Abstract

Coal bottom ash and cattle manure can be used as soil ameliorant. The application of coal bottom ash and cattle manure can improve the soil chemical properties, such as pH and the amounts of available nutrients in soil. The objective of the study was to understand the effect of coal bottom ash and cow manure application on soil chemical properties and heavy metal contents in soil and mustard (Brassica juncea).  A pot experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, including three treatment factors, i.e. age of coal bottom ash (fresh, 4 months and 2 years), dose of coal bottom ash, i.e. 0, 40 and 80 Mg ha-1, and dose of cattle manure, i.e. 0 and 10 Mg ha-1. The results show that the application of coal bottom ash and cattle manure increased the pH and the amounts of total-N, available-P and exchangeable cations (K, Ca and Mg) of the soil. The application of coal bottom ash increased the amounts of Pb, Cd and Co in the soil, but did not increase the amounts of Pb and Co in mustard, while the application of cattle manure increased the amount of Cd both in soil and mustard.  Keywords: Coal bottom ash, cattle manure, heavy metal, mustard, soil ameliorant

Abstract

The use of organic materials aimed at reducing the dependence on inputs such as chemical fertilizers can contribute to sustainability and improving the low N fertilizer efficiency of rice plants in paddy soils.  Therefore, better understanding of N transformation in flooded soils, particularly the microbial transformation of N-organic amendments to plant-available N and gaseous N forms is needed for most efficient use of soil and organic materials N, for determining the potential of denitrification and for aiding in the selection of N management practices for sustainable agriculture.  The experiments were conducted in the laboratory and glasshouse of Soil Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Bogor Agricultural University.  An incubation experiment was conducted in the laboratory at room temperature during 120 d to analyze the mineralization-immobilization patterns in flooded soils amended with rice straw, rice straw composts 4 mo and 8 mo and their combinations with urea.  The first time of soil flooding, mineral N (N-NH4+ and N-NO3-) concentrations in all of the amended soils sharply decreased and those gradually increase since 7 d of incubation.  It might be due to the reduction of N-NO3- to N2O and N2, and immobilization.  This data was consistent with the data of N2O emission derived from pot experiment.  The high emission of N2O was observed at the first time of soil flooding of the amended soils, and the soils added rice straw showed the largest N2O emission than the other treatments. It might be due to the change of soil condition from aerobic to anaerobic condition, and the higher decomposable C as energy source for denitrifyer contained in rice straw.  Regardless the organic materials added to soils, the longer anaerobic condition, nitrification sharply decreased, so that nitrate availability limits denitrifications.decreased, so that nitrate availability limits denitrifications.

Abstract

Coal ash and humic substances can be used as soil ameliorant in the reclamation of formerly mined land. Due to its high pH and nutrients content, coal ash can be used to improve the chemical properties of the soil, such as increasing of pH, and increasing the levels of nutrients availability in the soil. Humic substances may also be used to complement, as they can increase the release of nutrients from the coal ash. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the influence of coal ash and humic substances on soil chemical characteristics, nutrient absorption, and plant growth. This study was conducted in two locations - in a nursery area, involving two treatment factors: coal ash at different dosages (0, 200, and 400 g polybag-1), and humic material also at varying dosages (0, 0.04, and 0.08 g C polybag-1); and in a post-mining field using similar treatments: coal ash dosage (0, 2.5, and 5.0 kg planting-1 hole) and humic material dosage (0, 0.56, and 1.12 g C planting hole-1). The results showed that coal ash and humic materials significantly increased the soil pH, available P, and exchangeable K, Ca and Mg. Coal ash also contained a number of heavy metals but in quantities that are far below the limits set by both Indonesian Government Regulation and the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The above soil amelioration effects mean that. applicaton of coal ash and humic substances can significantly increase the growth of Jabon trees in the reclaimed post-mining land.[How to Cite: Ade MO, Sudarsono, Iskandar and DT Suryaningtyas. 2014. Abstract

Paddy soil has different morphology and pedogenic characteristics compared to dry land, due to the influence of inundation during several months in a year. Puddling and drying that occurs in turns (redox cycle) in paddy soil can lead to the formation of concretions or rusty Fe and Mn. The main purpose of this study was to understand the changing of the morphological and chemical properties as a result of changing of the dry land to paddy soil. Besides, the study also aimed to understand plow pan layer formation in Podsolic, Latosol, Regosol, and Andosol soil type. Results showed that content of soil density (bulk density) of dry land ranged from 0.5  to 1.0, while paddy soil is 0.8 to 1.0 (g cm-3).  Bulk density values in all four types of soils increased after the changing. Observation also demonstrated that severity levels of paddy soil is higher than dry land, especially in the second and third soil layers or under the surface of soils. Acidity of dry land was likely to be higher than paddy soil. There were no significant differences in nutrient such as C-organic, P and N. Meanwhile, using dithionite as solvent, paddy soil has higher Fe, Mn, and Al content than that of dry land, and remain the same when extracted with pyrophosphate and oxalate. From the four types of soil observed, the paddy soil showed formation of plow pan layer. This was shown by the soil severity level higher than the topsoil or other layers. Paddy soil had unique properties due to redox reaction, thereby providing soil discoloration i.e darker due to high solubility of Fe, Mn, and Al.Keywords: Concretion of Fe and Mn, paddy soil, pedogenesis, plow pan layer [How to Cite: Kurniati, Sudarsono and Suwardi. 2016. Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of Pesantren Wahdah Islamiyah Luwu Timur in providing and implementing character-building programs at the Integrated Islamic Elementary School (SDIT) Insan Rabbani Malili. The research focuses primarily on the forms of collaboration between the pesantren and the school, the types of moral development programs implemented, and their impact on students' character formation. A qualitative research approach was employed, utilizing data collection techniques such as observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings indicated that Pesantren Wahdah Islamiyah played a strategic role as an active partner in moral education, particularly in curriculum development, teaching personnel, and regular religious activities such as halaqah (study circles), mentoring, and the cultivation of daily worship habits. These programs have positively contributed to developing students’ character, especially in discipline, responsibility, and social ethics. This study addresses a gap in the literature where limited research explores the direct, structured collaboration between pesantren and formal Islamic schools at the elementary level. Its novelty highlights the pesantren’s multi-dimensional role—conceptual, operational, and implementational—in shaping character education within a formal school context, offering a practical model for integrated Islamic education.

Abstract

Nutrient-use efficiency in oil palm is important for economic and environmental reasons. This research aimed to identify biomarkers to discriminate between tolerant and susceptible oil palms to potassium (K) and nitrogen (N) deficiency. A screening of oil palm materials for N or K use efficiency was conducted using an omission trial experiment, where only targeted nutrient was applied as treatment, while all other nutrients were applied as recommended. The treatment was performed in the main nursery for ten months to identify progenies with contrasting traits. Metabolite analysis was performed to identify specific metabolites as biomarkers for N-efficient and K-efficient palms. Samples taken from the roots of the contrasting progenies were treated with liquid nitrogen prior to grinding into a powder for liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) analysis. The LC-HRMS analysis showed 277 metabolites from K and N treatments after data trimming, which were then analysed in MetaboAnalyst 6.0 for biomarker identification. The results showed that some metabolites were statistically significant. Metabolites identified in more than one analysis have a higher likelihood of being considered as biomarkers. In this experiment, we compared PLS-DA, sPLS-DA, and Random Forest. However, some identified metabolites were not to occur naturally in the treatment palms. Some amino acids and antioxidants were promising biomarkers to differentiate the N-deficiency-tolerant and K-deficiency-tolerant palms. Thus, the biomarkers facilitate the breeding scheme to create a nutrient-efficient palm planting material.

Abstract

Water is one of the important factors in fulfilling human needs. The existence of water on earth is very abundant but the quality doesn't meet the standards. The system value of a DWTP can be seen from 3 aspects, quality, quantity, and continuity of water produced. Dry season, increasing population, and the age of DWTP are things that will be faced in maintaining the three aspects of value. Seeing the several conditions experienced by PDAM Tirta Wijaya, it is necessary to conduct an evaluation to determine the performance of each unit, the quality of raw and production water, the fulfillment of water needs, the operation during the dry season and the optimization that needs to be done.  The method used is direct observation to DWTP Kesugihan. The results of the evaluation of DWTP Kesugihan are that the flocculation, sedimentation and filtration units is not comply with SNI 2774-2008, the water demand in 2029 is 1170.7 L/second.  From this study it can be concluded that the performance of the DWTP unit is categorized as quite good, the quality of raw water is still worthy of consideration, the quality of production water has met the quality standards, DWTP Kesugihan has not been able to fulfill water needs in 2029 as much as 80% coverage, there is no operational standard during the dry season. Optimization of DWTP Kesugihan by increasing the height of the filtration unit to 6.5 m, the nozzle diameter to 0.05 m and the number of nozzles to 500 and making SOPs for the dry season
