Abstract

The purpose of this research was to develop valid and practical TPACK-based e-modules for prospective mathematics teachers. The development uses the SAM model which provides a systematic and iterative approach consisting of 3 phases, i.e., preparation, iterative design, and iterative development. The research was conducted at Universitas Samudra with the development of an e-module on one of the differential equation materials, namely homogeneous differential equations. Modules are designed using flipbooks, integrating material, problem solving exercises, and ending with project students compiling instructional designs on material mathematics. The results of the assessment by the validator team (consisting of material experts, linguists and media experts) obtained 82.22% for the level of validity, with a very decent category. On the other hand, the average student response regarding the practicality of the e-module is at 87.01 in the very practical category. Thus, the e-module on TPACK-based differential equation material is feasible and practical for use by pre-service mathematics teachers at Universitas Samudra.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and evaluate an offline digital learning media based on GeoGebra, designed specifically for technology-constrained school settings, to enhance students' spatial ability in learning flat-sided geometric shapes. Employing a Design-Based Research approach, the study involved limited trials with 18 students and one teacher, followed by implementation in another school with 40 students divided into experimental and control groups. Quantitative data were analyzed using ANCOVA, revealing a significant difference (F(1,41)=28.388, p<0.001, η^2=0.409). Qualitative analysis indicated increased student engagement and spatial understanding. Featuring 3D visualization and interactive simulations in an HTML5 offline format, the offline media offers flexible and accessible learning for under-resourced environments. Theoretically, this research extends the media of Dual Coding Theory and Design-Based Research (DBR) within resource-limited educational contexts by demonstrating how offline visual-spatial media can effectively bridge abstract geometric concepts. Practically, it provides a scalable, concrete solution for educators in technology-constrained schools to implement interactive, GeoGebra-based mathematical learning without requiring internet access or high-end infrastructure.

Abstract

Mathematics anxiety is a psychological condition that affects students’ learning processes and is characterized by feelings of anxiety, tension, or fear when dealing with mathematics. This study aims to analyze the causes of students’ mathematics anxiety and identify possible strategies to address it based on evidence from students and teachers. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design, supported by descriptive data from a mathematics anxiety questionnaire. The participants were 39 students from Class XI F at SMAN 17 Bandung, with six students selected for interviews based on their anxiety levels. Data were collected through the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) questionnaire, semi-structured interviews with students and teachers, and classroom observations. The questionnaire data were analyzed descriptively, while interview and observation data were analyzed thematically. The results showed that 66.67% of students experienced moderate anxiety, 25.64% experienced low anxiety, and 7.69% experienced high anxiety. The dominant indicator was cognitive disturbance at 59%, followed by negative attitudes toward mathematics at 58% and somatic symptoms at 54%. The factors causing mathematics anxiety included internal factors, such as insufficient mastery of prerequisite material, learning style, and fear of making mistakes, as well as external factors, such as fast-paced learning, curriculum pressure, peer competition, and parental expectations. The possible strategies to reduce mathematics anxiety include cognitive support through self-regulated learning and heterogeneous group learning, emotional support through positive affirmation and collaborative learning, and pedagogical adaptations through multimodal learning, remedial instruction, and constructivist approaches. These findings highlight the importance of integrating psychological and pedagogical support to reduce mathematics anxiety in school mathematics learning.

Abstract

Mathematical resilience and gender are often associated with differences in students’ skills and ways of thinking while learning mathematics. This study aims to simultaneously describe students’ mathematical procedural abilities in terms of mathematical resilience and gender. Data were collected from 19 participants selected through purposive sampling based on criteria relevant to the research variables. A procedural fluency test and a student mathematical resilience questionnaire were used; both instruments had been previously validated by experts, who concluded that they were suitable for use. The data analysis technique employed was ANCOVA (Analysis of Covariance). The results indicated that both resilience and gender appeared to influence students’ mathematical procedural fluency; however, resilience was the factor that made a meaningful difference, not gender. Qualitative analysis, including resilience questionnaires, interviews, and test result descriptions, revealed that both male and female students can demonstrate strong mathematical procedural fluency when they possess high mathematical resilience. As a result, gender differences did not emerge as a significant influence, as both groups had equal opportunities when their mathematical resilience was high. The absence of a significant gender effect is suspected to be due to the relatively small sample size used in this study, which may not have provided sufficient statistical power to detect the actual effect. Due to the limitations of this study, these findings should be considered preliminary. Further research is needed using a larger sample size and more representative sampling to better examine the combined influence of gender and resilience on mathematical procedural fluency.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using effective sentences in writing story problems related to integer arithmetic operations. The research methodology used is descriptive analysis with a qualitative approach, and case study design to explore in depth a phenomenon or problem. Data were collected through a documentary study of story problems used in resources for arithmetic procedures involving integers. Furthermore, interviews were conducted with teachers to find out their perspectives on the formulation of the problems. The data analysis technique was carried out by categorizing sentences in narrative story problems and assessing their effectiveness based on linguistic criteria and clarity of information. The results of the study showed that most of the narrative story problems analyzed did not fully meet the criteria for effective sentences. There were vague, long, and imprecise sentences so that they did not convey the information needed. Certain questions also contained terminology that was less familiar to students. This study identified the need for improvements in sentence structure and vocabulary selection to be more appropriate to students' level of understanding. This study shows the need for teacher training in composing effective sentences for story problems in order to improve the quality of questions presented to students.

Abstract

This research investigated the necessity of standardizing the audio representation method of mathematical notations in fraction learning among students with visual impairments. A descriptive qualitative case study design was used to collect data by observing classroom situations and conducting semi-structured interviews with one mathematics teacher and three visually impaired students at a state special school in West Java, Indonesia. Thematic analysis extracted four general themes: systemic variance in symbol notation practice, structural ambiguity leading to interpretation errors, institutional lack of symbol standardization frameworks, and multivariate rationales for standardization. The findings showed that variations in audio representation significantly affected students’ understanding, particularly for mixed fractions and multi-level expressions. Estimation errors worsened with increased complexity, ranging from 97% accuracy for simple fractions to just 15% for multi-operation expressions. Consequently, this research suggests the development of Indonesian MathSpeak guidelines and the implementation of multi-school trials to adopt uniform audio representation standards, ensuring equitable mathematics learning experiences for visually impaired students.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to systematically examine the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in supporting students’ mathematical problem-solving processes at the secondary school level. It addresses the current gap in the literature by providing a focused synthesis of how ICT is utilized in mathematics education to enhance students’ problem-solving abilities. Methodology: A Systematic Literature Review was conducted following the PRISMA protocol. Articles were sourced from reputable databases, such as Scopus, Taylor & Francis Online (Tandfonline), and Education Resources Information Center (ERIC). Through a rigorous selection process based on relevance and quality criteria, 25 peer-reviewed articles published within the past ten years were analyzed and synthesized. Main Findings: The review reveals that ICT is widely employed to improve the quality of instruction and students’ problem-solving skills in mathematics. ICT supports learning across various topics such as geometry, calculus, and algebra, mainly through visualization tools and interactive simulations. Furthermore, ICT serves multiple roles: as a medium for ICT-assisted instruction, a complement to instructional materials, a platform for online learning, an assessment tool and a resource for student-directed learning, and as an adaptive and diagnostic learning systems. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study contributes a focused and systematic analysis of how ICT specifically enhances mathematical problem-solving at the secondary level, a perspective that has been underrepresented in existing reviews. By identifying the specific functions and impacts of ICT in this context, the study lays the groundwork for future research and development of ICT-based pedagogical strategies in mathematics education.
