Abstract

Intercultural communication has become a central component of Maritime English (ME) due to the increasing multicultural composition of ship crews and the safety-critical nature of communication at sea. While the Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) provide a foundational linguistic framework, effective shipboard interaction requires broader intercultural communicative competence (ICC), including pragmatic adaptation, negotiation strategies, and the ability to interpret diverse accents and hierarchical norms. Existing literature notes limitations in traditional ME instruction, particularly in seafarer-supplying nations such as Indonesia, where teaching remains focused on grammar and phrase memorization with limited exposure to authentic intercultural interactions. This study investigates the ICC of Indonesian cadets through a convergent mixed-methods design integrating an adapted Intercultural Sensitivity Scale, simulation-based communicative tasks, and semi-structured interviews. A total of 120 cadets participated in routine and emergency maritime simulations designed to elicit pragmatic strategies, clarity, and communication repair behaviours. Quantitative findings reveal significant post-simulation improvements in interaction confidence, attentiveness, and engagement. Qualitative analysis further identifies recurring challenges in pragmatic appropriateness, accent intelligibility, and communication anxiety, yet demonstrates the role of simulation-enhanced training in fostering communicative adaptability and reducing hesitation in multicultural scenarios. The study contributes empirical evidence on ICC development in maritime education and highlights the need to integrate intercultural and simulation-based pedagogy into Maritime English curricula. Recommendations are offered for curriculum designers, instructors, and policymakers to strengthen cadets’ readiness for multinational shipboard environments and align training with contemporary safety and communication demands in global shipping.

Abstract

AbstrakDalam kehidupan air merupakan komponen yang sangat penting. Dilain sisi air juga dapat mengakibatkan sebuat bencana yang sangat besar di kehidupan manusia. Air dapat mengakibatkan bencana banjir, air dapat mengakibatkan bencana tanah longsor dan banyak yang lain. Fokus pada bencana banjir diakibatkan salah satunya adalah sungai tidak dapat menampung air yang ada dan debit air yang melewati sungai sangat besar. Untuk meprediksi banjir dapat menggunakan salah satu parameter yaitu debit air yang ada dalam suangi. Penelitian ini akan fakus pada Optimasi Pengukuran Aliran Air Menggunakan Sensor Water Flow HF-S201 Berbasis Internet Of Things. Yang nantinya diharpakan dapat di implementasikan untuk memprediksi bencana banjir. Dalam pengujian yang di lakukan didapatkan keakuratan pengukuran aliran air dengan menggunakan Sensor Water Flow HF-S201 mencapai 99% dalam pengaujian dalam skala lab.=============AbstractIn water life is a very important component. On the other hand, water can also cause a very big disaster in human life. Water can cause floods, water can cause landslides and many others. One of the focus on flood disasters is that the river cannot accommodate existing water and the water discharge that passes through the river is very large. To predict floods, one parameter can be used, namely the discharge of water in the reservoir. This research will focus on Optimizing Water Flow Measurement Using Water Flow Sensor HF-S201 Based on Internet Of Things. Which is expected to be implemented to predict flood disasters. In the tests carried out, the accuracy of water flow measurements using the HF-S201 Water Flow Sensor reaches 99% in testing on a lab scale.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of vowel-reduction dubbing practice on the Word Error Rate (WER) of automatic speech recognition (ASR)-generated captions in Zoom-based English presentations. Employing a convergent mixed-methods design, the research examines how misarticulation related to vowel reduction—particularly the realization of schwa—shapes ASR performance and caption accuracy. Twentyseven English teacher candidates completed structured dubbing tasks followed by ASR transcription analysis using Zoom’s auto-captioning system. WER was calculated using standard computational formulae, and both quantitative data (percentages, accuracy ratios, and error rates) and qualitative data (error types, substitution patterns, and prosodic deviations) were systematically analyzed. Results indicate that substitution errors remained the most dominant ASR error type, especially when vowel reduction occurred without adequate prosodic support. A substantial improvement was observed following the intervention: the average WER decreased by approximately 52% (from 27.4% to 13.2%), demonstrating a strong effect of targeted dubbing practice on caption intelligibility. Participants who maintained clearer vowel quality and rhythmic timing achieved consistently lower WER scores, while those applying excessive or inconsistent vowel reduction produced higher rates of substitution and deletion errors. The study highlights the pedagogical value of integrating ASR-based feedback with dubbing activities to strengthen learners’ pronunciation intelligibility and schwa awareness. It further underscores the importance of TPACK-informed instruction that cultivates learners’ sensitivity to both human comprehensibility and machine recognition. Overall, these findings contribute to ongoing developments in pronunciation pedagogy by bridging technology-enhanced learning with EFL teacher education.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic transformed undergraduate ELT research practices in higher education. This study investigates shifts in research topics, methodologies, technology use, and ethical considerations in undergraduate ELT research at an Islamic university in Indonesia during and beyond the pandemic. This study employed a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through open-ended online questionnaires involving seven student researchers and five lecturer supervisors, as well as document analysis of 41 undergraduate thesis abstracts selected purposively from 2020–2022, and were analyzed using thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s six-phase framework. Findings indicate a notable rise in discourse-based and technology-mediated research topics, with qualitative approaches dominating methodological choices.  Digital tools, such as online questionnaires, virtual interviews, and electronic academic databases, played a central role in data collection. However, students also encountered challenges, including access constraints, ethical requirements, and technological and communication limitations. The study highlights how crisis-driven adaptations, particularly digital research literacy, flexible methodological decision-making, and strengthened ethical awareness, constitute valuable lessons for sustaining and improving undergraduate research supervision in post-pandemic contexts. Recommendations are offered for integrating blended research training, ethical digital research competencies, and culturally grounded supervision strategies within Islamic higher-education ELT programs.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of interdisciplinary learning in English language instruction on procedural texts among sixth-grade students at SD Negeri 2 Kentengsari and to explore its impact on students’ understanding and classroom engagement. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, involving sixth-grade teachers and students as the research participants. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The credibility of the findings was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The results indicate that integrating English with Fine Arts created a more contextual, meaningful, and engaging learning environment. Students not only developed a better understanding of procedural text structures but also applied their knowledge through practical classroom activities. The interdisciplinary approach also enhanced students’ participation, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and artistic expression throughout the learning process. Furthermore, the teacher’s role as a facilitator was essential in guiding learning activities effectively. These findings suggest that interdisciplinary learning is an innovative instructional approach that supports holistic competency development and promotes meaningful learning experiences at the elementary school level.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence in higher education has significantly transformed English language teaching and learning processes. This study investigates the integration of humanizing pedagogy into AI-supported learning environments, particularly via platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Bing AI/Copilot, to enhance university students' speaking outcomes. Using a cross-sectional survey design involving 54 university students from Elementary School Teacher Education, Accounting, and English Education programs, data were collected via a structured questionnaire during May 2025 and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings reveal that while artificial intelligence provides efficient feedback and structured practice, the human element remains essential for creating an authentic and supportive instructional atmosphere. Students who perceived psychological benefits from AI use showed the strongest intention to continue using these tools (β = 0.368, p < 0.01), followed by learning effectiveness (β = 0.289) and technology usability (β = 0.241), with the model accounting for 61.4% of variance in adoption intention. This research provides practical implications for curriculum designers to incorporate humanized artificial intelligence strategies into English education programs to ensure more effective and empathetic classroom instruction.

Abstract

Teachers' and students' ability to understand and apply principles of assessment, referred to as assessment literacy (AL), is central to sustaining high-quality teaching and learning. Despite growing recognition of AL's importance in L2 writing instruction, research directly measuring its impact on students' writing development remains limited. This study examines the influence of teachers’ writing assessment literacy (WAL) on students’ learning experiences in advanced L2 writing courses. Drawing on a multi-phase approach, a total of 24 teachers were first assessed using a writing assessment literacy test and then divided into proficiency groups. A total of 92 students (distributed across four groups of 18, 24, 26, and 24 participants, each corresponding to a teacher proficiency group) had their perceptions of assessment practices collected using the Assessment Experience Questionnaire and analyzed alongside the teacher groups. Surprisingly, the results showed that students of teachers with lower levels of writing assessment literacy (WAL) expressed significantly more positive views about assessment practices and educational experiences than those whose teachers had higher WAL levels. These findings challenge the prevailing assumption that greater teacher expertise inevitably leads to better student outcomes and highlight the complexity of the WAL–student learning relationship. The study highlights the need for context-sensitive approaches to professional development and suggests that both standardized and differentiated assessment strategies can provide significant benefits for diverse learners.

Abstract

Due to the increasing need for effective communication skills in both academic and professional settings, EFL learners require competencies that extend beyond mere linguistic proficiency. This research investigates the impact of multimodal communication strategies (verbal and non-verbal) on students' presentation skills, focus on five primary modes: linguistic, visual, aural, gestural, and spatial. This study employed a concurrent embedded mixed-methods design involving 17 fourth-semester EFL students at a public university in Semarang, Indonesia. Data were collected using questionnaires, classroom observations, and video recordings. Questionnaire responses (N = 17) were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation (ρ), which is appropriate for ordinal Likert-scale data and does not assume normality or linearity. The analysis revealed significant positive associations between the use of multimodal strategies and improvements in presentation quality, with linguistic (ρ = 0.88) and spatial (ρ = 0.84) strategies showing the strongest effects. All modes contributed positively, and effect sizes are reported with 95% confidence intervals. Qualitative findings corroborated these results, indicating that students who integrated modes exhibited enhanced organization, clarity, and confidence. The non-verbal strategy notably compensated for limited language fluency, thereby enhancing delivery and engagement. The findings underscore the importance of incorporating multimodal training into EFL curricula. Educators should evaluate not only verbal accuracy but also visual, vocal, and spatial components to enhance learners' overall communicative competence.

Abstract

The integration of religious ethics within English as a Foreign Language (EFL) remains underdeveloped, often sidelined by an epistemological dichotomy between general and religious disciplines. This study investigates how the ethical dimensions of K.H. Hasyim Asy’ari’s classical text, Adabul ‘Alim wal Muta’allim, are integrated into the professional identity and pedagogical practices of English teachers at an Indonesian Islamic university. Employing a narrative inquiry, data were collected through in-depth interviews with five English teachers and observations. Findings indicate that the integration of adab is manifested in (1) intention and sincerity as part of teacher identity, (2) teachers as exemplary models of Islamic ethics, (3) Islamic ethics as non-discrimination and fairness pedagogy, and (4) harmonious relationships to foster an inclusive learning environment. Practical manifestations of adab integration in the teaching process include fair assessment practices and extraordinary patience with students' grammatical and pronunciation errors. This study contributes to Islamic education by providing a clear framework to bridge knowledge gaps and eliminate scientific dichotomies between secular language teaching and religious ethics, and offering an in-depth model for a holistic teacher identity. This study offers a model for updating the curriculum to integrate strong language skills with the development of religious ethics in teacher professional identity construction and pedagogical practices.

Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of the implementation of Team-Based Learning (TBL) combined with technology, in this case is the Canvas Learning Management System (Canvas LMS), to improve reading skills and critical thinking skills among students from English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. Using a quasi-experimental design, the study involved 112 third-semester students in Critical Reading courses. The sample was determined through cluster random sampling, which consisted of a C class that consisted of 28 students of the English Department in the State Islamic Institution of Ponorogo. Pre-test and post-test were administered, and data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test. The findings showed a significant enhancement in reading skills due to the integration of Canvas LMS into TBL (sig = 0.000 < 0.005), as evidenced by the increased scores on the mean scores of pre-test and post-test from 62.57 to 80.61. Students also showed an increase in their critical thinking skills. The implications of these findings provide further insights into the effectiveness of integrating TBL with the use of technology to improve academic reading and critical thinking in EFL settings and a suggested strategy for developing such essential skills in university contexts.
