Abstract

Plants of the Brassicaceae family display a highly complex and adaptive chemical defense system against biotic stresses, particularly herbivore attack. These defense mechanisms are physiologically based on the biosynthesis and activation of secondary metabolites, mainly glucosinolates, which are converted into toxic compounds such as isothiocyanates by the enzyme myrosinase upon tissue damage. This response is not only local, but also systemic, involving cross-interactions between roots and leaves, and is modulated by the hormones jasmonate (JA), salicylate (SA), and ethylene (ET). These complex interactions form a plant defense system that can be explicitly induced depending on the type and sequence of herbivore attack. In addition, molecular adaptation strategies, such as MYB gene expression, and engineering technologies, such as CRISPR/Cas9, have opened up opportunities to improve plant resistance. This study aims to analyze the physiological dynamics of Brassicaceae defense mechanisms, evaluate the role of hormonal and genetic regulation in enhancing plant resistance, and address the critical challenges posed by specialist herbivore adaptations and the socio-environmental implications of genetic engineering. By synthesizing these elements, this article presents a comprehensive review of the potential of these defense systems in advancing sustainable agriculture and promoting human health.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze how organizational culture and career development affect the quality of work life of assistant investigators at the Criminal Investigation Unit (Satreskrim) of the North Jakarta Metro Police. Research Methodology: A mixed-method approach with an explanatory sequential design was applied. Quantitative data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire with 45 items completed by 61 assistant investigators. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression, producing the equation ? = 5.104 + 0.999X1 + 0.367X2 + e. Instrument testing, classical assumption tests, and hypothesis testing were conducted. To deepen the findings, qualitative data were obtained through observation, interviews, and literature studies. Results: The study found that the quality of work life had the highest mean score (4.01), followed by organizational culture (3.90) and career development (3.72). The adjusted R² of 0.850 indicates that organizational culture and career development together explain 85% of the variance in quality of work life. Organizational culture positively and significantly influences involvement and mission clarity but reveals weaknesses in digital adaptability. Career development also has a significant effect, though training access remains uneven. Conclusions: Both organizational culture and career development significantly enhance the quality of work life of assistant investigators, with culture being slightly more dominant. Limitations: This study was limited to one police unit and may not fully represent other contexts. Contribution: Contribution: This research guides police institutions to enhance culture, digital readiness, and fair career development.

Abstract

This investigation aims to determine and assess the impact of leadership, work environment, and motivation on employee performance. The population for this study comprises the entire Makassar Religious Education and Training Center, consisting of 64 individuals: 58 employees and 6 NPASN personnel. The study's sample comprised 64 individuals from the Makassar Religious Education and Training Center, selected using census sampling. The data collection technique consisted of a questionnaire, with each respondent's responses evaluated using a Likert scale. This research uses structural equation modeling (SEM) and SmartPLS 3.0 for data analysis. SEM modeling is an extension of route analysis; using SEM, the causal relationship between exogenous and endogenous factors may be determined in greater detail. Not only can the causal links (direct and indirect) among the observed variables or constructs be recognized using SEM, but also the components that contribute to the production of the construct can be identified. Consequently, the causal relationship between variables or concepts becomes more informative, comprehensive, and precise. According to this study's findings, leadership and the work environment have a significant impact on employee performance. Leadership and the work environment do not affect motivation. Through explanation, leadership, and the work environment, there is no substantial effect on improving employee performance. Moreover, the rationale has a significant impact on employees' performance at the Makassar Religious Education and Training Center. This implies that if employee motivation grows, performance will also increase.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the use of a Waste-Oil-Fueled Furnace (WOFF) as an alternative heat source in the melting process of recycled Al-3004 aluminum. The melting was carried out using the sand casting method at a pouring temperature of approximately 730 °C, while measurements indicated the furnace could reach ±900 °C, exceeding the melting point of Al-3004 (±660 °C). The cast specimens were subsequently quenched in three media: water, oil, and air. Microstructural observations revealed that the cooling rate significantly affected crack formation: water quenching produced the largest cracks, oil quenching produced medium-sized cracks, and air cooling produced the finest cracks. Micro Vickers hardness testing supported these findings, showing significant differences in hardness values across the quenching media. Overall, the study confirms that the waste-oil-fueled furnace is an effective alternative energy-based metal-melting technology, while the choice of cooling medium plays a crucial role in controlling the material's microstructural features and mechanical properties.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research examines the role of online motorcycle taxi (ojek online) work in reducing unemployment and increasing people’s purchasing power in Makassar City. The research method employed in-depth interviews with seven informants consisting of five online motorcycle taxi drivers and two supporting informants selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis used the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model with stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the gig economy through online motorcycle taxi work has successfully absorbed a diverse workforce, in which 40% of drivers come from unemployed groups, 35% are workers who shifted professions, and 25% take it as a side job. The main driving factors include economic needs, flexible working hours, easy access with simple requirements, and technological application support. Economically, drivers earn IDR 100,000–200,000 per day or IDR 2–5 million per month, which has proven sufficient to meet basic family needs with a surplus for savings and increased purchasing power. The overall socioeconomic impacts are positive, including increased accessibility to urban mobility, the development of MSMEs through GoFood services that increase turnover by 40–60%, as well as the expansion of drivers’ social networks. Although there are challenges such as income fluctuations depending on weather and economic conditions and conflicts with conventional transportation modes, digital transformation in transportation has proven effective in addressing employment issues in the digital economy era. This research contributes to understanding how innovations in urban mobility create a sustainable economic ecosystem with low barriers to entry, while also driving the micro economy and improving the welfare of Makassar City residents through comprehensive implementation of the gig economy.

Abstract

Tourism is a strategic sector for regional development; however, the management of flagship destinations in developing regions frequently encounters challenges related to weak stakeholder coordination, limited infrastructure, and insufficient community participation. Karampuang Island in West Sulawesi possesses significant natural and cultural tourism potential, yet its development has not been optimally managed due to low inter-agency synergy and limited stakeholder engagement. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the pentahelix collaborative governance model, comprising government, private sector, academia, community or non-governmental organizations, and media, in the development of Karampuang Island as a tourism destination. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, using in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis. The findings indicate that cross-sector collaboration has contributed to improvements in accessibility and public facilities, as reflected in the construction of Plaza Karampuang and the establishment of twelve micro, small, and medium enterprise kiosks. Nevertheless, formal coordination mechanisms remain weak due to the absence of inter-agency memorandums of understanding, limiting sustained collaboration. Private sector involvement in promotion and investment is still minimal, while academic contributions are largely confined to community service programs. Community participation has increased through the Tourism Awareness Group, although communication with government actors remains suboptimal. Media actors have actively promoted the destination, yet digital marketing strategies have not been maximized. In conclusion, the pentahelix model has the potential to strengthen tourism governance on Karampuang Island, provided it is supported by formal coordination platforms, community capacity building, and integrated digital marketing strategies to ensure sustainable tourism development and local community welfare.
