Abstract

The purpose of this study was to look into how eighth-grade students at MTs. Negeri 2 Ogan Komering Ilir's cooperative learning and learning motivation strategies affected their reading comprehension skills. The study investigated the effects of two independent variables—methods and learning motivation—using a 2x2 factorial design (with two levels: high motivation and low motivation). Four different groups were created out of the participants: class without treatment-low motivation, class without treatment-high motivation, cooperative learning-low motivation, and cooperative learning-high motivation. Tests and questionnaires were used to gather information about the participants' reading comprehension abilities. The results showed that students with varying levels of learning desire, as well as those who participated in cooperative learning and attended class without receiving any instruction, had differing reading comprehension abilities. Nevertheless, it was not discovered that there was a statistically significant interaction between cooperative learning and learning motivation. These findings imply that although learning motivation and cooperative learning both have an independent impact on reading comprehension, their combined effect could not have a substantial effect on students' performance in this specific situation. The results advance our knowledge of how technique and student motivation interact to improve reading comprehension abilities.

The writer found that the students’ average scores in the pre-test was 59.5 and in the post-test was 76.7. The scores showed that the average scores in the post-test was higher than the students’ average in the pre-test. The writer also found that the result of the matched t-test calculation between the students’ scores in post-test and pre-test was 13.983. The scores were higher than the critical value of the t-table with 5% (0.05) significance level in one-tailed testing 1.695. It means that video media could improve the students’ listening skills.

Abstract

This research evaluates the effectiveness of a topical approach in teaching recount text writing to eighth-grade students at State of Junior High School number 42 of Palembang. Employing a quantitative pre-experimental design, the study sampled 34 students who underwent pre-tests and post-tests to measure their writing abilities. The findings indicated a significant improvement in the students' writing skills after using the topical approach. The average pre-test score was 52.5, with scores ranging from 31 to 68.5. After the intervention, the average post-test score increased to 75.7, with a range from 53 to 92.5. The t-test analysis revealed a t-obtained value of 13.31, surpassing the critical value of 1.692, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis. During the pre-test, students struggled with idea generation and grammatical accuracy. Post-intervention results showed that students became more adept at generating ideas, using correct grammar, narrating experiences, and expanding their vocabulary. Thus, the topical approach proved effective in enhancing recount text writing skills among the eighth grade State of Junior High School Number 42 of Palembang.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of implementing Project-Based Learning (PBL) and students' motivation on improving writing skills. The research adopts a factorial design method, incorporating both a control and an experimental group. The sample consists of two randomly selected classes, with one group applying the PBL method and the other serving as a control group without any specific instructional method. Data collection was conducted through writing tests and student motivation questionnaires. The analysis reveals a significant difference in students’ ability to write explanation texts between those taught using the PBL approach and those who did not receive structured instructional methods. Furthermore, students’ learning motivation positively influences their writing skills. Those with higher motivation demonstrated greater improvements in writing proficiency compared to students with lower motivation levels. Based on these findings, this study concludes that implementing Project-Based Learning can effectively enhance students’ writing skills, particularly in explanation texts, when accompanied by strong learning motivation. As a result, it is recommended that teachers incorporate the PBL method into writing instruction and actively foster student motivation to maximize learning outcomes.
THE USE OF CODE MIXING IN ELT: A CASE STUDY Habso, Putri Ayu; Tahrun; Mulyadi

Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of code mixing in English Language Teaching (ELT) at SMP IT Al Hasanah Prabumulih, focusing on the types, frequency, and pedagogical relevance of its use in the classroom. Conducted between December 2023 and June 2024, this qualitative descriptive research utilized classroom observations and interviews to collect data. The findings indicate that both teachers and students employed three main types of code mixing: intra-sentential, intra-lexical, and phonological variation. Among these, intra-sentential code mixing emerged as the most dominant. Teachers perceived code mixing as an effective instructional strategy that supports vocabulary acquisition and facilitates learner comprehension, especially in a multilingual setting. Theoretically, this study enhances the understanding of code mixing as a communicative and instructional resource within ELT contexts. Practically, the findings offer valuable implications for educators, suggesting that code mixing, when used strategically, can bridge linguistic gaps and increase classroom engagement. Future research is recommended to further examine the long-term effects of code mixing on language proficiency and to explore its application in other educational settings. Additionally, comparative studies across different school levels and regions may yield broader insights into the pedagogical potential of code mixing.
