Abstract

Coronary heart disease (CHD) in the elderly represents the primary clinical manifestation of atherosclerosis and remains a leading cause of death and morbidity. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the role of High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL), Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL), Apolipoprotein-A (APO-A), and Apolipoprotein-B (APO-B) in the diagnosis and prevention of CHD among the elderly population. The results demonstrated that both APO-A and HDL were significantly negatively correlated with CHD (r = -0.336, p = 0.008; r = -0.274, p = 0.032), suggesting that higher levels of APO-A and HDL are associated with a lower risk of CHD. Conversely, APO-B and LDL showed a significant positive correlation with CHD (r = 0.411, p = 0.001; r = 0.358, p = 0.005), indicating that elevated levels of APO-B and LDL are linked to an increased risk of CHD. These findings highlight that measuring Apolipoprotein A and B levels may offer more valuable insights into atherosclerotic and cardiovascular risk assessment and may enhance the effectiveness of CHD prevention compared to traditional lipid profiles.

Abstract

Falls among older adults and individuals with chronic conditions pose a major public health concern, leading to injuries, reduced quality of life, and increased healthcare costs. Identifying modifiable risk factors is crucial for prevention. Muscle strength, particularly in the lower extremities, and renal function, measured by glomerular filtration rate (GFR), are potential predictors of fall risk. Sarcopenia and chronic kidney disease (CKD) exacerbate muscle weakness, impairing balance and mobility. While the Morse Fall Scale (MFS) assesses clinical and environmental risks, it lacks physiological measures like muscle strength and renal function. This study aims to bridge this gap by examining associations between muscle strength, GFR, and fall risk, enhancing fall risk assessments and contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of fall prevention. This cross-sectional study at Bina Bakti Nursing Home was done in 2024 examined muscle strength, GFR, and fall risk in 93 elderly (≥60 years). Participants provided consent; those with incomplete data were excluded. Partial correlation analysis showed strong right-left grip strength correlation (p < 0.001) but no significant associations with Morse Fall Scale scores (p = 0.058, p = 0.093), suggesting grip strength alone poorly predicts fall risk. This study confirms grip strength as a reliable muscle function measure but not a strong fall risk predictor. Age plays a dominant role, necessitating fall prevention strategies integrating balance, mobility, cognition, and environment. Renal function did not directly influence fall risk but may contribute indirectly through frailty, warranting further investigation.

Abstract

Urinary incontinence (UI) significantly impacts the quality of life in older adults, often resulting from multifactorial causes, including age-related changes and systemic health issues. Emerging evidence highlights the role of lipid metabolism in influencing bladder and pelvic floor function through vascular integrity, inflammation control, and tissue repair. Lipid parameters, such as apolipoproteins, HDL, LDL, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and their ratios, provide insights into metabolic health and its association with UI. This study aims to identify specific lipid-related predictors, advancing the understanding of metabolic factors in UI and informing targeted prevention and management strategies for aging populations. This study used multiple linear regression analysis to assess the relationship between lipid panel predictors and urinary incontinence in 93 elderly respondents at Bina Bakti Nursing Home. The analysis identifies apolipoprotein B, Apo B/Apo A ratio, total cholesterol, and triglyceride-to-HDL ratio as significant predictors. These variables actively influence urinary incontinence through metabolic and vascular pathways, with both positive and negative associations. Apolipoprotein B, Apo B/Apo A ratio, total cholesterol, and triglyceride-to-HDL ratio predict urinary incontinence, highlighting lipid-related impacts on vascular health, inflammation, and tissue integrity for improved risk stratification.

Abstract

Hypertriglyceridemia is an indicator of lipid metabolism disorders that contributes to increased cardiometabolic risk and often remains undetected among adults. This condition may increase the likelihood of developing chronic diseases, including coronary heart disease, metabolic syndrome, and vascular disorders if not identified at an early stage. This community service program aimed to conduct triglyceride screening as an early detection effort using the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) approach. A total of 98 adult participants with a mean age of 43.67±12.40 years were involved in the activity. Triglyceride measurements were performed to identify metabolic conditions within the community and provide an initial overview of potential health risks. The results showed a mean triglyceride level of 147.65±82.39 mg/dL, with a median of 123 mg/dL and a range of 45–464 mg/dL, indicating considerable variability among participants. Categorically, 65.3% of respondents were classified as having normal triglyceride levels, while 34.7% were identified with hypertriglyceridemia. The wide distribution of values, including several extreme results, reflects heterogeneity in metabolic conditions within the community. These findings indicate that triglyceride disorders represent a significant health concern among adults. Therefore, community-based screening programs should be implemented continuously and followed by promotive and preventive interventions, including dietary modification, increased physical activity, and weight management, to reduce cardiometabolic risk and support better public health outcomes.

Abstract

Liver function disorders often occur subclinically and remain undetected among adults, despite their potential to progress into chronic liver disease if not identified early. This community service program aimed to conduct liver function screening through the assessment of transaminase enzymes, namely Serum Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase (SGOT) and Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase (SGPT), as an early detection effort using the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) approach. A total of 98 adult participants were involved, with a mean age of 43.67±12.40 years, and the majority were female (54.3%). Laboratory examination results showed mean SGOT and SGPT levels of 26.05±7.57 U/L and 27.97±8.19 U/L, respectively, which generally remained within the normal range. However, the distribution of SGOT and SGPT values demonstrated considerable variability among participants, indicating heterogeneity in liver health conditions within the population. These findings suggest that although most participants exhibited normal liver enzyme levels, there is still a possibility of subclinical liver function changes in some individuals that require further attention. Community-based screening has proven to be an effective strategy for early detection of liver health risks. Therefore, such activities should be followed by promotive and preventive interventions, including metabolic risk factor control, healthy dietary practices, increased physical activity, and health education to maintain optimal liver function and prevent the progression of liver disease in the future.

Abstract

Hypertriglyceridemia is an important risk factor for cardiometabolic disorders that often remains undetected among adults, despite contributing to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and other metabolic complications. This community service program aimed to conduct triglyceride screening as an early detection effort for metabolic risk using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach. A total of 109 adult participants with a mean age of 42.81 ± 13.55 years were involved in the activity. The results showed a mean triglyceride level of 162.13 ± 81.81 mg/dL with a median of 136 mg/dL (range 59-521 mg/dL), indicating considerable variation among participants. Categorically, 53.2% of respondents were within the normal range, while 46.8% were classified as having hypertriglyceridemia. Further analysis demonstrated a tendency for triglyceride levels to increase with age, although the association was relatively weak (R² = 0.037). These findings indicate a substantial proportion of individuals with elevated triglyceride levels in the community, highlighting the need for greater attention to metabolic health. Community-based screening proved effective as an early detection strategy for identifying metabolic risk factors. Therefore, follow-up promotive and preventive interventions are necessary, including dietary improvement, increased physical activity, weight management, and health education to reduce cardiometabolic risk and improve overall community health.

Abstract

Skin health is influenced by the balance of oil, water content, and hydration, which play important roles in maintaining the skin barrier function. This community service activity aimed to evaluate skin condition through measurements of skin oil, water content, and hydration as part of health education and early detection of skin problems. A total of 155 participants were involved, consisting mainly of adults and older individuals, with female participants predominating. The examination results showed mean values of 12.96 ± 7.52% for water content, 55.49 ± 7.38% for hydration, and 22.64 ± 3.13% for oil level. Based on gender, females demonstrated slightly higher mean oil and water levels than males, while males showed slightly higher skin hydration levels. These variations indicate that biological, hormonal, environmental, aging, and lifestyle factors influence skin condition in the community. Balanced skin oil and hydration are essential for maintaining skin elasticity, protective function, and prevention of dryness-related or inflammatory skin disorders. Community-based skin examinations combined with health education may improve public awareness regarding the importance of adequate hydration and proper skin care in maintaining optimal skin health.

Abstract

Hepatitis B remains a public health problem with the potential to cause chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Early detection through community-based screening is essential to improve case identification and prevent transmission. This community service activity aimed to conduct HBsAg screening and provide education regarding hepatitis B among the community. A total of 155 participants were involved, with a mean age of 46.49 ± 10.29 years and an age range of 19–80 years. Most participants were female, accounting for 109 individuals (70.3%), while males accounted for 46 individuals (29.7%). Screening results showed that 153 participants (98.7%) were HBsAg negative and 2 participants (1.3%) were HBsAg positive. Gender-based distribution demonstrated that all positive cases were found among female participants. The low proportion of HBsAg-positive results indicates that most screened individuals did not have active hepatitis B infection. Nevertheless, the identification of positive cases highlights the importance of regular screening and health education as strategies for early detection, prevention of liver disease complications, and control of hepatitis B transmission within the community.

Abstract

Anemia is a public health problem that can reduce work capacity, cognitive function, productivity, and quality of life, particularly among productive-age adults. Early detection through hemoglobin screening is essential to identify individuals at risk and support preventive and health promotion efforts. This community service activity aimed to describe hemoglobin levels as an early detection measure for anemia among productive-age adults. The activity was implemented using the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) approach, which included needs assessment and program preparation (Plan), hemoglobin screening and health education (Do), evaluation of screening results (Check), and provision of follow-up recommendations to participants (Act). A total of 45 participants underwent hemoglobin assessment using a simple screening method. Data were analyzed descriptively and presented as mean, median, frequency, and percentage. The mean age of participants was 34.69 ± 9.05 years, with females accounting for the majority of participants (36 individuals; 80.0%). The mean hemoglobin level was 14.51 ± 1.46 g/dL, with a median of 14.40 g/dL and a range of 9.60–16.90 g/dL. Most participants had normal hemoglobin levels (42 individuals; 93.3%), while anemia was identified in 3 participants (6.7%). These findings indicate that the overall hemoglobin status of the participants was generally good, although anemia was still detected in a small proportion of the population. Community-based hemoglobin screening using the PDCA approach was effective in supporting the early detection of anemia. Continuous education on balanced nutrition and adequate iron intake is recommended to prevent anemia and promote community health.

Abstract

Lung health during adolescence plays an important role in preventing chronic respiratory diseases later in life. This community service program aimed to improve students' knowledge of lung health while screening the risk of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) using the PUMA questionnaire. The program was conducted at St. Yoseph Junior High School using the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) approach, which integrated health education and respiratory risk assessment. Educational materials covered lung function, risk factors for respiratory diseases, the harmful effects of cigarette smoke and air pollution, and preventive strategies. A total of 170 students participated, with a mean age of 15.21 ± 0.64 years; 60.6% were male and 39.4% were female. Respiratory risk screening showed a mean PUMA score of 1.71 ± 1.24, with a median score of 1 (range 0–6). Most participants were classified as having a low risk of COPD, while only one student was identified as high risk. These findings indicate that adolescents generally have a low risk of chronic respiratory disease; however, continuous health education remains essential to encourage healthy lifestyles, reduce exposure to respiratory risk factors, and maintain optimal lung health from an early age. Community-based educational and screening programs can serve as effective preventive strategies for promoting respiratory health awareness among adolescents.
