Abstract

Background - Facilitator capacity is critical for the effectiveness of community-based early warning systems (CBEWS) in disaster risk reduction. Facilitators serve as intermediaries translating complex hazard data into actionable insights that enable communities to respond effectively to disasters. In Indonesia, where disaster risk is high, facilitators play an essential role in protecting lives and livelihoods at the grassroots level. Urgency of Research - Despite their importance, capacity-building approaches for CBEWS facilitators often employ top-down training methods that fail to engage facilitators as active agents in their own learning. Current programs lack participatory approaches that leverage facilitators' contextual knowledge and experience, undermining the sustainability and relevance of capacity-building initiatives. There is an urgent need for innovative, participatory approaches that position facilitators as co-creators of knowledge. Research Objectives - This study aimed to describe the process and outcomes of implementing participatory action research (PAR) to enhance the capacity of CBEWS program facilitators in nonformal education settings, investigating how PAR supports facilitator understanding of CBEWS concepts, develops contextual and adaptive facilitation skills, cultivates reflective capacity, and identifies enabling and inhibiting factors. Research Method - This qualitative descriptive study was conducted between 2021 and 2024 across seven disaster-prone Indonesian provinces: Central Java, East Java, West Java, Banten, South Kalimantan, Gorontalo, and Bali. Forty-five CBEWS facilitators participated in PAR cycles involving planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through 60+ hours of participatory observation, 20 in-depth interviews, 8 focus group discussions, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was employed to identify patterns and themes. Research Findings - Three dimensions of capacity development emerged: enhanced understanding of CBEWS concepts applicable to specific disaster contexts; improved contextual and adaptive facilitation skills enabling tailoring of approaches to community needs and creation of inclusive learning environments; and cultivated reflective capacity for systematic practice improvement. Enabling factors included institutional support, facilitator openness to learning, and collaborative researcher-facilitator relationships. Inhibiting factors included limited time for reflection, dual roles as implementers and learners, and organizational barriers. Research Conclusion & Novelty - Participatory action research effectively develops facilitator capacity when supported by institutional commitment and multi-year engagement. This approach provides a viable model for community-based disaster risk reduction programs, contributing to both adult learning theory in nonformal education settings and practical disaster risk reduction implementation.

Abstract

This research investigated how shrimp farmers perceive climate change and what factors influence their decision to implement adaptation strategies. Surveys were conducted with 150 households in Tambakan, Kalianyar, Raci 1, and Raci 2. Over the past five years, information about climate change has primarily reached farmers through radio and television (54%). The majority (96.21%) perceived climate change as manifested by altered rainfall patterns, rising pond water temperatures (98.71%), declining production yields (95.41%), and an increase in shrimp pests and diseases (96.23%). The researchers classified climate change adaptation strategies into four categories and used logit regression analysis to identify factors influencing their adoption. They found that the determinants of adoption varied across these categories. Based on these findings, the study concludes that raising awareness about the impact of climate change on shrimp farming is crucial for farmers to choose suitable adaptation strategies. Additionally, strengthening institutional support through improved access to association borrowing, markets, extension services, farm group activities, and use of climate-resistant shrimp varieties can contribute to increased farm production.

Abstract

This study explores the journey of a windsurfing athlete in preparing for the XXI National Sports Week (PON) Aceh–North Sumatra 2024. Using an autoethnographic approach, it examines the technical, mental, and infrastructural challenges faced by the athlete, as well as the role of nutrition, sleep, and social support in enhancing performance. The findings reveal that adapting to the new iQFoil equipment is a major challenge, requiring mastery of new techniques. Balanced nutrition and quality sleep play a crucial role in maintaining stamina and recovery, while support from coaches, family, and sponsors significantly contributes to motivation and mental resilience. However, limited training facilities and the lack of high-quality domestic competitions remain significant obstacles to windsurfing development in Indonesia. This study recommends improving infrastructure, organizing high-quality domestic competitions, and providing internationally certified coaching programs to enhance athlete development. With long-term investment in infrastructure and training programs, Indonesia has the potential to produce world-class windsurfing athletes.

Abstract

Competence in responding in English communication is a fundamental ability. The principle of English communication is that it is balanced according to individual needs, open spoken language, takes place in a curriculum and has diversity. The basic principles of acceptable English communication include 3 points, namely contextual, in line with scope and responsive. Context-based English speaking training trains teachers to teach English not just language knowledge, but also includes balanced cognitive and psychomotor skills. This service activity has become a solution to students' low basic skills in communicating using foreign languages. The implementation methods used to solve partners' priority problems are focus group discussions (FGD), training and mentoring, teaching simulations for implementing TPR and basic English based on contextual purpose, speaking tests based on context for students. The teachers were very enthusiastic after participating in this training and it became easier to modify English learning for elementary school students in a more natural and applied way.

Abstract

For this study, we will create a comic book using a Facebook application for teachers in Indonesia to use with their students. The purpose of this assessment is to determine the usability, effectiveness, and practicality of this media for fifth-grade students at MIS Miftahul Jannah. The research and development followed the ADDIE model, which consists of five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. A total of 25 fifth-grade students participated in this study. Validation sheets for professional and student surveys were used to obtain data. The results of this study support the idea that classrooms in Indonesia can benefit from the use of Facebook comics. Studies show that fictional comics can change the world for the better. The percentage of validation by media experts increased from 63.33% in the first stage, "feasible," to 90% in the second stage, "very feasible." Expert validation of the material resulted in a 96% increase in feasibility in Phase II compared to 84% in Phase I. Nearly nine out of ten students (88.33%) found the media to be very good for learning. According to the effectiveness test results, an N-Gain score of 0.67 (66.92%) was considered quite effective. At MIS Miftahul Jannah, we utilize Facebook comics as a practical, feasible, and effective tool for teaching Indonesian narrative texts to fifth-grade students.

Abstract

The development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has brought significant changes to various aspects of life. However, it has also given rise to serious challenges related to data security and user privacy protection. The low level of digital literacy among the public, particularly in understanding the risks of data breaches and the misuse of personal information, has increased vulnerability to cybercrime in the digital era. This community service activity aims to enhance public knowledge, awareness, and skills in safeguarding data security and privacy amid the rapid adoption of AI-based technologies. The activity was implemented using an educational and participatory approach through workshops, interactive lectures, discussions, case simulations, and hands-on practice in securing digital accounts. The program involved 20 participants consisting of teachers and staff at SD Negeri 060922 Medan. Evaluation was conducted through pre-tests and post-tests to measure improvements in participants’ understanding. The results indicate an average increase in participants’ knowledge of 40%, along with heightened awareness of the importance of password management, privacy settings, and vigilance against cyber threats. This activity demonstrates that community-based education on data security and privacy is effective in improving digital literacy and fostering safer and more responsible technology use behaviors. Therefore, similar initiatives should be carried out on a sustained basis to support the development of a secure, ethical, and adaptive digital ecosystem in response to advancements in artificial intelligence.
