Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research was to find out what types of cohesive devices used in analytical exposition texts written by the second year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru and to know how the frequency of appropriate and inappropriate of cohesive devices used in analytical exposition texts written by the second year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. This was a descriptive research. The data were collected in April. The participants of this research were 35 students of class XI TKJ 1 of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. The students were selected to be the sample using cluster sampling technique. The writer collected the data by using writing test with four topics provided, the students asked to choose one topic. The result of this research showed that the students used 3 types of grammatical cohesion, they are reference, substitution, conjunction and 5 types ef lexical cohesion, they are repetition, collocation, hyponym, synonym, and antonym. The most frequent of appropriate and inappropriate of grammatical cohesive devices used by students was reference 341 ( 52.54%) with the correct use 314 ( 92.08% ) and the wrong use 27 ( 7.92% ). Then, followed by conjunction 107 (19.53%) which the correct use 266 ( 87.21% ) and the wrong use 39 ( 12.79% ), substitution 3 ( 0.46% ) which all the devices were correct, and ellipsis which 0%. The most frequent types of lexical cohesive devices used by students was repetition 162 ( 86.17% ) , collocation 12 ( 6.38% ), hyponym 7 ( 3.72% ), synonym 6 ( 3.19% ), antonym 1 ( 0.53% ) which all the devices were correct except metonym 0 ( 0% ).Key words: Cohesive devices, Writing, Analytical exposition texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to find out the effect of using Jigsaw method on the ability of the first year students of SMA PGRI Pekanbaru in comprehending narrative texts. This is a pre-experimental research conducted by using a pre-test – treatment – post-test design.. The population of this study was the first year students of SMA PGRI Pekanbaru which consisted of 3 classes with the total of 115 students. The sample of this study was X.2 of social science class with 40 students.The writer, during treat the students, found that students’ motivation to read the text increase. Besides, students got more confidences to split out their opinion while discussion and present the result in front of the class. After treatment was held, the writer distributed the tests. The instrument of the research was a reading test with multiple choice type. The result showed a strong correlation between Jigsaw method and students’ reading comprehension. The results of data analysis showed that the mean score of pre-test was 64.03, and the mean score of post-test was 82.00. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and the post-test because the t-test observed was higher than t-table. In other words, the alternative hypothesis of this research was accepted. It means that Jigsaw method can be used as an alternative strategy in the teaching of reading.Keywords: Jigsaw, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine how effective the Scaffolded Reading Experience Strategy is in teaching students to read descriptive texts. The analysis used in this research was descriptive. The population of this research was all the first year students of SMA N 1 Reteh in the 2019/2020 Academic Year and one teacher. The sample for this research was 34 students from X MIPA 2 class who had been selected by using the cluster-random-sampling technique. A questionnaire and an interview were used to collect data. The questionnaire consisted of 10 statements and the interview consisted of 10 questions. Based on the result of the questionnaire, the mean score is 4.05, which means that the use of Scaffolded Reading Experience influenced by reading activity in the learning process in English class is high. Based on the result of the interview, the teaching outcomes which used the Scaffolded Reading Experience Strategy were good. The teacher said that the Scaffolded Reading Experience Strategy was easy to use and helped the students to understand the descriptive text more easily. Following comprehension, the teacher stated that some of the students could create their own descriptive text, though some students still struggled with writing the text. But after the students asked for re-explanation, the teacher explained again until the students understood a little more. The teacher thought the quality was good. The teacher stated that she would use the Scaffolded Reading Experience Strategy as her first choice in the classroom teaching and learning process and that she would recommend the Scaffolded Reading Experience Strategy to her peers for teaching other subjects.Key Words: Using, Scaffolded Reading Experience Strategy, Reading, Descriptive Text.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to find out students’ difficulties in understanding descriptive texts at the second year of SMAN 3 Langgam. This is descriptive quantitative research. The population of this research was the whole students of the second year of SMAN 3 Langgam. The sample of this research was 34 students of XI IIS 1 class who have been selected by using the cluster-random-sampling technique. The data were collected by using tests and questionnaires. The test consisted of 40 questions and the questionnaire consisted of 25 questions. The findings of this study based on the percentage of incorrect answers of reading test showed that there are eight components of reading comprehension. Six of them were categorized high level as difficult question aspects for the students. There were difficulties in identifying vocabulary, generic structure, factual information, reference, language features, and social function. Two of them were categorized medium level as a not difficult question. There was difficulty in identifying the main idea and inference. Based on the result of the questionnaire, the students felt difficulties in understanding descriptive texts because of internal and external factors. There was limited vocabulary knowledge, weak verbal reasoning, problems with recalling information, difficulty understand the text because of the level of the text, lack of familiarity with the subject matter, lack of fluency in reading, problems with processing information after reading, and inadequate use of reading strategies in the teaching and learning process.Key Words: Analysis, Students’ Difficulties, Reading, Descriptive Text.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was conducted to find out the students’ ability incomprehending recount texts. This descriptive research design took place in SMP N 1Kuantan Hilir Seberang. The sample was 22 students from VIII2 class that wereselected by using cluster random sampling. There were 40 questions in this test. Theresearcher used the validity and reliability formula of theory Heaton 1991 in analysisdata by using manual calculation, it was found that the reliability of the test was 1.13which means that the reliability of the test was very high. The data were analyzed bycalculating the students’ score individually and finding out the mean score. Thestudents’ scores were classified into four ability levels; poor, mediocre, good, andexcellent. Based on the results of this research, the students’ ability in comprehendingrecount text at second year of SMP N 1 Kuantan Hilir Seberang was in good level.Meanwhile, the mean score of the whole students’ scores was 71.9. It was found that thehighest mean score is in finding social function and finding generic structure with themean score 75.4. The lowest aspect in comprehending recount text was in makinginferences with the mean score was 65.45.Key Words: Students’ Ability, Comprehending Recount Text

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research was aimed to find out the ability of the second year students of SMA Negeri 1 Bangun Purba Rokan Hulu in comprehending analytical exposition texts. The research data were collected in September 2017. The subject of this research was class XI Nature Science 1 which consisted of 23 students. The data were collected by administering a test to the students in the form of multiple choice test. The test contained 40 items. Based on the data analysis it was found that the highest score obtained by the students was in the aspect of finding factual information with the mean score of 74 (good level), and the lowest score was in the aspect of identifying social function with the mean score of 51 (mediocre level). As a conclusion, the ability of the second year students in comprehending analytical exposition texts was in good level (mean score 65.5). So, it is recommended that the students must be given more practice and read books in order to improve reading skill, especially in identifying social function, this is due to the fact that the students got lowest score in that aspect. And for other researchers are recommended to conduct another research design about analytical exposition text.Key Words: Students’ ability, analytical exposition texts

Abstract

Abstract : This study aims to find out the effect of discovery learning on reading comprehension of the first year students of SMAN 1 Pangkalan Kerinci in descriptive text.The data were collected in July to August. The population of this research is the first year students of SMAN 1 Pangkalan Kerinci. The number of sample is 35 students who are chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. This research is a pre experimental research with one group pre-test post-test design. The instrument to collect the data was multiple choice tests with 25 questions. The result of the data analysis showed that the mean score of pre-test is 64,8 while in post-test is 73. 05. It showed that the mean score of post-test was higher than pre-test. Hence, there is a significant effect effect of discovery learning on reading comprehension of the first year students of SMAN 1 Pangkalan Kerinci in descriptive text.Keywords: Pre Experimental, Discovery Laerning, Reading Comprehension, Senior High School, First Year Students.

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research is to find out the level of students’ ability in reading comprehension and writing ability in recount texts and the correlation between those variables of the second year students of SMAN 1 Muaro Sentajo. The sample of this research was class XI IPS 2 which consist 25 students. The data were collected by using two kinds of test, reading comprehension and written test. The result of this research showed that the students got good level with the average score 73.28 in reading comprehension, and in writing the students got good level with the average score 76.12. The result of this research proved that there is a positive correlation between reading comprehension and writing ability on recount texts. The rxy distribution of coefficient correlation is 0.8. It means that the correlation was in a high level. So, Ha (alternative hypothesis) of this research is accepted, and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Is there any difference between students’ reading and writing score? So, the researcher try to find out students’ reading and writing score and their correlation. Finally, the researcher suggests for the teacher, they should have some efforts to develop the students’ motivation and encourage them to practice their reading comprehension and writing ability in recount texts.Key words: Correlation, Reading Comprehension, Writing Ability, Recount Texts

Abstract

Abstract: This study seeks to search the types of code mixing and the dominant of code mixing which are often used the television program in Master Chef Indonesia Season 5. In this study research, descriptive analysis and documentation method were applied. The finding discovers that the types of code mixing which had been observed in the television program are the intra- sentential code mixing 89%, intra-lexical code mixing 11%, and involving a change pronunciation 0% in Master Chef Indonesia Season 5.Keywords: Analysis, Code-Mixing, Television program, Master Chef Indonesia Season 5

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed to analyse the English receptive skills through the TOEFL score map of the English Study Program Students FKIP Universitas Riau. This research was descriptive quantitative research, with 95 students as the sample. This research used students TOEFL scores that the researcher got from UPT Bahasa Universitas Riau. Analysing students’ TOEFL scores showed that only 55,7% of students had passed the test and students classified as advanced level only 50,5%. Students’ receptive skills, either who passed or failed the TOEFL test, still faced difficulties answering the listening comprehension section questions, especially about short conversations and mini-talks. There is an imbalance in the students’ receptive skills because the students can understand had better in the reading comprehension section than in the listening comprehension section.Key Words: Analysis, Receptive Skills, TOEFL score
