Abstract

According to Van Hiele, in understanding geometry, students need to understand five stages, namely stage 1 (introduction stage), stage 2 (analysis stage), stage 3 (sequencing stage), stage 4 (deduction stage), and stage 5 (accuracy stage). Each student has different geometric thinking abilities. This study aims to examine the geometric abilities of junior high school students in the material of flat-sided geometry according to Van Hiele's Theory. This research belongs to the type of qualitative research with a case study design. It was conducted at three schools in Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The subjects were students of SMP Negeri 1 Padang, SMP Negeri 7 Padang, and SMP Negeri 25 Padang. Data collection was carried out using tests, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out with the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and data verification or drawing conclusions. The data originality technique was carried out with the triangulation technique, where the researcher compared the test data with the results of interviews with students. Of the 94 students (male = 38, female 56) tested based on the geometric thinking level of Van Hiele Theory, 92.55% of the students reached the Van Hiele thinking stage at the visualization level. As many as 45.74% of students reached the level of geometric analysis, and 6.38% of students reached the level of abstraction. For the level of deduction and accuracy, no one has been able to solve the problem. The results obtained in this study are that most students are still at stages 1 and 2, unlike van Hiele's opinion, which revealed that the level of geometric thinking for junior high school students is at level 3. According to the study results, it is essential to carry out further checks on the level of geometric thinking of junior high school students in other areas.

Abstract

In this study, we examine the effect of contextual group guided discovery (CGGD) learning approach on students' mathematical understanding and reasoning. This study was conducted through a quasi-experimental method with a control group pre and post-test design. The participants of this study were two groups of 4th-grade students in Kuningan, Indonesia. Each group was comprised of 22 students (N=44). While the experimental group was conducting mathematics learning with the CGGD learning approach, the control group was conducting mathematics learning with problem-based learning (PBL). The data were collected through a test of students' mathematical understanding (TSMU) and a test of students' mathematical reasoning (TSMR) developed by researchers. The results showed that there were significant differences in the gain score of students' mathematical understanding (SMU) (U = 134.00, Z= -2.539, P = 0.011 0.05) and students' mathematical reasoning (SMR) (U = 139.500, Z= -2.412, P = 0.016 0.05) between the experimental and the control group . The gain score and post-test score of SMU and SMR on the experimental group that implemented the CGGD learning approach were significantly higher than the control group. Therefore, we conclude that the CGGD learning approach was proven influential to empower SMU and SMR.

Abstract

Social arithmetic is one of the essential subjects for 7th-grade students because it is related to everyday life. However, the facts show that many students still have learning problems about the application of social arithmetic. The obstacle experienced by students is due to the students' obstacle in learning social arithmetic. This study aimed to obtain previous research on junior high school students' learning obstacles on social arithmetic. This study method is a systematic literature review (SLR), a descriptive-based survey in the form of an analysis of 23 articles from the Google Scholar database, with the keywords learning obstacle, analysis error, and difficulties in social arithmetic. The results showed that three types of learning obstacles, namely didactical obstacles, ontogenic obstacles, and epistemological obstacles. In addition, obstacles occur in concepts (profit, loss, discount), procedures (modeling and concluding), operational techniques (multiplication of percentage and division), and textbooks used because of the language that is difficult to understand and does not fit the context recognized by students. The research implies providing information on the obstacles experienced by students and research gaps from the results of this review for future research, namely research on analyzing textbooks.

Abstract

In some cases, Statistical learning only applies some formulas without paying attention to developing students’ reasoning ability. So, statistical learning can cause missed conception to the students. A teacher should identify the students’ learning obstacles to achieve the learning objectives. This study aims to know the students’ learning obstacles in solving statistical reasoning problems from two aspects. The first is from the emic aspect; it is a student's viewpoint toward solving the statistical problem. The second is from the aspect of ethics; it is a student viewpoint toward the teacher’s teaching technique done in teaching statistics. This qualitative study employs the explorative case study with epistemology study to discuss the students’ learning obstacles. From the test result and interview of three participants, it is concluded that the students face some obstacles in statistical reasoning problem-solving. The teacher also still used conventional methods in teaching the students.
