Abstract

The limited application of varied, contextual teaching methods in Fikih learning has led to a gap in students' ability to connect religious concepts with real-life situations, limiting the development of 21st-century skills. This study investigates the implementation of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model in Fikih education at Madrasah Aliyah and its effectiveness in enhancing students’ critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with a principal, one Fikih teacher, and students, as well as document analysis. Data were analyzed using thematic coding and triangulation to ensure validity. Findings reveal that CTL was implemented through key stages including constructivism, inquiry, questioning, learning communities, modeling, reflection, and authentic assessment. Students showed improved engagement, deeper understanding of Fikih concepts, and increased ability to relate them to contemporary social issues. Challenges identified include varying student abilities and time constraints, which were addressed through differentiated instruction, teacher creativity, and stakeholder collaboration. The study concludes that CTL is an effective pedagogical model for Islamic education, particularly in fostering 21st-century competencies in Fikih learning. It highlights the need for continuous professional development for teachers, integration of authentic assessments, and the use of real-life contexts in religious instruction. Broader implementation of CTL is recommended to support holistic student development in Madrasah environments.

Abstract

This study examines how Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) adherents in Minangkabau negotiate and transform their religious traditions within a socio-cultural context in which NU lacks symbolic dominance. NU is widely known for integrating Islamic tradition with local culture, yet this accommodative model does not operate uniformly across regions. In Minangkabau, the supremacy of adat basandi syarak, syarak basandi Kitabullah shapes religious legitimacy and constrains the public expression of NU traditions. This qualitative field study employs an interpretive–critical paradigm, using in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis in West Pasaman Regency. The findings reveal that NU religious practices are selectively enacted and symbolically moderated to preserve social harmony. NU identity is also mobilized instrumentally for social, political, and educational purposes, functioning as flexible symbolic capital. Additionally, pesantren traditions are transmitted to younger generations primarily through ethical values, leadership development, and civic engagement rather than through consistent ritual practice. These dynamics produce what this study conceptualizes as “half-hearted devotion,” a strategic form of adaptive religiosity rather than religious decline. This research contributes to studies of lived Islam and Islam Nusantara by highlighting negotiation and ambivalence as mechanisms of continuity and by recommending a balance between flexibility and efforts to sustain embodied religious traditions.

Abstract

This learning model is considered an efficient learning model to be used in implementing learning. with data sources, namely teachers teaching Islamic Religious Education subjects and students at SDN 14 ATTS Bukittinggi City. The results of the research show that the Contextual Teaching and Learning learning model starts from learning planning including designing the Learning Implementation Plan by the teacher then implementing learning which is carried out systematically and structured in accordance with the learning plan, then assessment instruments which include three aspects of assessment, namely assessment of activeness, assessment assignments and assessment of student attendance. Students' perceptions of the CTL learning model in grade IV Islamic Religious Education at SDN 14 ATTS Bukittinggi City, namely, 85% of students Strongly Agree (SS) with learning using this CTL model. Meanwhile, 15% of other students chose to agree with this CTL learning model. Disagree (TS) 0%. It can be concluded that the majority of students chose Strongly Agree (SS), namely 85%. This proves that using the CTL model can make students more active and enthusiastic in the learning process. The obstacle to implementing the CTL learning model in Islamic Religious Education is that there are inclusive children in the class where it is difficult for these children to think actively like other general children.

Abstract

The rationale behind this study stems from the fact that MTsN 5 Pasaman is still having issues with differentiated learning implementation. Specifically, teachers are still struggling to map students' learning styles accurately, implement the program in a way that meets students' needs, and maximizes learning outcomes. The aim of this study is to investigate the application, implementation, and differentiated learning results in Al-Qur'an Hadith courses at MTsN 5 Pasaman's autonomous curriculum. Data gathering, data reduction, data presentation, and data verification are the methods of data analysis that are used. The research's findings demonstrate how differentiated learning is implemented in the independent curriculum for Al-Qur'an Hadith subjects at MTsN 5 Pasaman. Specifically, learning styles are mapped out in the learning planning process, and learning needs are accommodated based on students' learning styles. The effectiveness of differentiated learning is evaluated through diagnostic tests.

Abstract

This study examines cultural responsiveness through the synergy of Maqashid al-Shariah and Rahmatan Lil 'Alamin for university students. Empirical data indicate that consistent religious practice has decreased to 50.5%, despite the widespread adoption of moderation. This gap is exacerbated by cognitive repetition and a disconnect between theoretical concepts and the realities of campus life. As a result, religious literacy remains stagnant and fails to translate into meaningful social “praxis.” To address this issue, a systemic reorientation is proposed, utilizing Jasser Auda's Maqashid al-Shariah framework as an adaptive value filter to navigate modern cultural disruptions. This study employs a qualitative descriptive design, grounded in a humanistic systems approach, to explore student perceptions. The primary subjects are PAI (Islamic Religious Education) students at Universitas Islam Negeri Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar. Data were collected through reflective interviews and observations, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The findings show that students frequently adopt hedonistic digital trends, such as “cultural show-offs,” rather than religious principles for social validation. While 53.6% recognize the fundamental right to worship, maintaining consistency in religious practice remains a challenge amidst academic pressures. Additionally, participants exhibited 60.8% social empathy but lacked effective religious coping mechanisms to manage the psychological stress of culture shock. Despite their strong academic focus, 84.5% of students acknowledge the need for critical religious literacy to effectively filter misinformation in the digital world. This study highlights that synergizing Maqashid al-Shariah with Rahmatan Lil 'Alamin offers a robust defense against moral decline and radicalism. Ultimately, this framework revitalizes Islamic education, transforming it into a dynamic guide for promoting universal well-being and inclusive social harmony.

Abstract

This study examines the political-social historiography of Islamic education in Minangkabau, focusing on the transmission of knowledge and the concept of talaqqī in the formation of the Islamic scholarly tradition in the Indonesian archipelago. The study aims to trace, reconstruct, and interpret the historical dynamics of Islamic education in Minangkabau within the context of socio-politics and the transmission of knowledge. This study adopts a qualitative approach with historiography and literature review. Through a historical-critical literature review approach, this study analyzes the dynamics of Islamic education from the 17th to the 20th century, starting from the traditional surau system to modern madrasahs such as Sumatera Thawalib and Diniyah School. The results of the study show that Islamic education in Minangkabau not only functions as a religious institution but also as a socio-political arena in shaping the intellectual awareness and Islamic identity of the community. The concept of talaqqī becomes the epistemological foundation of knowledge transmission, which guarantees the authority and blessings of knowledge through the spiritual relationship between teacher and student. In the modern context, talaqqī has been recontextualized into a system of values and scientific ethics that is relevant to the development of contemporary Islamic education. This study confirms that Islamic education in Minangkabau is a manifestation of the dialectic between tradition and modernity, as well as an integrative model of Islamic education based on sanad, spirituality, and rationality.

Abstract

This study examines the contribution of Muslim scholars to the transformation of Islamic Education in Indonesia by highlighting two main forms of work: physical work in the form of establishing institutions, curricula, and infrastructure, as well as non-physical work in the form of ideas, methodologies, and educational ethics. Through a systematic literature review approach, this study found that the synergy between the institutional and intellectual dimensions built by figures such as KH. Ahmad Dahlan, KH. Hasyim Asy'ari, Nurcholish Madjid, Azyumardi Azra, Haedar Nashir, and Quraish Shihab became an important foundation for the renewal of Islamic Religious Education. Physical works provide an implementative space for strengthening the values of religious moderation and digital literacy, while non-physical works form a framework of ethics and rationality in modern Islamic learning. The results of the analysis show that the integration of moderation, digitalization, and Artificial Intelligence in Islamic Religious Education expands the function of religious education as a means of forming an inclusive and civilized society. However, methodological limitations in existing studies require a longitudinal and mixed methods approach to verify the causal relationship between intellectual ideas and the transformation of Islamic education. In practical terms, this study recommends strengthening empirical research on Islamic Religious Education, providing digital ethics training for educators, and promoting collaboration among universities in developing a values-based and technology-based Islamic curriculum.

Abstract

This study analyzes the historical and contemporary dynamics of the Islamic Tarbiyah Association (PERTI) as a religious organization deeply rooted in the educational tradition of the Islamic Tarbiyah Madrasah (MTI) in Minangkabau. MTI, a product of the transformation of traditional surau (Islamic prayer hall) in the early 20th century, forms the epistemological, pedagogical, and ideological foundation for PERTI. Through a qualitative approach with a historical-sociological design, this study traces the evolution of PERTI from its emergence as a consolidation of older scholars to its development as a modern organization that plays a role in the educational, social, and religious fields of society. The research findings indicate that the religious identity of Ahlussunnah wal Jama'ah and the Shafi'i school of thought, the tradition of the yellow book, and active learning methods such as munazharah and mudzakarah are the pillars of PERTI's intellectual character. Furthermore, PERTI's close relationship with the Minangkabau social structure, particularly through the adat principle of basandi syarak, syarak basandi Kitabullah, provides strong legitimacy for its social role. This study confirms that PERTI's ability to maintain tradition while adapting to the demands of modernization is key to the organization's sustainability. The results of this study contribute to enriching studies on traditional Islamic education and local religious organizations in Indonesia.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to analyze the transformation of the Islamic curriculum in the Indonesian archipelago during the Dutch and Japanese colonial periods. The study focuses on the influence of colonial policies on the direction, structure, and content of the curriculum in Islamic boarding schools, prayer rooms, and madrasas, as well as the role of Islamic ethnopedagogy in preserving the character of Islamic education based on tradition and local wisdom. Methodology: This study uses a qualitative-historical approach with heuristic, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography stages. Data were obtained from colonial archives, education regulations, curriculum documents, textbooks, and national and international scientific journals. All sources were described in a historical-critical and ethnopedagogical manner to identify changes in the objectives, structure, content, and value orientation of the Islamic education curriculum in the colonial socio-cultural context. Main Findings: The results show that Dutch colonial policy was repressive and restricted Islamic educational institutions and curricula, while Japan was more cooperative, albeit oriented towards the interests of the war. These differences in policy led to significant changes in institutional structure and curriculum content. In this context, Islamic ethnopedagogical values based on local traditions played an important role in maintaining the Islamic identity of the archipelago's communities. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study is unique in that it places the Islamic education curriculum as the main focus of analysis in the colonial context using an Islamic ethnopedagogy approach. Unlike previous studies that emphasized institutional aspects or colonial policies, this study shows the integration of local Islamic cultural values in the curriculum as a strategy for pedagogical adaptation and resistance, as well as its contribution to the development of a local wisdom-based Islamic curriculum.
