Abstract

Textbook is a tool which functions as a manual instruction in any branch of study included in language learning. Therefore, teachers should select an appropriate English textbook to support the learning activity because it have a big influence in the learning process. This study is about strategies of EFL teachers at a vocational high school in Semarang for selecting appropriate English textbook. The main purpose of this study was to investigate teachers’ strategies in selecting appropriate English textbook and dr. This study drew from the teachers regarding their criteria in selecting appropriate English textbook. Hence, this is a qualitative study that investigate the EFL teachers as the subjects. In collecting the data, we used open ended interview, questionnaire, and document analysis checklist. This study eployed theory of Garinger (2002) and BNSP by Permendikbud (2013) to analyse the data in order to know the strategies and the criteria used by the teachers in selecting appropriate English textbook. Based on the interview and the questionnaire, the finding showed there are some strategies in selecting appropriate textbook: teacher matched the textbook with the 2013 curriculum, read the KI, KD, Syllabus and learning objective. The data showed that all teachers select textbook based on their chosen, so that they were free to choose their textbook to support learning activity. However, some teachers select textbook by involving administrator and head school. There are also some textbook criteria there are: considering the goals and curriculum, textbook series, learning objective in the textbook, the age and background of the students, the availability and the effective cost. Based on the document analysis checklist, this research showed that the criteria of appropriate textbook in line with the Garinger (2002) and 2013 curriculum aspects based on BNSP. Next, the teachers also considered about the price of the textbook that must be cost effective and the textbook is easy to obtain. We argue that the identified strategies and criteria can be used as a consideration by English teachers to selectan appropriate English textbook.

Abstract

In the learning process, teachers should pose some questions in order to check what has been learnt and understood, to help them review previous learning, and assess whether students are ready or not to move forward and learn new information. Regarding that statement, questioning section in the learning process is important. The aim of this research was to find out how the teachers use the questioning section in the learning process to promote the students’ high order thinking skills which are divided into three skills that are analysing, evaluating and creating skill. This study implied case study research. The instruments used in this research were observation checklist, recording, interview and questionnaire. The main data was the teachers’ recording in the learning process. The subjects of this study were three teachers of a religion-based high school in Semarang, Central Java. and the students of that school. The findings of the study showed that the teachers used questioning section in their learning process. The kinds of questions used were mostly open questions and close question or yes/no questions. Those questions were used in order to make the students think more critically. The teachers think that high order thinking skill is so important for the students so they applied those skills maximally in the learning process and by questioning, the teacher could get some advantages such as they could assess the students and also know the students understanding toward the material given. It can be concluded that the use of teacher’s questioning could be a tool to promote students’ high order thinking skills in EFL learning. It is also suggested for the teachers to use more questioning section in the learning process.

Abstract

Needs analysis for vocational high school English course is important because English course for vocational high school is considered too general compared to the target situation that the students will need in their future career. This study aimed to analyse the students’ teachers’, alumni’s, stakeholders’, and expert’s perceptions to explain the vocational high school civil engineering students’ needs in their English course. This study used a qualitative case design by using open questionnaires and in-depth interviews as the methods of collecting data. The findings showed that the main goal of the English course was to prepare the students to face the needs of English in their target situation. The learning approach needed was a scientific approach by using inquiry or discovery learning. The students needed more learning source which involved the target situation and a course which considered their current English proficiency. Finally, the students needed a course set that represented the target situation and teachers who were not only experts in pedagogical competence but also ESP. The results of the study can be used by the education practitioners to help them design better course for vocational high school civil engineering students.

Abstract

English language learning has shifted with the development of technology in education. Learning can also be done through easy access from a mobile phone. Educational mobile applications bridge the teaching learning processes effectively. This study aims to investigate the teachers’ practices in using educational mobile applications to teach English in senior high school in Semarang. This study utilize case study approach to achieve the objectives of the study. Questionnaire, interview, document analysis, and classroom observation were applied to investigate the teachers’ practices in using educational mobile applications in relation to multimedia learning theory and the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) theory. An evaluation rubric was used to find out the effectiveness of the educational mobile applications the participants used in teaching. Then a compatibility checklist was used to find out the compatibility of the educational mobile applications with the current curriculum, the 2013 curriculum. The findings revealed that the teachers were aware of multimedia learning when they chose to use certain educational mobile applications to teach English. They also possessed what the TPACK suggested. Therefore, they had the tools they needed to integrate technology into their classrooms. The study showed that from the five educational mobile applications the teachers used, Google Classroom was the most effective, whereas Goggle Drive was the least effective. The other three, 360 Video, YouTube, and Google Slides could, meanwhile, be considered effective apps. In case of compatibility of the educational mobile apps with the 2013 curriculum, it could be said that all of the educational mobile applications were compatible with the curriculum since they were applicable in classroom settings.

Abstract

Many ironic, cynical, and sarcastic expressions are found in Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk trilogy. Because of the differences of situational context and cultural background, it is not easy for the target readers to grab the information and mission or messages delivered by Ahmad Tohari in the source text. Some techniques might be chosen by the translator. The accuracy, acceptability or naturalness, and readability of the ironic, cynical, and sarcastic expressions should also be considered. The aims of the study were first to identify the translation techniques of ironic, cynical, and sarcastic expression in Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk trilogy from Indonesian into English, and the second, to explore the translation accuracy, acceptability, and readability of translating ironic, cynical, and sarcastic expression in Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk trilogy from Indonesian into English. The object of this study was Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk trilogy written by Ahmad Tohari translated by Rene T.A. Lysloff. This study employed embedded research design. It combined or integrated qualitative and quantitative data. The data analysis was deductively built from particular to general. The result of the translation techniques analysis shows that the most dominant translation techniques are established equivalent, reduction, and modulation. Based on the analysis, it reveals that the translation quality of ironic expression translation possesses the highest score compared with cynic and sarcastic expressions translation. It can be concluded that translation techniques influence the translation quality. It might be suggested for the future researchers to investigate how translation technique influences the translation quality.

Abstract

Previous studies shows that several learning strategies have been used to promote critical thinking skills for students at the university level, the most frequently used is presentation. The students in the third semester of the English department in IAIN Pekalongan have distinctive responses regarding their critical thinking skills in their presentation. This study aimed to explain students’ perception, plan and implementation in their use of critical thinking skills in their presentation. This study was qualitative case study. The data gathered by classroom observation, questionnaires, and interviews. The findings showed (1) The students positively perceived their use of critical thinking skills in their presentation, they believed that critical thinking skills help them to enable their presentation, English skills, and performance (2) the students plan their critical thinking skills by preparing the schema, skills, and practicing (3) the implementation of critical thinking skills in students' presentation by combining students' awareness, activeness, and learning style. Theoretically, critical thinking skills are fundamental to be implemented in higher education students. Practically, the result of this study gave benefit for the lecturer in giving students challenging tasks that encourage them to use their critical thinking skills. Pedagogically, the implementation of critical thinking skills in students’ presentations needs a student-lecturer relationship.

Abstract

Abstract— PT. Nara Summit, Cikarang engaged in the manufacture of automobile spare parts, at PT. Nara Summit supplier selection is very important, especially in terms of making the raw materials that they produce so that the spare parts with good quality and sold to customers. Currently many suppliers who go to PT. Nara Summit to offer raw materials that they sell, but need to do the study because some suppliers sell the same raw materials. Errors in supplier selection affect the quality of spare parts and costs incurred in purchasing raw materials from suppliers. The company difficulties in assessing the suppliers to be selected. Therefore, PT. Nara Summit requires a decision support system that can help choose the best supplier accurately based on predetermined criteria. The selection of suppliers will use Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) method to determine priority or ranking.Intisari— PT. Nara Summit, Cikarang bergerak dibidang pembuatan sparepart mobil, pada PT. Nara Summit pemilihan supplier sangatlah penting, terutama dalam hal pembuatan bahan baku yang mereka produksi sehingga menjadi spare part dengan kualitas yang bagus dan dijual kepada pelanggan. Saat ini banyak supplier yang masuk ke PT. Nara Summit untuk menawarkan bahan baku yang mereka jual, namun perlu di lakukan kajian karena beberapa supplier menjual bahan baku yang sama. Kesalahan dalam pemilihan supplier berdampak pada kualitas spare part dan biaya yang telah dikeluarkan dalam pembelian bahan baku dari supplier. Pihak perusahaan kesulitan dalam melakukan penilai terhadap supplier yang akan dipilih. Oleh karena itu, PT. Nara Summit membutuhkan sebuah system penunjang keputusan yang dapat membantu memilih supplier terbaik secara akurat berdasarkan kriteria yang sudah ditentukan. Abstract

ABSTRACTThe choice of the problem of classroom action research is based on the fact that students' ability to read news texts is still very low. Whereas with the mastery of Indonesian language lessons in general students do not have difficulty learning other subjects. This research was conducted in July to November 2015, because in those months the students had completed the first semester of the general exam and were still at the beginning of the second semester so that the students' conditions could be observed from the beginning.Cooperative Method STAD is a learning method wherein the learning process teaches the teacher to invite students to work together in groups to complete assignments in the classroom and allow students to find information on information that can be traditionally told or disguised.From this writing it can be concluded that with the motivation in learning STAD cooperative learning methods the students' ability to read news scripts increases and learning outcomes will be optimal. The more precise the motivation given, the more successful the lesson will be. With high motivation, the intensity of student learning efforts will also be high. So motivation will always determine the intensity of student learning. This will improve student understanding.Keywords: Reading News Scripts, Cooperative STAD

ermasalahan yang dihadapi oleh guru-guru MGMP bahasa Inggris SMPSub Rayon 1 Ungaran (mitra) adalah bahwa mereka membutuhkan hal-hal berikut: 1) panduan praktis dalam melaksanakan Kurikulum 2013 (Kurtilas), khususnya dalam melaksanakan kegiatan pembelajaran, 2) pelatihan kegiatan pembelajaran yang mengintegrasikan dan dapat mengembangkan sikap, pengetahuan, dan keterampilan peserta didik, dan 3) pelatihan tentang kegiatan pembelajaran yang dapat membantu peserta didik untuk meningkatkan kompetensi komunikatif dalambahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu, tujuan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat iniadalah meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan guru-guru MGMP mitradalam Kurtilas. Lebih spesifik, kegiatan ini bertujuan meningkatkan pengetahuandan keterampilan guru-guru dalam MGMP tersebut dalam menerapkanpembelajaran kooperatif.

Abstract

Produktivitas dapat tercapai jika manajemen memahami faktor-faktor yang menentukan keberhasilan produktivitas kerja. Perusahaan berharap karyawannya dapat bekerja dengan baik, mencapai produktivitas yang tinggi dan mampu mengartikulasikan visi dan misi yang telah disepakati dalam mencapai tujuan perusahaan.Tujuan rotasi kerja dan stres kerja secara parsial maupun secara simultan mempengaruh produktivitas kerja di pabrik krupuk UD Kriuk DVD kunir Kediri. Metode penelitian kuantitatif yang digunakan. Populasi ini meliputi semua karyawan di pabrik krupuk UD Kriuk DVD kunir kediri berjumlah 60 orang. Sampel diambil berdasarkan pegawai tetap yang bekerja minimal 1 tahun sebanyak 60 orang, Teknik pengambilan sampel yang digunakan adalah random sampling. Metode pengumpulan data kuesioner. Teknik analisis data menggunakan uji regresi linier berganda uji t dan uji F. Hasil analisis regresi linier berganda cincin kerja individu tidak berpengaruh signifikan terhadap produktivitas kerja pabrik UD Krupuk. Kriuk DVD Kunir Kediri. Hasil ekstraksi thitung = 1,974 < t tab = 2,015. Hasil uji analisis regresi linier berganda bahwa stres kerja individu berpengaruh signifikan terhadap produktivitas kerja pada pabrik UD Krupuk. Kriuk DVD Kunir Kediri. Hal ini diperoleh dari nilai thitung = 11,988 > ttabel = 2,015. Variabel Yang terutama mempengaruhi produktivitas karyawan adalah variabel stres kerja individu (X2). Hasil perolehan nilai regresi linier berganda adalah 1,093, variabel rotasi kontribusi adalah 0,236.
