Abstract

This study investigates the use of figurative language in Bruno Mars' song lyrics, focusing on how various figurative expressions enhance emotional depth and convey meaning in his works. Guided by Knickerbocker and Reninger's framework, this study uses a qualitative descriptive approach supported by content analysis to identify, classify, and interpret figurative expressions in four Bruno Mars albums: Doo-Wops and Hooligans, Unorthodox Jukebox, 24K Magic, and An Evening with Silk Sonic. The analysis is conducted in four systematic stages: identification, categorization, interpretation, and contextual analysis of the figurative language found in the lyrics. This study is motivated by the growing recognition that song lyrics, particularly in popular music, function as a form of poetic and cultural expression. Bruno Mars was chosen as the focus of the analysis because of his global influence, genre diversity, and the sophistication of his lyrics, which often involve the creative use of figurative language to express universal human experiences such as love, heartbreak, ambition, and joy. The four albums were chosen to explore how the diversity of figurative language reflects his artistic evolution and emotional range throughout his career. The findings reveal eight distinct types of figurative language, with metaphor and hyperbole being the most dominant. These devices serve to intensify emotions, create vivid imagery, and accentuate expressive nuances in his songwriting, while personification, simile, irony, and symbolism add depth and aesthetic variety. The figurative language in Bruno Mars' lyrics serves as an artistic and communicative device that bridges literal meaning and emotional resonance. This study is expected to contribute to the fields of linguistics and stylistics by demonstrating how popular music integrates creative language to express complex emotions and cultural meanings. It also provides a methodological model for analyzing figurative language in various musical works. Furthermore, this research offers pedagogical value for non-native English speakers, helping them interpret English song lyrics more accurately and appreciate their figurative meanings, thereby preventing misinterpretation and enriching linguistic competence and cultural understanding.

Abstract

This study investigates translation procedures and pragmatic implications in the Indonesian subtitles of the film Ant-Man. Using Newmark's translation procedure framework and supported by the pragmatic theories of Austin et al., Searle, and Cutting, this study aims to identify the types of translation procedures applied, determine the most dominant procedures, and analyze how they preserve meaning in context. Employing descriptive qualitative methods with content analysis, the dialogue data were coded and then interpreted through Newmark's translation procedure theory, Austin and Searle's speech acts theory, and Cutting's context classification theory.  114 subtitle sentences were examined, of which 75 were categorized as pragmatic utterances. The findings present that ten out of eighteen procedures were identified, with Modulation being the most dominant (42.11%), followed by Couplets/Triplets (22.81%) and Literal Translation (13.16%). Pragmatic analysis indicates that procedures such as Modulation, Couplets, Functional Equivalent, Cultural Equivalent, and Synonymy have played an important role in maintaining humor, sarcasm, idiomatic expressions, and cultural nuances ensuring that the communicative intent is conveyed effectively to the Indonesian audience. This study contribute to bridging the analysis of translation procedures and pragmatic interpretation in audiovisual translation in terms of variations in equivalent meanings based on context. Furthermore, practically, the findings of this study can be useful for translators or subtitlers to pay more attention to the equivalence of meaning, not just based on the literal meaning, to avoid audience confusion.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the contextual development of human resources (HR) in supporting public welfare during the era of digital transformation in Nabire Regency. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis involving stakeholders from government, education, and public communication sectors. The findings reveal that despite growing awareness of digitalization, key challenges persist, including limited digital literacy, inadequate technological infrastructure, and disparities in HR competencies. Contextual strategies—such as mobile training units, community-based outreach, and engagement of local leaders—have proven effective in reaching remote areas. The study underscores the need for inclusive policies and cross-sectoral collaboration to build a sustainable HR development ecosystem responsive to technological change. The research concludes that digital transformation can serve as a catalyst for public welfare if supported by competent and locally attuned human resources.

Abstract

As time progresses, many literary works have been adapted into films, including animated films that often present moral values. One animated film that portrays moral values is Grave of the Fireflies by Isao Takahata. This study aims to analyze the forms of moral responsibility expressed by the main characters in Grave of the Fireflies. The research employs a qualitative method, using dynamic structuralism theory that examines the interrelationships among the elements of the story as a whole through two types of analysis: intrinsic analysis (characterization of the main characters, plot and conflict) and extrinsic analysis (Japanese cultural values). Furthermore, the analysis is supported by moral responsibility theory to identify and describe the forms of moral responsibility portrayed by the main characters. The results revealed that the main characters moral responsibility in this film is divided into two main forms. The first is Protective and Practical Responsibility, reflected in Seita’s decision to care for and protect his younger sister, Setsuko. The second is Existential Moral Responsibility, evident in his decision to leave his aunt’s house and the moral consequences that arise from his actions. These two forms of responsibility highlight the strong influence of Japanese cultural values (bushidō and giri) that emphasize honor, loyalty, sacrifice, and moral obligation toward the family. These findings highlight that Grave of the Fireflies not only portrays the destructive impact of war but also presents a profound reflection on humanity and moral responsibility within the context of Japanese culture. Keywords: film, anime, moral responsibility, the main character.
