Abstract

The 2024 Batubara Regency Regent Election highlighted the use of religious and cultural identity-based political communication in digital spaces, particularly social media. This article aims to analyze the forms, strategies, and impacts of identity political communication constructed by political actors in the contest. Using a critical phenomenological approach and digital content analysis, this study explores how symbols, narratives, and representations of religious and cultural identity are produced, disseminated, and received by the multi-ethnic, predominantly Muslim community of Batubara. The results reveal three main patterns: (1) the use of religious symbols for the moral legitimacy of candidates; (2) the affirmation of local cultural identity as an emotional connection with voters; and (3) the representation of ethnic identity that is sometimes exploited in negative campaigns. Social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, have become primary platforms for the dissemination of identity narratives through hashtags, visual content, and short videos. This study also found a dual impact of identity politics, strengthening the consolidation of support but also causing emotional polarization and social fragmentation. These findings emphasize the importance of identity politics in the Batubara contest, as well as the need to improve political and digital literacy to minimize its negative impacts.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Research on English language teacher education has largely emphasized practicum experiences in shaping professional identity and teaching readiness. However, limited attention has been given to how coursework in English for Young Learners (EYL) programs contributes to early identity formation. This gap warrants closer empirical examination Methodology: A total of 121 students enrolled in EYL courses were invited to participate, and 50 of them gave their consent. Data were collected through reflective journals and a Likert-scale questionnaire. Findings: Thematic analysis revealed four recurring themes: evolving teacher identity, teaching readiness, impactful coursework components, and aspirations for future practice. Quantitative findings supported these insights, with a strong correlation found between meaningful coursework experiences and students’ visions for their future classrooms. While many participants felt intellectually prepared, some expressed concerns about emotional readiness, underscoring the need for supportive, hands-on learning environments. Conclusion: The study concludes that coursework has formatively built not only the pre-service teachers’ skills, but also a strong and sustainable sense of who they are and hope to be as future EYL educators. Originality: Grounded in English for Young Learners pedagogy, this study foregrounds coursework as a critical site of early professional identity formation for pre-service EYL teachers. Moving beyond practicum-centered ELT research, it provides mixed-method evidence of how child-centered, play-based, and reflective coursework shapes identity, teaching readiness, and future classroom enactment in an EFL context.

Abstract

Based on the results of a preliminary observation, the activities of Majelis Taklim Miftahul Ulum in Sulai Village, which were previously conducted once a month, have not been active in recent months. This community engagement program aimed to enhance participants’ understanding through practical mentoring on the procedures of thaharah (ritual purification), as well as to foster religious awareness and spiritual responsibility among the women members of the majelis taklim regarding the importance of maintaining both physical and spiritual purity as the fundamental foundation of worship. This mentoring activity employed the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method, which integrates research, action, and direct community participation in a cyclical process to address problems and empower the community. The implementation of this community service program adopted participatory and educational approaches. The results indicated that, prior to the mentoring program, the level of understanding among the women members of Majelis Taklim Miftahul Ulum in Sulai Village regarding the concept and procedures of thaharah was relatively low. The implementation of the mentoring program had a positive impact on improving the quality of their religious practices. This impact was evident not only in the technical aspects of worship performance but also in changes in attitudes, increased spiritual awareness, and the strengthening of women’s roles in fostering religious life within their families.
