Abstract

The development of digital technology in recent decades has influenced English education, especially in teaching vocabulary. Several previous studies have been investigated that focus on teaching vocabulary challenges through technology. However, all of those studies do not touch on the use of technology in special needs students. This study investigated the teachers’ challenges in developing students with special needs through technology. A qualitative approach with a case study design was used in this study. This study involved six EFL female teachers who taught students with special needs in one of the inclusive schools in Central Java, Indonesia, with several criteria, including having at least five years of experience in learning by using technology for teaching children with special needs, one of which is in the context of teaching vocabulary to students with special needs themselves. A semi-structured interview was designed to collect the data to obtain detailed information about teachers' barriers to using technology to develop students with special needs vocabulary. Thematic analysis was conducted to analyze the qualitative data in some steps: transcription of the interviews, identification of the main themes, coding, categorizing the themes, and making a conclusion. The study's findings indicated that teachers faced three main challenges: students’ concentration, engagement, and language.

Abstract

The simulation of the pneumatic antiloc brake system (ABS) is a system on the vehicle that functions to prevent the wheels from locking during sudden braking. The application of the antilock brake system is still limited to certain vehicles because the price is quite expensive. For this reason, a study on the ABS brake simulation system was carried out to find out how the pneumatic brake system works. The addition of ultrasonic sensor components that are controlled through arduino ABS is poured into the design of the ABS pneumatic brake system (antilockbrakesystem). This test was carried out to determine the ultrasonic sensor control as an automatic control of the brake with a variation in the distance set on the arduino microcontroller brake control (200 cm, 100 cm) performs air solenoid control as a braking trigger in the condition before, during and after braking. The research was conducted looking at the control of the Arduino application monitor. From the results of the study, it was obtained that the addition of ultrasonic sensor components to the condition when the vehicle has obstacles or obstacles to brake work automatically which often occurs in urban areas. The system is carried out using ultrasonic trigger work. From this data, the ABS braking system works according to the ABS braking system settings that rely on ultrasonic distance resistance to produce medium to full valve closure commands.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of the Duolingo app on enhancing the listening skills of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Langgenharjo 01 Juwana. Using a quasi-experimental design, this research involved 23 students categorized into a treatment group and a comparison group. The experimental group used Duolingo for listening exerciseswhereas the control group utilized traditional listening approaches. Data was gathered through initial and final assessments, followed by statistical analysis using the t-test and N-gain test. Findings demonstrated a notable enhancement in the listening abilities of the experimental group relative to the control group. The mean pre-test score for the experimental group stood at 61.25, which rose to 80.83 in the post-test. In contrast, the control group's average score increased slightly from 56.45 to 58.81. The t-test results indicated a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05), confirming that Duolingo effectively enhances students' listening skills. These findings support the use of technology-based learning tools in language education, particularly for listening comprehension. Duolingo's interactive and gamified approach increases student engagement and motivation, making it a valuable supplement to traditional learning methods. This study suggests that integrating Duolingo into the curriculum can enhance students' listening skills and overall language proficiency.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a primary skill in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, but many of them face challenges that impede their language learning. This study investigates reading comprehension problems experienced by EFL learners at Champasack University (Laos), and suggests solutions to remediate these problems. A qualitative case study was employed, involving semi-structured interviews with 10 final-year students to explore their experiences and coping strategies. This study highlights the important barriers learners face such as limited vocabulary, complex grammatical structures, and summarizing and identifying main ideas. Strategies such as using a dictionary, context-guessing, and collaborating with peers are employed, but these are often not enough in the absence of structured support. Although they elevate pressing interest in redressing the factors that put children at risk for literacy challenges, with a focus on systematic vocabulary instruction focused on explicit instruction and teaching cognitive and metacognitive strategies for teaching reading comprehension, the results also suggest the following possible interventions: Also, using digital tools and collaborative learning activities can alleviate reading anxiety and enhance learner motivation, creating a more bolstered learning environment. The study reaffirmed the need for targeted pedagogical intervention and that future work might discover how to make such strategies more effective over the long term and the part digital literacy plays in EFL pedagogy. Our findings provide valuable insights for educators and policy-makers, who might find it helpful in possibly improving reading comprehension outcomes for EFL learners across different learning contexts.
