Abstract

BACKGROUND: Quercetin has been shown to alleviate and prevent atherosclerosis. However, its role in stabilizing atherosclerotic plaques to prevent plaque rupture remains unclear. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of quercetin on stabilizing atherosclerotic plaques.METHODS: Thirty-two Wistar rats were objected to a high-fat diet, along with an endothelial injury procedure conducted during the second week to create atherosclerotic plaque models. After six weeks, the subjects were randomly assigned to five groups consist of two control groups and three treatment groups treated with different quercetin dosages. Following the treatment, all subjects were euthanized to collect the left common carotid artery. The stability of the atherosclerotic plaques was evaluated by measuring the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) using real-time polymerase chain reaction, assessing the activity of M1 and M2 macrophages along with the M1/M2 ratio using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and determining the maximum intima thickness through histopathological examination.RESULTS: Quercetin significantly reduced the expression of MMP-9, increased the activity of M2 macrophages, and lowered the M1/M2 ratio at doses of 10 and 50 mg/kg. However, there was no effect on M1 macrophage activity or maximum intima thickness. Path analysis indicated that quercetin primarily enhanced atherosclerotic plaque stability by reducing MMP-9 expression (p<0.001) and subsequently enhancing M2 macrophage activity (p=0.002).CONCLUSION: Quercetin administration significantly decreased the expression of MMP-9, enhanced the activity of M2 macrophages, and lowered the M1/M2 ratio at specific doses. These findings emphasize the significance of quercetin in stabilizing atherosclerotic plaques.KEYWORDS: atherosclerotic plaque, quercetin, stability, Wistar rats

Abstract

The transition from Early Childhood Education (PAUD) to Elementary School (SD) is a crucial stage in a child’s development, involving social and emotional adjustments as well as adaptation to a more complex curriculum. This study aims to explore and understand the strategies implemented to support the PAUD–SD transition at SD Negeri 5 Rambang. The main focus of this research is on the application of effective transition strategies, which include environmental adaptation and the development of children’s social skills. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation to gain an in-depth understanding of the transition process. The findings are expected to provide insights into the importance of fulfilling the developmental foundations of children—cognitive, social, emotional, and psychomotor—and to offer practical recommendations for teachers and parents in preparing children to face more formal and complex education settings.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of the learning environment on students' learning outcomes in the Science and Social Studies (IPAS) subject for fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 230 Palembang. The research employed a quantitative approach with an experimental method, specifically using a True Experimental Design in the form of a Posttest-Only Control Design. The research subjects included two fourth-grade classes from different academic years: 2020/2021 and 2024/2025, each consisting of 28 students. The independent variable in this study is the learning environment, while the dependent variable is students' learning outcomes in the IPAS subject. Learning outcomes were assessed through semester report card scores, and students' perceptions of the learning environment were measured using a questionnaire. The findings revealed that the average report card score for the 2020/2021 class was 81.29, which is categorized as "Good", whereas the average score for the 2024/2025 class was 89.68, categorized as "Very Good". Additionally, the questionnaire results indicated that 81.67% of students in the 2024/2025 class rated the learning environment as "Very Attractive". These results suggest a significant improvement in learning outcomes corresponding with enhancements in the learning environment. The majority of students showed clear satisfaction and strong adaptation to the improved learning environment. Abstract

The 48-hour postpartum period is the ideal time to choose contraception because ovulation can occur 34 days postpartum for mothers who are not breastfeeding optimally. Audio-visual contraceptive education is provided during pregnancy to facilitate contraceptive use during the 48-hour postpartum period. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge levels after audio-visual education and contraceptive use during the 48-hour postpartum period. It also aims to identify contraceptive method use during the 48-hour postpartum period. This study is a pre-experimental study with a one-group post-test only design involving 30 pregnant women in the third trimester with a gestational age of ≥ 36 weeks, selected through consecutive sampling. The intervention was provided in the form of audio-visual education. Knowledge levels were measured using a questionnaire after the intervention. Postpartum contraceptive use was identified using medical records. The relationship between knowledge levels after the intervention and contraceptive use during the 48-hour postpartum period was measured using a chi-square test, yielding a p-value of 0.002, indicating a significant association between knowledge after the audio-visual education intervention and contraceptive use during the 48-hour postpartum perio. One of the key components of the Childbirth Planning and Complication Prevention Programme (P4K) is education about contraception during pregnancy. Family planning counselling and contraceptive methods during pregnancy can increase mothers' awareness of contraceptive use.

Abstract

Partus prematurus imminens (PPI) was a condition that threatened preterm labor, marked by labor signs before term (20 to <37 weeks) and birth weight under 2500 grams. Management included rest, hydration, and pharmacological measures. One approach used to delay labor was tocolytic therapy, such as ketoprofen suppositories, to inhibit uterine contractions. This study aimed to analyze the difference in uterine contractions before and after the administration of ketoprofen suppositories in women at risk of preterm labor. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test without a control group. The sample included 30 pregnant women with PPI who met the inclusion criteria. Consecutive sampling was used. The intervention administered was ketoprofen suppository therapy, 200 mg (2 tablets) given rectally. Data were collected using an observation sheet and analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results showed that the mean uterine contraction score before therapy was 2,17, which decreased to 1,20 after therapy. There was a statistically significant difference in uterine contractions before and after the intervention. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test resulted in a p-value of 0,001 (p ≤ 0,05). The findings indicated a significant difference in uterine contractions before and after the administration of ketoprofen suppositories in pregnant women at risk of preterm labor. Ketoprofen suppository therapy was effective in reducing uterine contractions in pregnant women at risk of preterm labor, with routine fetal monitoring ensuring the safety of the intervention.

Abstract

Chemotherapy causes the death of some cells that have been formed from the process of DNA, RNA or protein synthesis. The myelosuppressive effects of long-term chemotherapy treatment will continue throughout the therapy cycle such as infection, septicemia and spontaneous bleeding and worsening of anemia. This study aims to determine the factors that influence the occurrence of anemia in cisplatin chemotherapy patients. This study used an analytical observational design with a retrospective cross-sectional approach (medical records). The population was 394 patients with a sample of 136 with a simple random sampling technique. Data were obtained from medical records and supporting examination results, then summarized and tabulated according to the coding. Data analysis used the chi square test. The results of this study obtained 86 patients who experienced anemia and as many as 136 cases of anemia with 35 patients experiencing recurrent anemia. The p value in the chi-square test for age with the occurrence of anemia was (p = 0.026), the p value in the chemotherapy series (p = 0.011), the p value in leukopenia with anemia (0.000), the p value in thrombocytosis (p = 0.004). The use of chemotherapy with cisplating has a significant relationship with anemia in patients with Ca Cervix IIIA - IVA. The use of chemotherapy with cisplatin has a significant relationship between age, leukopenia levels, thrombocytosis levels, and the series of chemotherapy used in the occurrence of anemia. So that chemotherapy can cause damage to the spinal cord, so that it fails to produce red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in the blood.

Abstract

Pekan Sawah Village is located in Sei Bingei District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra Province. This village is 75 km from the city of Medan, which can be reached using a four-wheeled vehicle in 1.5 hours with the asphalt road conditions that are quite good. The residents of Pekan Sawah Village are generally the Karo tribe, which covers 80% of the total population. In general, the population is now doing business with oil palm, rubber, and only a small portion of them still maintains land farming businesses such as corn, long beans, etc. The high number of oil palm planters, which reaches 80% of the population, causes high unemployment in this village. This is because the work to carry out maintenance to harvest is very limited. But on the other hand there is oil palm leaf midrib waste which is a result of the castration process and or the oil palm fruit harvesting process itself. This waste is now made into sticks, which are then sold per kilo to the estimator, which is increasingly expensive and the available stock is very limited, while market demand is high. However, the residents experienced problems in trying to separate the sticks from the leaves. Work is done conventionally one by one so it takes a long time. This results in low productivity of sticks in this area. The entry of the USU Community Services Implementation Team raises new hopes for the community to be able to find solutions that are faced by this community. Complaints about the production of oil palm stick broomsticks were immediately raised by the traditional leaders in Pekan Sawah Village. The USU Community Services Implementation Team immediately formed a problem-solving team. Several lecturers were involved in this activity, including providing education on the correct disposal of palm oil waste for residents. This activity is also assisted by 5 students who have been trained to take action to solve this problem. Now the people of Pekan Sawah Village can increase their lid production using this stick machine.

Abstract

Until now, it seems that electricity is still a challenge in Indonesia, there are still many who have not enjoyed electricity for those who live in suburban or coastal areas, and some are located not far from cities. The target area is relatively close to the center of the capital, but has escaped the attention of the government because the location is quite remote with a minimal population, so it is considered uneconomical to provide electricity to this area. This hamlet is also inhabited by less than 18 families, so that only those with an interest are left in and out of this hamlet. The remote location from one house to another makes the construction of the electricity network no longer efficient for State Electricity Company. Therefore, people must be willing to live without electricity. Lighting as a basic need must be met from an oil lamp (sentir). Some residents who have a few advantages will buy individual generators. This generator only operates from 06.30 pm to 09.00 pm. After entering the sleep time, the generator is immediately turned off, the lighting is continued using an oil lamp. The emergence of the USU Community Services Implementing Team to this partner area provided new hope for the community. The community enthusiastically complained about this condition and hoped that the USU Community Services Implementation Team could help with these residents' problems. The results of monitoring by the Community Services Implementing Team at several residents 'houses proved the residents' complaints. Electric lighting as a basic need for residents is believed to be able to be completed using existing knowledge at the university in the form of lighting using solar power. Science and Technology The USU Community Services Team through the joining program has now produced economical science and technology products and realizes the expectations of the people in this region. Now people can enjoy light for 24 hours using electricity from solar energy. The community would like to thank the team and university for the scientific products that were donated to this village.
