Abstract

On Saturday, May 11, 2024, a natural disaster involving cold lahar floods and landslides occurred in Tanah Datar and Agam Regencies, West Sumatra Province. This disaster was triggered by high-intensity rainfall upstream of Mount Marapi, which caused rain-induced lahar flows. Moderate to heavy rainfall eroded and carried volcanic sediment deposits, forming lahar flows. The disaster caused significant damage, including destruction of infrastructure such as roads and bridges, public buildings like mosques and offices, residential houses, and loss of lives. In response to the disaster, Andalas University, through its Disaster Response Center Team from the Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM), conducted a site survey of the affected areas on Monday, May 13, 2024. This community service activity was carried out to assess the damaged infrastructure caused by the flash floods, providing solutions and recommendations for repair and reinforcement, and ensuring the infrastructure's usability post-disaster. This community service (PkM-P) activity was carried out using a comprehensive methodological approach employing field survey techniques. The survey was conducted to gain a clear understanding of the physical condition of the cliffs and their surrounding environment along the Padang-Bukittinggi national road at the coordinates 0°29'36"S 100°20'20"E, which are in a critical state following the Anai River flash flood. The activities included preparation and planning, field surveys, data collection and analysis, as well as reporting and recommendations. The assessment results indicated that the previously implemented methods failed to withstand the high flood pressure. Recommendations for repair and reinforcement include the construction of levees and stream diversions in the Anai River, road drainage systems, planting stronger vegetation, road realignment, and routine monitoring.

Abstract

On Saturday, May 11, 2024, a flash flood struck parts of West Sumatra, including Nagari Andaleh. This disaster drew significant attention from the government and educational institutions, which responded by organizing the Disaster Community Service Program - Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (KKN-MBKM Kebencanaan) in Nagari Andaleh. As part of this program, students and Field Supervisors (DPL) carried out Community Service Activities Integrated with Student Activities (PkM-TKM), which included socialization about flash flood evacuation and the creation of an evacuation map. The activities began with drafting evacuation materials, validating, creating the map, and conducting field verification. Once the map was finalized, students and DPL, supported by Civil Engineering lecturers from UNAND, conducted socialization and training sessions on post-disaster impacts, including actions and evacuation directions that the Nagari Andaleh community should follow during a disaster. The high level of community participation during the discussions demonstrated strong enthusiasm for such positive initiatives. The outcomes of these activities included increased preparedness and knowledge among the Nagari Andaleh community regarding emergency responses to flash floods, enabling more effective evacuations during such events. Additionally, the flash flood evacuation map produced from this initiative serves as an important reference for both the community and local government of Nagari Andaleh to minimize disaster risks in the future.

Abstract

The abundance of information sources is the result of rapid technological advances. Rapid technological advances must be balanced with reading skills, one of which is critical reading skills used to filter information sources. This systematic literature review aims to compare the findings of research articles published by the Science and Technology Index (SINTA). The keyword used to find articles in the SINTA database is "critical reading." The search results found 78 articles, then 23 articles were selected that met the criteria for analysis. The reporting items selected for the systematic literature review and meta-analysis were the inclusion and exclusion models. In the last ten years, the number of publications dominated in 2016 with six articles. The types of research used by researchers in reviewing critical reading skills are R & D, quantitative, qualitative, and CAR. The research subjects used by the researchers consisted of class X high school students, class VII junior high school students, class VIII junior high school students, fifth-grade elementary school students, and junior high school teachers. The publication and citation structure reveals that, out of 23 articles, they have been cited 114 times, with the 2016 publication having the most citations, a total of 46 times. Writers who have a track record of publications covering critical reading skills are (1) Nuria Reny Hariyati, (2) Hespi Septiana, and (3) Endah Tri Priyatni, all three of whom have a publication track record of 10 articles. The writing institutions are divided into two institutions, namely schools (13%) and colleges (87%), and the collaboration of writers shows a number that is quite far apart, where 14 authors collaborate and nine single authors. There are eight ideas for reflection by Indonesian teachers in teaching critical reading skills.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has significantly transformed patterns of communication and information consumption in society, including in the realm of character education. TikTok, as one of the most popular social media platforms today, serves not only as a source of entertainment but also holds potential as a medium for learning and character development. This study employs a library research approach with descriptive analysis. Data was collected through a comprehensive review of relevant literature on character education, social media, and TikTok content creators. Additionally, observations were conducted on TikTok videos containing educational and Islamic values, along with an analysis of media consumption patterns across different user groups. The findings reveal that TikTok content presents two contrasting dimensions: entertainment-oriented content that may lead to moral degradation, and educational content that can foster positive character traits. Adult users tend to be more autonomous in filtering content, whereas children and adolescents require intensive supervision. The role of parents and educators is crucial in guiding content consumption to ensure a positive impact on students’ character development. TikTok can be effectively utilized as a character-building medium when its use is directed wisely and accompanied by appropriate supervision. Collaboration among users, educators, and parents is essential to maximize TikTok’s educational potential.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the stress and strain distribution on the front planetary sun gear of a helical differential using the Finite Element Method (FEM). The analysis was carried out under two conditions: without a crack and with an initial crack of 1 mm placed at the tensile side tooth root, in order to evaluate the effect of defect presence on the mechanical behavior of the gear under an operational torque load of 175 Nm. Three-dimensional modeling and meshing were performed using ANSYS software, with SCM420 steel as the material, which has an allowable stress of 1,300 MPa. The simulation results show that the maximum stress in the uncracked model reached 8,859.6 MPa, while in the cracked model it increased to 15,258 MPa. Meanwhile, the maximum equivalent elastic strain increased from 4.437 × 10⁻² mm/mm to 1.154 × 10⁻¹ mm/mm. This significant increase indicates that the presence of an initial crack intensifies stress concentration and amplifies local deformation, potentially accelerating crack initiation and propagation due to the increased strain energy accumulated near the crack tip. Based on these findings, optimization of the fillet radius and the application of surface treatments such as shot peening or advanced carburizing are recommended to reduce peak stresses and extend gear fatigue life. The results of this study demonstrate that the FEM approach is effective in predicting structural behavior and serves as a basis for the development of reliability-based design and condition monitoring systems in modern automotive transmissions.

Abstract

Introduction: Based on medical record data from Undata Regional General Hospital (RSUD Undata) Palu, 120 cervical cancer (Ca cervix) cases received examination and medical treatment in 2023. This high number indicates that cervical cancer remains a major public health problem in Central Sulawesi. Objective: To analyze the risk factors associated with cervical cancer among women of reproductive age at RSUD Undata, Central Sulawesi Province, in 2024. Method: This quantitative study applied a cross-sectional design and was conducted at RSUD Undata Palu. The sample comprised 69 respondents selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were analyzed using univariate (frequency distribution) and multivariate (multiple linear regression) analyses. Results and Discussion: The analysis revealed that number of marriages (p=0.009), age at first pregnancy (p=0.035), number of children (p=0.000), smoking history (p=0.016), and clinical symptoms (p=0.018) significantly influenced cervical cancer risk. Conversely, age (p=0.727), body weight (p=0.850), ethnicity (p=0.103), menarche (p=0.786), and occupational history (p=0.596) showed no significant association. A greater number of children increased risk due to repeated cervical trauma and hormonal changes during pregnancy that facilitate persistent viral infection. Conclusion: The number of children, clinical symptoms, marital frequency, and smoking history had dominant effects on cervical cancer risk, while age and body weight had no direct influence. The regression model explained 43% of the variation in cervical cancer risk.
