Abstract

Lexical ambiguity where a single word licenses multiple meanings can obscure interpretation in Mandarin news, especially in brief, information-dense crime reporting; however, empirical descriptions of how ambiguity is realized and triggered in social-crime news discourse remain limited. Addressing this gap, this study investigates lexical ambiguity in social crime issues news published in the April 2025 edition of the Mandarin-language newspaper 《国际日报》 (Guójì Rìbào), with three objectives: (1) to classify the types of lexical ambiguity, (2) to identify factors that cause ambiguity, and (3) to explicate the lexical meanings generated in context. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the data were collected through document analysis of crime news texts and were examined by (i) isolating ambiguous lexical items, (ii) assigning ambiguity types based on Ullmann’s framework, (iii) tracing ambiguity triggers using Hurford and Heasley’s factors, and (iv) interpreting meanings through contextual, co-textual, and idiomatic cues. The analysis yielded 68 instances of lexical ambiguity, dominated by polysemy (58 cases), followed by homograph (9) and homophone (1), with no homonym cases identified. Two causal patterns were observed: unclear reference (5 cases) and ambiguous phrase/sentence structure (63 cases), indicating that ambiguity is more often driven by condensed journalistic constructions than by referential uncertainty alone. Overall, the ambiguities produced literal, contextual, and idiomatic meaning alternatives, implying that accurate comprehension of Mandarin crime news relies heavily on contextual anchoring and syntactic parsing; these findings support the need for clearer referential specification in news writing and for targeted instruction on disambiguation strategies in Mandarin reading.

Abstract

Abstract

Highlight: Moyamoya disease is one of the causes of stroke in children Moyamoya disease typically involves anterior circulation Posterior circulation may also be involved in certain cases of Moyamoya disease ABSTRACT Introduction: Ischemic stroke is frequently observed in adults but may also occur in children. Moyamoya disease (MMD) is one of the causes of ischemic stroke in children. MMD is a progressive steno-occlusive large-vessel cerebral arteriopathy. MMD was initially defined as changes in the carotid artery with an abnormal vascular network, however, the changes were also noted in posterior circulation. Case: We reported the case of a 13-year-old male with right-sided weakness persisting for over 3 years. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed cortical infarction in the left parietal lobe. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) confirmed moyamoya disease by revealing total occlusion of the bilateral terminal internal carotid artery and bilateral posterior cerebral artery, accompanied  by a puff of smoke appearance. We treated this patient with antiplatelet therapy for secondary stroke prevention. Conclusion: MMD is one of the conditions that can cause ischemic stroke in children. The posterior circulation is another possible site of MMD manifestation, but it is mostly found in cerebral anterior circulation.

Abstract

This study ivestigates the use of persuasive techniques in Chinese President Xi Jinping’s speeches delivered to promote the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).  This study aims to identify the forms of persuasion employed and to understand how Xi Jinping constructs his image and influences his audience to accept the BRI concept consciously and without resistance. The study is based on the view that a speech is a persuasive discourse requiring careful selection of language, techniques, and communication strategies to ensure that the message is received in line with the audience’s values and moral beliefs. The analysis of the speech data reveals 119 instances of persuasion, classified into six types of techniques: rationalization, identification, suggestion, conformity, compensation, and projection. Rationalization is used to build logical justification for the BRI concept; identification emphasizes shared viewpoints between the speaker and the audience;  suggestion functions to persuade through the emotional use of imperative diction ; conformity creates a sense of equality and togetherness; compensation highlights transformation toward a better condition; while projection is employed to position China as a positive and open actor, subtly shifting negative impressions toward others. The findings indicate that Xi Jinping strategically employs language and persuasive techniques to deliver political and economic messages within a framework of humanistic, harmonious, and low-conflict communication. These techniques strengthen China’s image as an inclusive global leader that promotes shared benefits through the BRI program.

Abstract

The transformation of Islamic higher education institutions in Indonesia has become increasingly urgent as newly established universities face growing pressures to achieve academic excellence, strengthen governance, and enhance global competitiveness while maintaining their religious and cultural identity. Despite this urgency, empirical studies examining how value-based transformational management operates in emerging Islamic universities remain limited, particularly within Nahdlatul Ulama (NU)-affiliated institutions, such as Universitas Ma’arif Lampung (UMALA). This study investigates transformational management practices at UMALA, a newly established Islamic university, by examining how strategic leadership, internal quality assurance, cultural integration, and international collaboration function as interrelated pillars of institutional transformation. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with university leaders and academic staff, document analysis of strategic plans, quality assurance reports, and cooperation agreements, as well as participant observation of institutional activities. The findings reveal that UMALA’s strategic leadership is deeply grounded in NU values of tawassuth (moderation), tasamuh (tolerance), and tawazun (balance), which shape participatory governance and ethical decision-making. The implementation of a digitally supported Internal Quality Assurance System (SPMI) has strengthened academic accountability, improved accreditation outcomes, and fostered a research-oriented culture. Cultural integration is systematically embedded in the curriculum and campus life, reinforcing institutional identity while supporting modernization. Furthermore, sustained national and international collaborations have expanded UMALA’s academic visibility and contributed to its regional and global engagement. This study highlights the need for developing context-sensitive, value-based management models in Islamic higher education. It contributes to the discussion on how faith-based universities can achieve sustainable academic excellence and global relevance without compromising cultural authenticity.

Abstract

The development of digital marketing through social media, particularly the TikTok Affiliate program, has created new entrepreneurial opportunities for Generation Z; however, it still faces challenges in terms of innovation and the implementation of Islamic business ethics. This study aims to analyze the influence of entrepreneurship education on social media marketing, both directly and through the mediating roles of innovation and Islamic business ethics. This research employs a quantitative explanatory approach using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Data were collected through closed-ended questionnaires from 250 Generation Z respondents aged 18–27 years who are active as TikTok Affiliates, and selected using purposive sampling. The findings indicate that entrepreneurship education has a positive and significant effect on innovation, Islamic business ethics, and social media marketing. In addition, innovation and Islamic business ethics are proven to act as mediating variables. These results emphasize the importance of integrating entrepreneurship education, innovation, and Islamic business ethics in developing digital marketing strategies that are effective, ethical, and sustainable.

Abstract

This study aims to explore an effective educational supervision approach in the context of education in Indonesia, taking into account the influence of religious and cultural values. The background of this study is based on the importance of the role of supervisors in supporting teachers to achieve the educational goals that have been set. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach, where data is collected through observation and interviews with educators as key informants. The findings of the study indicate that a collaborative and non-directive supervision approach is more effective in improving the quality of teaching, compared to a directive approach. In addition, social interaction between supervisors and teachers has been shown to be important in building better understanding and practice. The implications of this study emphasize the need for training for supervisors to develop skills in providing constructive feedback and creating a supportive working atmosphere. Thus, this study contributes to the development of better educational supervision practices, which can improve the quality of education in schools.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the managerial implementation of the Qur’an memorization (tahfiz) program in maintaining students’ memorization consistency at SMAN 2 Bandar Lampung using the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, Product) model. This research employed a qualitative evaluative approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings indicate that the program is relevant to strengthening students’ religious character, although the objectives have not been formulated in measurable terms. The program is supported by adequate resources; however, limitations remain in curriculum structure, facilities, and funding. The implementation process has been carried out, yet monitoring, coordination, and motivational reinforcement are not optimal. The program has a positive impact on students’ memorization achievement and religious attitudes, although memorization consistency has not been fully sustained. Strengthening managerial aspects is essential to ensure program sustainability.
