Abstract

Decubitus ulcers in the elderly arise from prolonged pressure, reduced mobility, and skin compromise, increasing morbidity and costs. Risk assessment includes clinical tools like the Braden Scale and biochemical markers such as lipid profiles and apolipoproteins. Age-related vascular and skin changes, along with lipid imbalances, further influence ulcer risk. To evaluate the relationship between lipid panel components and the risk of decubitus ulcers in elderly residents at Bina Bhakti Nursing Home using the Braden Scale. A cross-sectional analytic study included 93 elderly participants aged over 60 years. Lipid profiles were measured via enzymatic and immunoturbidimetric assays, including HDL, LDL, triglycerides, total cholesterol, ApoA, and ApoB, alongside their ratios. The Braden Scale was employed to assess ulcer risk. Non-parametric Spearman correlation and multiple regression analyses were conducted using SPSS version 26 to identify significant predictors, with statistical significance set at p<0.05. Significant positive correlations were found between decubitus ulcer risk and ApoA (p=0.024), ApoB (p=0.023), total cholesterol (p=0.033), and LDL (p=0.013). Conversely, age showed a significant negative correlation (p=0.027). Lipid ratios, including ApoB/ApoA and triglyceride/HDL, did not demonstrate statistical significance. Multiple regression highlighted ApoB, ApoB/ApoA ratio, and LDL/ApoA ratio as independent predictors, emphasizing their role in vascular health and tissue integrity. Elevated ApoB and unfavorable lipid ratios are key predictors of increased decubitus ulcer risk, likely due to their contribution to endothelial dysfunction and impaired circulation. Addressing lipid imbalances through targeted interventions could enhance tissue health and reduce ulcer susceptibility in the elderly population.

Abstract

Hypertension is a major health problem in the elderly that contributes to an increased risk of morbidity and mortality due to cardiovascular disease and other complications. Early detection of hypertension is very important to prevent serious complications and improve the quality of life of the elderly. This community service activity was carried out at Panti Werdha Hana, Babakan, South Tangerang, involving 36 elderly people (7 men and 29 women). The methods used included socialization about hypertension and the importance of early detection, as well as blood pressure screening using a calibrated digital tensiometer. The screening results showed that 22.22% of participants had hypertension, 63.89% pre-hypertension, and 13.89% had normal blood pressure. Education about healthy lifestyle modifications was given to participants who were at risk or had hypertension. This activity emphasized the importance of blood pressure screening and education as a strategy to prevent hypertension in the elderly. With early detection and appropriate intervention, the risk of hypertension complications can be minimized so that the quality of life of the elderly increases. Abstract

Hyperuricemia is a condition characterized by elevated uric acid levels in the blood, which can increase the risk of chronic kidney failure due to the deposition of uric acid crystals in renal tissue. Education and screening for uric acid levels are crucial for the early detection and prevention of hyperuricemia, particularly in the adult population. This community service program utilized the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) approach, encompassing counseling on risk factors of hyperuricemia, uric acid level screening with Point Of Care Testing (POCT), and education on strategies to prevent chronic kidney disease. The activity involved 40 participants of productive age, with an average age of 43.97 years. The mean uric acid level was recorded at 5.74 mg/dL. Educational interventions successfully increased participants’ awareness of the importance of maintaining uric acid levels within normal limits. Routine screening enables early identification of at-risk individuals and facilitates timely implementation of preventive measures. This program highlights the importance of public education and early detection in reducing the risk of chronic kidney disease and underscores the role of preventive health efforts in improving overall quality of life. Abstract

Imbalance in skin surface water and oil levels serves as an early indicator of skin barrier disruption, particularly in populations residing in tropical climates. Assessing these parameters can effectively raise public awareness regarding the importance of hydration in maintaining skin integrity. This community activity was conducted among adults at St. Francis of Assisi Church, South Jakarta. Skin hydration and oil levels were measured using a portable digital skin analyzer, followed by group education through visual posters emphasizing the role of adequate fluid intake in supporting skin health. A total of 65 participants were assessed. The mean water content was 44.45%, oil content 21%, and the average hydration index was 49.3. While most participants fell within the neutral range, over one-third exhibited low water or oil levels, indicating a potential risk for impaired skin moisture balance. Skin hydration and sebum levels reflect the homeostatic condition of the skin surface, which is closely linked to systemic fluid adequacy. Education based on individual examination results provides a tangible understanding of the role of hydration in preserving skin barrier function, and may support behavioral change toward better fluid management and skin care. Abstract

Hyperuricemia, characterized by elevated serum uric acid levels, is a health issue that has the potential to cause serious complications such as urinary tract stones and kidney disorders, particularly in the productive-age population. This community service program was implemented using the PDCA method in Danau Sunter, North Jakarta, involving 49 adult participants. The activities included uric acid level screening through blood tests, result analysis, and educational sessions on the prevention and management of hyperuricemia. The screening results showed that all participants had uric acid levels within the normal range. The educational intervention aimed to raise awareness about the importance of a healthy lifestyle in preventing long-term complications. This program demonstrates that screening and education can be effective strategies for the early detection and prevention of urinary tract stones and for maintaining kidney health among productive-age individuals. Abstract

Elevated triglyceride levels are a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which remains one of the leading causes of death in Indonesia and globally. Screening for triglyceride levels among the productive-age population is essential for early detection and prevention of cardiovascular complications. This community service activity involved 49 adult participants in Danau Sunter, North Jakarta, where triglyceride level screening was conducted through blood tests by professional health workers. The screening results revealed that 46.94% of participants had elevated triglyceride levels, indicating a substantial risk for metabolic disorders and cardiovascular disease. Participants with high triglyceride levels received education on lifestyle modifications and appropriate preventive measures. This activity effectively identified individuals at risk for hypertriglyceridemia and increased community awareness of the importance of maintaining cardiovascular health through routine screening and lifestyle changes. Abstract

ABSTRACT Depression in the elderly is a multifaceted issue influenced by various physiological factors. This study investigates the correlation between muscle strength, calf circumference, Vitamin D, and Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) levels and their collective impact on depression among the elderly.  This study aims to understand the correlation between muscle strength, calf circumference, Vitamin D, and IGF-1 levels on depression to develop targeted interventions to improve mental health outcomes in this demographic. This cross-sectional study involved 82 older people at RPTRA Krendang. Depression is measured using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Data were analyzed using Spearman's Rho to see the Correlation between Muscle Strength, Calf Circumference, Vitamin D, and IGF-1 on Depression in the Elderly. The study found most respondents were female (78%), with an average age of 74.34 years, and according to the Geriatric Depression Scale, the majority (59.8%) of respondents were normal. This study highlighted significant correlations between muscle strength, calf circumference, and decreased Vitamin D and IGF-1 levels with higher depression scores. These findings suggest that diminished physical health markers and nutrient deficiencies are associated with increased depressive symptoms in the elderly. Measuring muscle strength, calf circumference, Vitamin D, and IGF-1 levels is a good approach to understanding depression in the elderly that will lead to effective interventions by health workers and improve quality of life. Keywords: Calf Circumference; Depression; IGF-1; Muscle Strength; Vitamin D.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Handgrip strength (HGS) is an essential biomarker of muscle strength and physical health, with links to illnesses like cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and frailty. It is particularly important in aging populations, where physical strength promotes independence and quality of life. Blood glucose, uric acid, and lipid profiles all impact metabolic health, influencing physical performance. Elevated glucose levels, disturbed uric acid metabolism, and aberrant lipid profiles lead to impaired muscle function and increased cardiovascular risk. When combined with age-related alterations such as sarcopenia and metabolic dysregulation, these markers have an even greater impact on HGS. This study investigates the association between these metabolic markers and HGS, hypothesizing that aberrant profiles are associated with lower HGS, independent of age. This cross-sectional study in West Jakarta included 120 adults tested for handgrip strength, hemoglobin, blood sugar, uric acid, cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, and the triglycerides-to-HDL ratio. Results showed positive correlations between HGS and hemoglobin, hematocrit, and blood sugar, highlighting their roles in oxygen transport and energy provision. The triglycerides-to-HDL ratio also correlated positively with HGS, indicating the influence of lipid metabolism on muscle performance. Age showed an inverse correlation with HGS, consistent with sarcopenia. This study examines the relationship between physiological factors and handgrip strength in the elderly, stressing the importance of optimizing hemoglobin, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. Abstract

Pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan deteksi dini hipertensi melalui skrining tekanan darah sebagai intervensi promotif-preventif dalam mengurangi risiko komplikasi kardiometabolik pada populasi lansia di Jakarta Selatan. Metode pengabdian yang digunakan meliputi edukasi kesehatan terkait hipertensi dan faktor risikonya, skrining tekanan darah menggunakan prosedur standar, serta konseling dan rujukan bagi peserta dengan tekanan darah tinggi, yang diselenggarakan melalui siklus Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA). Hasil pengabdian menunjukkan bahwa dari 99 partisipan, 44,4% memiliki tekanan darah normal, 17,2% prehipertensi, dan 38,4% hipertensi, dengan mayoritas peserta perempuan dan rerata usia 71,85 tahun. Simpulan, skrining tekanan darah berbasis komunitas efektif meningkatkan deteksi dini hipertensi, meningkatkan kesadaran peserta terhadap faktor risiko, serta berpotensi mengurangi risiko komplikasi kardiometabolik, sehingga mendukung strategi promotif-preventif kesehatan masyarakat.
