combined effects, with the best effect achieved by applying the three factors that lengthened fruit shelf-life by 11-23 days longer.

Abstract

Disposal of laundry waste directly in the river is the cause of high river pollution. Laundry wastewater resulted in an increase in BOD and COD parameters so that it had a negative impact on ecosystem life. The coagulation process using chemicals can reduce BOD and COD parameters in wastewater but have negative effects on health. Chitosan from snail shells can be used as an alternative coagulant that is environmentally friendly because it contains about 70% - 80% chitin. This study aims to synthesize chitosan biocoagulants from snail shells and to test the effectiveness of snail shell chitosan in the treatment of laundry wastewater. Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) analysis showed that the deacetylation rate of chitosan obtained was 78.06%. Coagulation was carried out on wastewater using variable concentrations and stirring speed. The results showed that the optimum dose of snail shell chitosan biocoagulant was at a concentration of 0.4%. At this dose, the coagulant can bind to the most optimal contaminants so that it can reduce the BOD and COD values in laundry waste and the Fast Stirring Speed of 100 rpm is the optimum stirring speed because large speeds will produce excessive shear forces and prevent the desired floc arrangement.

Abstract

Testing is a process of implementing a program with the aim of finding an error. A good test case is one of the tests that have the possibility of finding an undisclosed error. One of the existing types of testing is the Concolic Unit Testing Engine. In this research, testing is applied using the Jcute tool, which is a tool to systematically and automatically test sequential C programs (including instructions) and Java programs together. This test is carried out on the search function of an element of data in the Binary Search Search Algorithm. However, to check whether concolic testing can detect bugs in the software practically through case studies. This research describes a case study of the application of a test tool to a Java application. Through this research, we tested the path coverage and Branches Covered. We can also find out the details of total branches covered; total functions invoked, percentage of branches covered and the number of iterations. JCUTE can also find an interleaving of two sequences or circuits that results in an infinite loop.

Abstract

Cigarette smoke consists of a mix of chemical substances in the form of gases and dispersed particles. Recently, more than 4000 compounds presented incigarette smoke have been isolated. Most of these compounds are toxic to our body’s cells. Toxic gases including carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen cyanide(HCN), nitrogen oxides, and volatile chemicals such as nitrosamines, formaldehyde are found in in cigarette smoke. besides toxic compounds, cigarettesmoke also containsfree radicalsincluding peroxynitrite, hydrogen peroxide, and superoxide. These free radicals may accelerate cellular damage due tooxidative stress. Targets od free radical attacks include DNA, protein and lipids. The harmful chemicals in form of gases and volatile substances in cigarettescause multiple genetic mutations. the combination of genetic mutations and DNA damage lead to genetic instability and it may cause cancer. OxidativeDNA damage caused by cigarette smoke can be identified with the presence of 8-oxoguanosine used as one of the biomarkers for oxidative DNA damage.Increased concentration of 8-oxoguanosine in DNA has an important role in carcinogenesis and triggers tumor cells. both active and passive smokers havebeen reported to have an elevated concentration of 8-oxoguanosine in their lung tissue and peripheral leukocytes as well as for passive smokers. This paperprovide informations and understanding of the effects of smoking on the genetic stability, especially in the DNA molecule.
