Abstract

This study aims to describe the beliefs of fifth-grade elementary school teachers and students regarding mathematical problem solving, as well as their approaches to teaching and learning problem-solving activities. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method, focusing on the alignment between teachers’ and students’ perceptions of problem solving within an authentic classroom context.The participants consisted of three teachers from different elementary schools in Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan, and six students identified by the teachers three categorized as successful and three as less successful in solving mathematical problems. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and documentation, using an interview guide developed to explore teachers’ beliefs and students’ problem-solving strategies. The validity of data was ensured through source triangulation and member checking. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s (1992) interactive model, which includes stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed three main points: (1) teachers generally associated students’ problem-solving success with innate ability, while students attributed success to effort and persistence; (2) both teachers and students shared a narrow understanding of problem solving, viewing it mainly as procedural computation rather than reasoning or exploration; and (3) teachers assessed students’ success primarily based on accuracy in calculation, resulting in classroom practices that emphasized procedures over conceptual understanding.In conclusion, the study highlights the need to strengthen teachers’ pedagogical beliefs and promote reasoning-oriented instruction in mathematics classrooms. However, the limited number of participants restricts the generalizability of the findings. Future studies with larger samples and classroom observations are recommended to validate and expand these results.

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to describe the need for the development of an Realistic Mathematics Education (RME)-based audiobook for fourth-grade elementary school students. This study focused on two aspects, namely (1) the interest of fourth-grade students in learning mathematics; and (2) the need of RME-based audiobook media by fourth-grade teachers. The participants of this study were 135 students and 12 teachers of grade IV at four elementary schools in the Merauke area, Indonesia. Using a qualitative methodology, the data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study revealed that the interest of fourth-grade students in learning mathematics was still lacking. The teacher's way of teaching was considered unattractive and the mathematics learning materials delivered by the teacher were difficult to understand. Meanwhile, the need of RME-based audiobook media by the fourth-grade students and teachers was quite urgent. It was because 79% of the teachers had never used audiobook media when teaching mathematics. In addition, 53.7% of the teachers had never taught mathematics using the RME approach.Keywords: development, audiobooks, realistic mathematics education.AbstrakTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan kebutuhan pengembangan audiobook berbasis RME untuk siswa kelas IV SD. Penelitian ini difokuskan pada dua aspek, yaitu (1) minat siswa kelas IV dalam pembelajaran matematika; dan (2) kebutuhan media audiobook berbasis RME oleh guru kelas IV. Partisipan penelitian ini adalah 135 siswa dan 12 guru kelas IV di empat sekolah dasar di wilayah Merauke, Indonesia. Menggunakan metode kualitatif, data dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa minat siswa kelas IV dalam pembelajaran matematika masih kurang. Cara mengajar guru dinilai kurang menarik dan materi pembelajaran matematika yang disampaikan guru sulit dipahami. Sementara itu, kebutuhan media audiobook berbasis RME oleh siswa dan guru kelas IV cukup mendesak. Hal ini dikarenakan 79% guru belum pernah menggunakan media audiobook saat mengajar matematika. Selain itu, 53,7% guru belum pernah mengajar matematika dengan pendekatan RME.Kata kunci: pengembangan, buku audio, pendidikan matematika realistik.

Abstract

AbstractThe research aimed to conduct an in-depth investigation of the learning obstacles faced by elementary students in the concept of fractions. Employing a qualitative method, this study involved the fourth and fifth graders of elementary schools as the participants. The data were collected both quantitatively and qualitatively. The quantitative data were collected through a test on the concept of fractions developed by the research team. Meanwhile, the qualitative data were collected via interviews. The data were then analyzed using quantitative and qualitative methods. The results of the quantitative data analysis indicated that the average number of students who answered the overall test questions correctly was 13.33%. Through qualitative analysis, it was found that the students experienced three types of learning obstacles including epistemological, didactical, and ontogenical obstacles. Epistemological obstacles were faced by the students in the construction of fractions as parts of a whole in the visualization of the model area. Didactical obstacles occurred in the construction of fractions as parts of a whole in the visualization of discrete models and improper fractions. Ontogenical obstacles occurred in the construct of fractions as measures, especially placing fractions on the number line. The findings of this study can be used as a basis for educators to develop learning designs on the concept of fractions in elementary schools.Keywords: concept of fractions, learning obstacles, elementary school students. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk melakukan investigasi mendalam tentang hambatan belajar yang dialami siswa sekolah dasar pada konsep pecahan. Dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif, penelitian ini melibatkan siswa kelas IV dan V sekolah dasar sebagai partisipan penelitian. Data dikumpulkan secara kuantitatif maupun kualitatif. Data kuantitatif dikumpulkan melalui tes konsep pecahan yang disusun dan dikembangkan tim peneliti. Sementara itu, data kualitatif diperoleh melalui wawancara. Data yang telah diperoleh kemudian dianalisis menggunakan metode kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Hasil analisis data kuantitatif menunjukkan bahwa banyaknya siswa yang berhasil menjawab keseluruhan pertanyaan tes dengan benar adalah 13.33%. Melalui analisis kualitatif, ditemukan bahwa siswa mengalami tiga jenis hambatan belajar yaitu hambatan epistimologis, didaktis, dan ontogenis. Hambatan epistimologis dialami siswa pada konstruk pecahan sebagai bagian dari keseluruhan dalam visualisai model area. Hambatan didaktis terjadi pada konstruk pecahan sebagai bagian dari keseluruhan dalam visualisasi model diskrit serta pecahan campuran. Hambatan ontogenis terjadi pada konstruk pecahan sebagai ukuran khususnya menempatkan pecahan pada garis bilangan. Temuan pada penelitian dapat digunakan sebagai dasar bagi pendidik dalam mengembangkan desain pembelajaran pada konsep pecahan di sekolah dasar.Kata kunci: konsep pecahan, hambatan belajar, siswa sekolah dasar.

Abstract

AbstractThis research aims to determine the influence of discovery learning on the mathematical problem-solving ability of elementary school students. The research used a quasi-experimental method with two classes, namely the experimental class and the control class. The population used in this research was 64 fifth-grade elementary school students. The sampling technique was random, while data collection was carried out using pretest and posttest instruments. The research results show that the influence of discovery learning in mathematics learning has a significant impact on improving students' problem-solving abilities. The discovery learning model with competitive and collaborative group learning concepts creates an interesting and motivating learning environment for students. By implementing discovery learning, students become more involved and enthusiastic in learning mathematics. They participate actively in group games that involve discussion, teamwork, and joint problem-solving.Keywords: discovery learning, problem solving abilities, elementary school students. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh discovery learning terhadap kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematika siswa sekolah dasar. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode quasi eksperimen dengan dua kelas, yaitu kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol. Populasi yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas V sekolah dasar yang berjumlah 60 orang. Teknik pengambilan sampel secara acak, sedangkan pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan instrumen pretest dan posttest. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pengaruh discovery learning dalam pembelajaran matematika memberikan dampak yang signifikan terhadap peningkatan kemampuan pemecahan masalah siswa. Model discovery learning dengan konsep pembelajaran kelompok kompetitif dan kolaboratif menciptakan lingkungan belajar yang menarik dan memotivasi siswa. Dengan menerapkan discovery learning, siswa menjadi lebih terlibat dan antusias dalam pembelajaran matematika. Mereka berpartisipasi aktif dalam permainan kelompok yang melibatkan diskusi, kerja sama tim, dan pemecahan masalah bersama.Kata kunci: pembelajaran discovery, kemampuan pemecahan masalah, siswa sekolah dasar.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze one of the mathematics textbooks published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Then, the researcher will provide recommendations regarding the presentation of easy-to-understand material based on analysis of techniques, technology, and theory on each problem given by students' mathematics textbooks. This type of research is qualitative with a didactic anthropological theory approach, especially in praxeology. Data collection techniques in the library by reading, recording and processing these sources as research material. Researchers choose books based on the criteria needed to obtain relevant data. These criteria include (1) there is a problem in presenting mathematical material, (2) there is an author's name, and (3) publications from the Ministry of Education and Culture. The researcher found problems in the 2017 revised edition of class XI students' mathematics textbooks finding formulas and examples of arithmetic and geometric sequences. The study results showed several problems presenting the material for arithmetic and geometric sequences, which would raise student learning barriers. The identified Learning barriers are ontogenic, epistemological, and didactical obstacles. With these obstacles, the researcher provides alternative designs which are expected to minimize the occurrence of student learning barriers. So that the design alternatives provided can reduce obstacles for students in thinking and understanding the material of arithmetic and geometric sequences

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe the mathematical problem-solving abilities of students in set theory, specifically within a seventh-grade class at a private school in Bandung. The research employed a qualitative case study approach, collecting data through tests and documentation. A diagnostic test served as the primary instrument for evaluating students' problem-solving skills. The findings reveal distinct patterns in how students approach mathematical problems, correlating with their achievement levels. High-achieving students consistently followed Polya's four stages of problem-solving: understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and looking back to reflect on their solution. In contrast, moderate-achieving students generally adhered to the first two stages, namely understanding the problem and carrying out the plan, often omitting the reflective stage. Low-achieving students predominantly focused on the initial stage of understanding the problem, struggling to advance beyond this point. The study highlights that the ability to understand the problem is the most developed skill among students, as it is the step where most students succeeded. However, devising a plan was identified as the most challenging aspect, with the fewest students able to correctly formulate a strategy for solving the problems. These findings suggest that while understanding is a common strength, there is a need for targeted interventions to improve students' abilities to plan and execute problem-solving strategies effectively

Abstract

This research was carried out at a STEM institution with a focus on evaluating the implementation of STEM Integrated learning. The aim of this research is to evaluate using the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, Product) model for STEM Integrated learning and assess students' learning achievements in the field of mathematics studies, as well as evaluate the effectiveness of the STEM Integrated learning process using the CIPP model in STEM institutions. The effectiveness of the learning process is assessed based on the level of achievement of learning objectives that have been set at the beginning of the learning period, namely in all aspects of STEM. This research adopts a qualitative approach using the CIPP model, which allows evaluation of aspects of context, input, process and product to achieve effective learning. Research participants involve students, STEM instructors. Primary data was collected through observation instruments, while secondary data was obtained from documentation and interviews. The results of the research show that the application of Integrated STEM learning in STEM-EC UPI can be categorized as good in the input component but can be categorized as quite good in the context, process and product components. This is due to the less than optimal mathematical aspects in the STEM Integrated approach in terms of instructor qualifications and aspect assessment results. mathematics students.

Abstract

This research investigated the necessity of standardizing the audio representation method of mathematical notations in fraction learning among students with visual impairments. A descriptive qualitative case study design was used to collect data by observing classroom situations and conducting semi-structured interviews with one mathematics teacher and three visually impaired students at a state special school in West Java, Indonesia. Thematic analysis extracted four general themes: systemic variance in symbol notation practice, structural ambiguity leading to interpretation errors, institutional lack of symbol standardization frameworks, and multivariate rationales for standardization. The findings showed that variations in audio representation significantly affected students’ understanding, particularly for mixed fractions and multi-level expressions. Estimation errors worsened with increased complexity, ranging from 97% accuracy for simple fractions to just 15% for multi-operation expressions. Consequently, this research suggests the development of Indonesian MathSpeak guidelines and the implementation of multi-school trials to adopt uniform audio representation standards, ensuring equitable mathematics learning experiences for visually impaired students.

Abstract

Mathematical communication and connection abilities are essential competencies for mathematics learning because they help students build meaningful conceptual understanding and solve problems more systematically. This study aims to analyze high school students’ abilities in mathematical communication and connection with quadratic functions. This study employed a descriptive mixed-method approach, combining quantitative analysis of students’ test results with qualitative analysis of their written responses. The research instrument consisted of six open-ended questions, designed around indicators of mathematical communication and connection abilities. Data were collected through written tests. The responses were quantitatively scored and categorized using Arikunto’s criteria, followed by an in-depth qualitative analysis to examine students’ mathematical communication and connection processes.Students’ responses in each category were then analyzed in depth to identify the characteristics of their abilities. The results show that students’ mathematical communication and connection abilities range from low to high, with most students falling into the medium category. Further analysis revealed that students who demonstrated good communication abilities did not always exhibit strong connection abilities, and vice versa These findings are supported by the distribution of students’ abilities, where 66.67% of students were categorized as having moderate mathematical communication ability and 80.56% as having moderate mathematical connection ability. Despite this, a deeper analysis of each indicator reveals that the weakest performance was found in the ability to connect mathematical concepts to real-life contexts, as most students failed to respond to problems requiring contextual explanation. In addition, several common error patterns emerged. Students with low communication ability tended to omit important information, use incorrect mathematical notation, and fail to explain their reasoning. Meanwhile, students with moderate to high communication ability often demonstrated correct procedures but struggled to establish connections between concepts, particularly when applying quadratic functions in different contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates junior high school students’ learning obstacles in similarity and congruence based on their mathematical reasoning abilities. Conducted with eighth-grade students at a private Islamic junior high school in Bandung, the study employed a qualitative approach using reasoning tests, interviews, and analysis of students’ written responses. The findings show that students at all reasoning levels experienced epistemological, ontogenic, and didactical obstacles. Misconceptions about corresponding elements, proportional relationships, and criteria for similarity and congruence reflected epistemological obstacles. Ontogenic obstacles appeared in difficulties sustaining reasoning, verifying solutions, and connecting visual and symbolic representations. Didactical obstacles were indicated by students’ dependence on procedural guidance and difficulties constructing diagrams. These challenges disrupted conjecturing, justification, and verification processes, particularly among students with moderate and low reasoning abilities. The study highlights the need for reasoning-oriented geometry instruction that strengthens conceptual understanding, justification, and verification in mathematics learning.
