Abstract

Geometric thinking level and habits of mind were important hard and soft skills required of prospective mathematics teachers. The purpose of this study is to describe the van Hiele geometric thinking level and habits of mind of prospective mathematics teachers. The descriptive quantitative research method was used. There were 31 female and 17 male prospective mathematics teachers in the sample. The research instrument for measuring geometric level was derived from Usikin's (1982) van Hiele geometric thinking test and a habits of mind questionnaire. According to the findings of this study, prospective mathematics teachers' ability to think geometrically has progressed to the stage of analysis and informal deduction. Furthermore, male prospective mathematics teachers achieved the highest level of geometric thinking, known as rigor. Furthermore, both as a whole and in terms of indicators, prospective mathematics teachers' habits of mind fall into the strong category. Male prospective mathematics teachers have more positive habits of mind than female prospective mathematics teachers. The study's findings can help lecturers, particularly those in the mathematics education study program, determine students' hard and soft skills at the end of the year. Prospective mathematics teachers can also be assigned by institutions based on their geometric thinking and habits of mind.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate how the integration of technology, particularly games, in mathematics education serves as an innovation in mathematics learning. The focus of this research is on the integration of technology in mathematics education, particularly concerning the topic of algebra, specifically linear equations in one variable, using gamification media with the assistance of RPG Maker MV application. This research employs a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to understand the subjective meanings contained in individual experiences related to the use of gamification in a learning context. A total of 39 seventh-grade students and 2 educators from a public junior high school in Luwuk were selected as subjects for this study. The research utilized both test and non-test instruments. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, involving three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing. The results showed that the integration of technology, particularly the use of gamification in mathematics education, has received a positive response from students especially in the field of students' interest, collaboration, and motivation and serves as an innovation in mathematics learning. RPG games have great potential to be used as an interactive learning tools in the classroom because they contain various interesting features that support the psychological and cognitive development of students. Researchers are recommended to design a didactic design that integrate technology, ensuring that educational practices are both engaging and effective in enhancing students' learning experiences.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop an interactive e-module based on the RME approach, focusing on parallel lines and angles. The e-module was designed using a development studies approach with two main stages: preliminary and formative evaluation. These included self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one trials, small group trials, and field tests. Data were collected through validation sheets, student response questionnaires, pretests, and posttests. The e-module was deemed valid and practical, with average validation scores from experts and students of 4.4 and 4.89, respectively. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the e-module was measured using T-Test and N-Gain analysis, which showed a significant improvement of 38% in students' mathematical reasoning skills. The findings demonstrate that the RME-based interactive e-module is an effective teaching tool for enhancing mathematical reasoning skills, particularly on parallel lines and angles. This e-module provides an alternative solution for teachers to facilitate interactive, context-based, and independent learning, aligning with the demands of 21st-century education. Future research could explore integrating virtual laboratories or GeoGebra software into the e-module and applying it to other mathematical topics, such as angles in polygons

Abstract

The proportion has emerged as an important mathematical topic in high school because of its foundation in other mathematics topics. This study aims to identify the learning barriers of pre-service mathematics teachers (PMT) based on the material proportion and level of reasoning proportion. This study implemented Didactical Design Research (DDR) and used qualitative research methodologies within an interpretive paradigm. The research participants were 25 PMTs from a seventh-semester candidate teacher at a private college in Cianjur, Indonesia. The data collected from the test results and interviews were analyzed using procedures such as identification, clarification, reduction, and verification. We then present the findings in a narrative format. Langrall and Swafford categorized the results of written tests at the proportional-reasoning level. Based on the results, the PMT at the varied proportional level but at the nonproportional level 0 identified learning obstacles, which include ontogenetic obstacles, epistimology obstacles, and didactic obstacles. The results of this study are expected to be used as a basis for designing hypothetical learning for school mathematical research in future PMT.

Abstract

Many geometry problems at the university level, particularly in analytic geometry courses, tend to prioritize procedural tasks to foster deeper geometric thinking. This study aims to analyze and redesign existing geometry problems to enhance pre-service mathematics teachers' formal deductive reasoning and rigor in accordance with the Van Hiele model. Employing a case study approach, four geometric problems were analyzed in relation to their alignment with various levels of geometric thinking. The study involved a detailed examination of pre-service mathematics teachers’ responses and the structure of their problems to identify aspects that require improvement to better support higher-order thinking. The methodology included a content analysis of problem design and pre-service mathematics teachers’ answers, focusing on their engagement in formal deduction and generalization. The findings indicate that the current problems insufficiently promote the development of formal deduction and rigor, as they are primarily centered on formula applications without requiring proof or generalization. Specific recommendations are provided in the form of redesigned analytic geometric problems aimed at fostering advanced geometric thinking. These redesigns are expected to help pre-service mathematics teachers tackle more complex mathematical problems by encouraging logical reasoning and argumentation.
