Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the Project-Based Learning (PJBL) method in enhancing students’ speaking skills at SMPN 2 Balocci, Pangkajene Regency. The research is grounded in Thomas’s (2000) framework of PJBL, which emphasizes learner-centered instruction through authentic, meaningful projects that require students to actively engage, collaborate, and produce tangible outcomes. It is also supported by Brown’s (2004) theory of speaking skills, which highlights three essential components—fluency, accuracy, and comprehensibility—as fundamental aspects of oral communication competence. The combination of these frameworks provided both theoretical and pedagogical foundations for this study. A pre-experimental research design with a one-group pre-test and post-test model was employed. The sample consisted of 73 purposively selected students. Data were collected through an individual speaking test divided into three sections: introduction, monologue, and interactive discussion. Students’ performances were assessed using the JACOB (1980) speaking rubric, which evaluates accuracy, fluency, and comprehensibility as indicators of communicative ability. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ speaking performance following the implementation of the PJBL method. The mean score increased substantially from the pre-test to the post-test, indicating notable progress in students’ oral proficiency. Results from the paired sample t-test confirmed that the difference between pre-test and post-test scores was statistically significant at the 0.05 level (p < 0.05). This demonstrates that the PJBL method effectively contributes to the development of students’ speaking skills. In conclusion, the Project-Based Learning method not only improved students’ ability to speak English more fluently, accurately, and comprehensibly but also fostered motivation, creativity, and collaboration in the classroom. The findings suggest that PJBL is a promising instructional approach for English language learning, particularly in contexts where communicative competence and student engagement are prioritized.

Abstract

This study investigates academic stress among students of the English Literature Study Program at Universitas Muslim Indonesia (UMI), Makassar, South Sulawesi. The objectives were: (1) to identify the main sources of academic stress, (2) to analyze internal and external contributing factors, and (3) to examine coping mechanisms employed by students across different semesters. A qualitative case study approach was applied, using semi-structured interviews as the primary instrument, followed by thematic analysis of responses from first, third, and seventh semester students. Findings revealed that stress evolves with academic progression: first-semester students experienced adjustment-related stress, third-semester students reported performance pressure and fear of failure, and seventh semester students faced graduation-related stress. Contributing factors included self-expectation, low self-efficacy, poor time management, family expectations, peer competition, and language challenges, while institutional factors were less significant. Coping mechanisms varied across semesters, ranging from personal relaxation, hobbies, and prayer to peer collaboration and institutional support, with clear gender differences in coping preferences. The study concludes that academic stress at Universitas Muslim Indonesia is dynamic and culturally embedded. It recommends semester-specific and gender-sensitive interventions, including strengthening self-efficacy, promoting adaptive coping strategies, enhancing family engagement, and providing institutional support to foster resilience and student well-being.

Abstract

The increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in higher education has significantly influenced students’ academic writing practices, raising concerns about writing development and academic integrity. This study explores how AI impacts students’ writing skills and academic integrity from the perspectives of English lecturers teaching academic writing courses at a state university in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative research design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations. Reflexive Thematic Analysis was used as the primary analytical approach, supported by metadata analysis to strengthen data interpretation. The findings indicate that AI contributes positively to surface-level writing aspects such as grammatical accuracy and text organization. However, excessive reliance on AI tools tends to reduce students’ originality, critical thinking, and engagement in the writing process. Lecturers also reported growing challenges in maintaining academic integrity, as AI-generated texts often blur the boundaries between assistance and misconduct. The absence of clear institutional policies and the limited reliability of AI detection tools further complicate the issue. This study concludes that while AI has the potential to support students’ writing development, its uncontrolled use poses serious risks to authentic learning and academic integrity. The findings highlight the importance of developing AI literacy, adopting process-oriented assessment, and establishing institutional guidelines to ensure the ethical integration of AI in academic writing instruction.

Abstract

Differentiated Instruction is regarded as an essential approach in modern education because it allows teachers to design learning activities that align with students’ varying abilities, interests, and learning styles, resulting in a more inclusive and meaningful learning process. However, although several studies have examined its implementation, research focusing on students’ perceptions of Differentiated Instruction at the vocational high school level remains limited. This study aims to investigate students’ perceptions of the implementation of Differentiated Instruction, particularly in relation to learning achievement, collaboration, and motivation. This research employed a descriptive quantitative design involving 114 students at SMK 1 Gowa. Data were collected using a questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability, and were analyzed descriptively using SPSS. The findings indicate that 66.7% of students’ perceptions in the achievement aspect fall into the Very Positive category. Subsequently, 61.4% of students’ perceptions in the collaboration aspect are in the Positive category, and 60.3% of students’ perceptions in the motivation aspect also fall into the Positive category.

Abstract

This study aims to explore teachers’ perceptions of students’ speaking anxiety problems at SMKN 4 Barru and the strategies used to address them. A descriptive qualitative research design was employed in this study. The data were collected through interviews with English teachers and analyzed thematically. The findings reveal that students’ speaking anxiety is caused by several factors, including lack of confidence, limited knowledge of speaking topics, fear of negative judgment from peers, and lack of experience in speaking in public. The teacher addresses these problems through three main stages: reception, understanding, and evaluation. In the reception stage, the teacher applies a supportive approach by motivating students and starting speaking activities with simple and familiar topics. In the understanding stage, the teacher identifies psychological and social factors that contribute to students’ anxiety. In the evaluation stage, relaxation techniques such as slow breathing and focusing strategies are used to help students manage anxiety and maintain classroom interaction. The study concludes that teachers’ awareness of students’ emotional conditions and the use of appropriate strategies play an important role in reducing students’ speaking anxiety and encouraging active participation in English speaking activities. Abstract

This study examined the relationship between reading motivation and English literacy achievement among EFL learners. A quantitative correlational design was employed, using a reading motivation questionnaire and a standardized English literacy test administered to 30 intermediate-level students. Descriptive analysis showed that students demonstrated high literacy performance with moderate variability in reading motivation. Pearson correlation and simple linear regression revealed that reading motivation significantly predicted literacy achievement (R = 0.512, R² = 0.262, p = 0.004), indicating that 26.2% of the variance in literacy scores could be explained by motivation levels. Furthermore, an independent-samples t-test revealed no significant difference in literacy performance between male and female students (t = 0.925, p = 0.363). These findings highlight the central role of motivation in supporting literacy development in EFL contexts, suggesting that teaching practices should prioritize developing reading motivation. The study concluded that motivation is a key psychological factor influencing literacy outcomes, while gender plays no significant role in determining literacy achievement.

Abstract

The global educational paradigm has moved beyond knowledge transmission to focus on holistic competencies, a transition mirrored in Indonesia’s Merdeka Curriculum with its emphasis on contextual relevance, learner differentiation, and the Pancasila Student Profile. Within English language education, this mandates a pedagogical reorientation, for which Culturally Responsive English Teaching (CRET) presents a critical framework, positioning students’ cultural backgrounds as foundational assets for instruction. As the primary agents of this reform, teachers’ capacity to implement CRET is paramount, with the Teacher Professional Education Program (PPG) serving as a key conduit for professional readiness. However, the specific preparedness of PPG graduates, a cohort strategically trained for curricular innovation, remains empirically unverified. This quantitative correlational study investigates the relationships between PPG graduates’ psychological dispositions (interest, motivation, self-efficacy), their general instructional practices, and the quality of CRET implementation within the Merdeka Curriculum. Data from purposively sampled Indonesian EFL teachers (n=121) were analyzed to determine correlational strength and predictive power. Results revealed that while descriptive levels of interest, motivation, self-efficacy, and CRET-aligned practices were high, only self-efficacy and instructional practices demonstrated significant positive correlations with implementation quality. Notably, multiple regression analysis identified self-efficacy as the strongest positive predictor, whereas interest emerged as a significant negative predictor when other variables were controlled. This counterintuitive finding suggests that isolated theoretical interest, without corresponding practical competence or contextual support, may not translate into effective classroom enactment, suggesting potential contextual or translational barriers between disposition and enactment. The findings underscore the complexity of translating pedagogical commitment into practice, highlighting that systemic professional development must extend beyond fostering theoretical interest to strategically building applied, context-specific competence and efficacy. Consequently, PPG programs should prioritize experiential learning, such as mentored practicums focused on CRT, to bridge the gap between pedagogical interest and actionable skill.
