Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) of Islamic boarding school students in number topics, specifically number factorization, Least Common Multiple (LCM), and Greatest Common Factor (GCF), based on Anderson’s cognitive taxonomy. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach, using three questions designed to measure higher-order thinking skills at the analysis (C4), evaluation (C5), and creation (C6) levels. The research sample consisted of 22 Islamic boarding school students who were selected using stratified random sampling. The results of the analysis showed that students' abilities in the aspects of analysis and evaluation were quite good, while their abilities in the aspect of creation were still low. Most students were categorized as having moderate and low levels of ability based on the scores obtained. These findings indicated the need for more focused and innovative learning strategies to promote the development of students' HOTS, especially in the context of Islamic boarding schools, which had limited time allocated for general subjects. This study recommended the integration of more challenging and creative learning approaches to improve the quality of students' higher-order thinking skills.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis dan mendeskripsikan profil kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis mahasiswa semester awal Program Studi Pendidikan Guru Sekolah Dasar. Metode deskriptif eksploratif diterapkan dalam penelitian ini. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah Mahasiswa Pendidikan Guru Sekolah Dasar Institut Pendidikan Indonesia Kota Garut Provinsi Jawa Barat. Teknik pengambilan subjek dengan cara purposive sampling. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah Mahasiswa Pendidikan Guru Sekolah Dasar Institut Pendidikan Indonesia yang mengambil mata kuliah Konsep Dasar Matematika semester ganjil tahun akademik 2024-2025 yang berjumlah 34 mahasiswa. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui dokumen jawaban tertulis peserta dan wawancara. Data dianalisis dengan memeriksa lembar jawaban tertulis subjek melalui proses pengkodean dan pengelompokan. Sementara itu, data observasi dianalisis melalui proses reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 79,41% mahasiswa masih mengalami kesulitan dalam membaca memahami masalah yang disajikan. Temuan tersebut menggarisbawahi bahwa kemampuan penyelesaian masalah matematis mahasiswa masih lemah. Profile of mathematical problem-solving ability of primary school teacher prospective students: Preliminary study Abstract: This study aims to analyze and describe the profile of the mathematical problem-solving ability of early semester students of the Elementary School Teacher Education Study Program. The exploratory descriptive method was applied in this study. The population in this study was elementary school teacher education students from the Indonesian Education Institute, Garut City, West Java Province. The subject selection technique was purposive sampling. The subjects in this study were Elementary School Teacher Education Students of the Indonesian Education Institute who took the Basic Concepts of Mathematics course in the odd semester of the 2024-2025 academic year, totaling 34 students. Data collection was carried out through written participant answer documents and interviews. Data were analyzed by examining the subject's written answer sheets through the coding and grouping process. Meanwhile, observation data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results showed that 79.41% of students still had difficulty in reading and understanding the problems presented. The findings underline that students' mathematical problem-solving abilities are still weak.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of the mathematics books used in the Merdeka Curriculum in grade 7 junior high school, with a focus on praxeological analysis in the context of volume cuboids. The research method used is content analysis with a four-component approach to praxeology. The four components are types of tasks, techniques, technology and the last is theory. The results of the research show that the design of textbooks does not provide a type of task that facilitates students to acquire theory independently. This, guides researchers to create alternative designs for the task that provides meaningful learning experience in reference to cuboids volume material

Abstract

This study was conducted in SMPN 1 Cileungsi, the purpose of which was to analyze the pedagogical competence of mathematics teachers together with the learning interests of students based on predetermined indicators. The method used in this study is a quantitative method. Sampling was done using probability sampling by simple random sampling technique so that 100 samples were obtained. Based on the results of the Amos plot, the Chi-square value is 765.652, the probability value is 0.000, the GFI value is 0.662, the AGFI value is 0.612, the TLI value is 0.457, and the RMSEA value is 0.095. A -value of 0.004 is obtained, which is less than  = 0.05, so  it has the interpretation that there is a significant effect between pedagogical  competence and learning interest of students and between pedagogical competence and 1000 learning interest. and the total effect is 2007.

Abstract

Problem-solving skills are an important aspect of mathematics learning that needs to be developed from elementary school. One way to stimulate this ability is through open-ended problems that allow students to express a variety of solution strategies. This study aims to analyze problem-solving strategies and difficulties experienced by grade IV elementary school students in solving story problems of addition and subtraction of whole number with an open approach. The research method used is qualitative with a case study design. The research subjects were grade IV students who were given validated open-ended story questions. Data were collected through learning observation and analyzed descriptively. The results showed that students used different strategies, such as gradually summing, reducing the remaining capacity, and combining the total number with the bus capacity. However, errors in place values, procedural errors, and lack of thoroughness were also found. These findings confirm that open-ended questions are effective in practicing problem-solving as well as exposing students' misconceptions

Abstract

School-related Content Knowledge (SRCK) encompasses profession-specific content knowledge essential for teaching secondary mathematics and bridging the gap between university and school mathematics. Preparing preservice teachers with this knowledge is vital for effective teaching. This study explores the perceptions and performance of preservice mathematics teachers regarding SRCK tasks. Using a qualitative approach and case study design, the research involved twenty third-semester preservice mathematics teachers selected through convenience sampling at a state university in Yogyakarta. Instruments included tests, questionnaires, and interviews to assess SRCK. Data analysis involved content analysis, inductive category formation, thematic categorization, and data triangulation. The findings reveal that preservice mathematics teachers consider SRCK tasks relevant and beneficial for their professional development. However, differences emerge in their evaluation of task relevance and realism, highlighting the need to incorporate more university-level mathematical concepts into SRCK tasks to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Despite recognizing the importance of university mathematics, there is a tendency to rely predominantly on school-level mathematics knowledge. This suggests that teacher preparation programs must address the challenge of mastering more complex university-level concepts to ensure that future educators are adequately prepared to teach advanced mathematical ideas. Varying levels of success in solving SRCK tasks underscore the necessity for a comprehensive integration of university-level mathematical concepts. Such integration aligns with efforts to enhance the relevance of university mathematics education for aspiring teachers. It is recommended that university mathematics be blended with school mathematics and future professional roles to improve conceptual understanding and teaching readiness.

Abstract

Spatial ability is a crucial aspect that supports students in visualizing and understanding abstract mathematical concepts, particularly flat-sided geometric shapes in geometry learning. This study aims to identify the factors that differentiate students with low and high spatial abilities through discriminant analysis. The factors analyzed include Mental Rotation, Spatial Orientation, Visualization, Spatial Relation, and Spatial Perception, measured using a spatial ability test. The test instrument consisted of five questions developed based on the spatial ability framework offered by Maier and validated by mathematics and learning evaluation experts. A total of 34 ninth-grade students from a junior high school in Tangerang Regency were selected through purposive sampling. The analysis results showed that Visualization, Spatial Relation, and Spatial Perception were the main predictors that significantly differentiated the two groups. Visualization supports the ability to imagine geometric objects, Spatial Relation facilitates the understanding of relationships between objects, and Spatial Perception aids in recognizing the position and relationship of geometric elements. The resulting discriminant model had an eigenvalue of 13.967, indicating a strong discriminant power in separating student groups. Understanding these differentiating factors provides a foundation for designing effective learning strategies, such as the use of augmented reality (AR) applications and 3D modeling tools to enhance students’ comprehension of spatial figures. Furthermore, interventions using physical or virtual manipulatives can be tailored to students’ needs, assisting them in mastering the concept of flat-sided geometric shapes.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of an ethnomathematics-based approach on elementary students’ abilities in mathematical problem-solving. Employing a quasi-experimental design with a posttest-only control group, the research involved two equivalent classes at MI An Nur VI in Garut Regency. The experimental group was taught using an ethnomathematics approach incorporating Sundanese cultural elements into geometry lessons, while the control group received conventional instruction. Statistical results revealed a significant difference in posttest scores, favoring the experimental group. These findings suggest that ethnomathematics effectively enhances students’ problem-solving capabilities by offering contextual and culturally relevant learning experiences. The study supports culturally responsive pedagogy and aligns with the Merdeka Curriculum’s vision of inclusive, student-centered education.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji pengaruh pendekatan etnomatematika terhadap kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa sekolah dasar. Metode yang digunakan adalah kuasi eksperimen dengan desain posttest only control group, melibatkan dua kelas paralel di MI An Nur VI, Kabupaten Garut. Kelas eksperimen mengikuti pembelajaran berbasis etnomatematika yang mengintegrasikan unsur budaya Sunda ke dalam materi geometri, sedangkan kelas kontrol memperoleh pembelajaran secara konvensional. Analisis statistik menunjukkan perbedaan signifikan antara kedua kelompok, dengan skor posttest siswa di kelas eksperimen lebih tinggi. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan etnomatematika mampu meningkatkan keterampilan pemecahan masalah matematis melalui pembelajaran yang kontekstual, bermakna, dan selaras dengan budaya lokal. Temuan ini memberikan kontribusi terhadap praktik pembelajaran berbasis kearifan lokal dan mendukung penerapan Kurikulum Merdeka yang berfokus pada pembelajaran yang inklusif dan berpusat pada peserta didik.

Abstract

In the 21st century, thinking is a very important ability, one of which is computational thinking. The purpose of this research is to explain a teacher’s perspective on computational thinking (CT) in elementary school in the Indonesian New Curriculum. The qualitative method was used with a case study. The participant is Bandung's fourth-grade teacher. All teachers received questionnaires. A number of teachers were interviewed. Researchers use data collection tools as their primary tools. The supporting instruments are documentation studies, interviews, and field notes. The results show that teachers know about CT but are still confused about how to teach it in elementary school. They agree that CT is one of the most important skills in the 21st century. They do not understand all CT indicators, and they are unable to formulate CT queries or connect CT with technology. There should be training for teachers on how to integrate learning, technology, and CT.

Abstract

Difficulties in learning calculus remain a major challenge for computer science students because abstract concepts and complex mathematical procedures frequently hinder analytical and computational reasoning abilities. This study aims to develop a digital microlearning module designed to support computer science education students in understanding sigma notation while strengthening their computational thinking skills. A research and development approach adopting the ADDIE framework was employed through analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The module was validated by one mathematics education expert and two computer science education experts specializing in multimedia before being implemented with 41 students. Data were collected through essay-based tests and student perception questionnaires addressing attention, emotional engagement, comprehension, and accessibility aspects. Findings revealed that most students successfully achieved the intended learning objectives, particularly in recognizing numerical patterns, constructing sigma notation expressions, and applying decomposition, pattern recognition, algorithmic thinking, and abstraction during problem-solving activities. Difficulties nevertheless remained in algebraic manipulation and evaluation of generalized summation forms. Students demonstrated positive perceptions toward the developed modules, especially regarding learning flexibility and support for independent learning. These findings indicate that digital microlearning has significant potential to support computational thinking–based calculus learning in computer science education.
