Abstract

Abstract

This research investigated EFL Indonesian students' perception of using e-dictionaries in learning English. The subjects were 50 students still studying at a university in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. They completed a questionnaire, and ten were selected to be further interviewed. The questionnaire and interview questions were developed from several theories proposed by experts. The results of the study showed that the students had a positive attitude toward the use of e-dictionaries. Although e-dictionaries provided some benefits for students’ language learning, especially in vocabulary, such as ease of use, time, and place, the students also faced some difficulties using them. These included incomplete information on the definitions offered for words searched, uncomfortable and constant pop-up advertisements on the apps, cost and internet quota, and finally, eye health issues where students could not read their smartphone screen for some time duration. It is hoped that as the dominance of digital technology increases, more applications in the future can resolve these problems to better assist students in language learning.

Abstract

This study aims to unravel what foremost students learning objectives and expected learning environment as well as to investigate how these two aspects might affect learning motivation. Both quantitative and qualitative research approaches were applied, and the data were collected from questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire was distributed to 122 students, and the interview session covered eight students. Data from the questionnaire showed that 64.5% of students responded to ‘always’ for future job opportunities, 43.4% for understanding journals, 36.9 for scholarly needs, 36.9% for English as a prestigious language, around 36.2% for becoming a lecturer, 29% for going abroad, and 28.1% for parents’ suggestion. Regarding the learning environments, it was discovered that 67.7% of students responded as ‘strongly agreed’ for teachers should be friendly, 52.9% for opportunities to express opinions, 52.5% for various teaching activities materials, and about 41% for the use of L1 (Indonesian language) in teaching. Moreover, the study showed that learning objectives affect motivation because English was believed for a better future opportunity, for academic requirements such as understanding journals, and for passing standardized test regulation. It was furthermore considered as prestigious and valued for the economy, learned to know its interesting cultures, deemed an attractive language through teachers’ modeling, opened more overseas opportunities as to it is an international language, and parents saw it as a ‘blessing’ to learn. The study also explained that learning environments were influenced by teachers’ personality, teaching methods and materials, and an expectation of a ubiquitous language.

Abstract

The study aims to identify the ways to produce text production process by Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN, or State Islamic University) students in Padang on Facebook. Documentations, observations, and in depth-interviews were used to collect data. There were 1,214 discourses found on group and personal accounts of 27 informants, and 400 discourses were taken as data of the research. The analysis was conducted by following Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, (CDA), with the Critical Linguistics approach. The research findings show that the text production process by UIN students on Facebook were done in three ways, namely producing their own text, spreading other people’s texts that are shared from the site, and producing text as a result of consumption of other texts. Producing text itself is a way of producing text by creating its own status as a form of expression of thoughts, feelings, and experiences, without referring to other texts or texts that have been published on other walls. The form of production by spreading text from other website is the most common form of text production. Production status is a form of the author’s reaction to the text he or she understood.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of formative exams and communicative grammar teaching strategies on the students’ oral response-ability. This research had a 2x2 factorial experimental design where 80 third-year university students were assigned using multistage cluster probability random sampling. The data were analyzed using a two-way covariance analysis (ANCOVA) to test the research hypotheses. The study outcomes demonstrated that students taught with constructive formative tests had higher achievement than those receiving the selective formative examination. The result indicated that deductive learning with concept maps was more effective in improving students’ ability of communicative competence compared to inductive learning. Additionally, this study found that students taught with deductive grammar instructional strategy accompanied by English concept maps demonstrated higher achievement in communicative competence than those taught with inductive grammar instructional strategy in the group of students treated with the selective formative test. Deductive learning procedures with concept maps had positive impacts from the inductive strategy to the student capacity to respond orally among students who were given constructive formative examinations. Notably, the effectiveness of various sub-instructional tactics and sub-formative test combinations on students’ verbal response capacity varied. Thus, English teachers must create formative examinations by considering constructive formative tests. Based on the research findings, recommendations for how teachers can improve students’ oral-response ability by adopting appropriate assessments using more deductive learning are discussed.
