Abstract

Intercultural understanding plays a vital role in language education. Having a good cultural or intercultural awareness can help students create good relationships and successful communication. This study aimed at explaining the use of the intercultural approach in second language acquisition to improve the students’ communicative competence in eighth grade. This study used the qualitative approach with narrative study. The data were taken from classroom observation, teacher and students interviews, and document analysis. Data were analyzed using five steps according to Miles and Huberman (1992) and Merriam (1992), namely transcribing the data, coding the data, reducing the data, displaying the data, and drawing a conclusion. This study found that the use of an intercultural approach concerned on its three components, such as knowledge, attitude, and behavior. Those components are provided to the students in the special meeting, but they could also be included in the materials listed in the syllabus. There were four stages of intercultural approach, namely warm-up, communicative activities, product, and discussion. Classroom activities in using intercultural approach were brainstorming, pair or work group, presentation, discussion, and reflection. In addition, the procedures of intercultural approach were exploring local culture, exploring language learning materials, exploring the traditional media and arts through English, exploring IT through English, cultural informants, and face-to-face intercultural communication. The findings of this study are expected to provide additional information regarding the proper use of intercultural approach in second language acquisition to improve the students’ communicative competence in eighth grade.

Politeness is one of the communication strategies used to maintain the interlocutors’ feeling so the conversation flows in harmony. In society, interview and talk show becomes popular programs in acquiring information. As the primary source, the data were taken from the interview’s transcript. A descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the positive politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson. The findings show that there are 13 types of positive politeness sub-strategies performed by four international guest speakers. Those are noticing (attending to the hearer), exaggerating, intensifying, using in-group identity markers, seeking agreement, avoiding disagreement, presupposing/asserting/raising common ground, joking, asserting/presupposing speaker knowledge, offering/promising, include both speaker and hearer in the activity, give/ask for a reason, give gifts (sympathy, good, understanding). The highest number of sub-strategy was presupposing/asserting/raising common ground which occurred 19 times. This study is expected to contribute in English language teaching specifically in comprehending cross-cultural understanding (CCU) in relation to Indonesian context.

Abstract

This study addresses the critical need for character-based English reading materials tailored to the unique educational context of Integrated Islamic Junior High Schools (SMPIT). SMPIT's distinct curriculum incorporates the 10-Muwashafat character foundation, which aligns with broader national values encapsulated in the Pancasila student profile. Despite the importance of these character values, existing English reading materials often fail to adequately integrate them, posing a challenge for effective character education. This research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining Research and Development (R&D) methodology to develop a model of reading materials that integrates the 10 Muwashafat characters and the Pancasila student profile, aimed at supporting character formation in English language learning at SMPIT. Additionally, an experimental method is utilized to assess the model's effectiveness. Through the mixed-methods design, the study conducted an in-depth analysis of current learning materials to identify gaps in the integration of character values. Data were collected using interviews, observations, tests, and questionnaires, involving teachers, students, and education experts. Based on these findings, a new model of reading materials was designed, integrating both 10 Muwashafat and Pancasila values. The model underwent expert validation and field testing at SMPIT, followed by revisions to enhance its effectiveness based on the results. The results demonstrate that the developed reading materials significantly improve the integration of character education in English learning, aligning with the school's values and supporting students' holistic development. This study contributes to the field of educational material development by providing a framework for incorporating character education into language learning, addressing both religious and national educational goals.

Abstract

The present study analyses the impoliteness of criticism over social status and distance, incorporating the concept of "levels of imposition." Criticism as a fundamental speech act is commonly used by people in the modern era, either in the digital world or the real world. It usually contains impoliteness if it embodies negative behavior, conveying criticism. This study belonged to an interlanguage pragmatics study and used forty participants from English language learners having Javanese backgrounds. It also applied the role play technique to take data to be analyzed using mixed method analysis. The data showed that the criticizer performed various impoliteness strategies in criticism, considering familiar and unfamiliar relationships in different social status levels. They mainly performed bald-on-record impoliteness and adhered to other strategies such as negative, positive, and mock politeness. Besides that, delivering criticism in high intonation was also perceived as a part of impoliteness. Therefore, it suggested conducting another research concerning paralinguistics and impoliteness in various communication contexts.
