Abstract

Abstract

High ambient temperatures in tropical regions contribute to increased energy consumption for indoor cooling systems. One passive thermal control method that can be applied is the use of Phase Change Material (PCM) as a latent heat storage medium. This study aims to analyze the effect of paraffin-aluminum PCM incorporation on the thermal performance of concrete walls through experimental testing. Four concrete wall prototypes with dimensions of 30 cm × 30 cm × 15 cm were prepared, consisting of a control wall without PCM and walls containing PCM layers with thicknesses of 2 cm, 3 cm, and 5 cm. The experiment was conducted under 200-watt lamp radiation for 16 hours, with temperature measurements recorded at three observation points using K-type thermocouples connected to a data logger. The results indicate that the incorporation of PCM reduced the wall surface temperature compared to the control wall. The 2 cm PCM specimen reduced the temperature by 18–22%, while the 3 cm PCM specimen achieved a 24.6% reduction. The best thermal performance was obtained from the 5 cm PCM specimen, with temperature reductions of 26.8% at the upper point, 22.9% at the middle point, and 19.2% at the lower point. Increasing PCM thickness improved the heat storage capacity and enhanced the wall’s ability to suppress surface temperature rise. The paraffin-aluminum PCM combination demonstrates potential as a passive thermal control material for building walls in tropical climates.

Abstract

This study aims to optimize biodiesel production from waste cooking oil using ultrasonic technology combined with Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The investigated variables include the methanol-to-oil molar ratio (6–12), alkaline catalyst concentration (1–3 wt%), and ultrasonic reaction time (480–1440 s). Based on 17 experimental runs, a two-factor interaction (2FI) linear regression model was developed. ANOVA results indicate that all variables significantly affect biodiesel yield (p < 0.05), with catalyst concentration as the most influential factor. The model demonstrates high predictive accuracy (R² = 0.937; adjusted R² = 0.900; MAE = 2.24%; RMSE = 2.84%). Optimization results indicate optimal conditions at a methanol-to-oil ratio of 10.96, a catalyst concentration of 1.03 wt%, and a reaction time of 1414.79 s, yielding 96.84% FAME. Ultrasonic technology effectively enhances mixing and accelerates reactions via cavitation. This study provides practical operational guidance to improve the efficiency of sustainable biodiesel production and support carbon emission reduction.

Abstract

Bipolar plate is a key component that determines a fuel cell's performance and service life. Carbon-based polymer composite materials were developed as lightweight, easy-to-process alternatives to metal. The use of carbon-based fillers in polymer composites has grown rapidly as an alternative to bipolar plate materials in fuel cell applications, especially to meet performance targets set by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). DOE requires high electrical conductivity (≥100 S/cm in the in-plane direction and ≥10 S/cm in the through-plane direction), low density, adequate mechanical strength, and good corrosion resistance and chemical stability. Recent studies have shown that the addition of carbon fillers, such as graphite, carbon black, graphene, and activated carbon, can increase electrical conductivity by forming conductive percolation networks in polymer matrices. This study evaluates the potential of activated carbon from household waste in the form of coconut shells as fillers in polypropylene composites for bipolar plate applications. Activated carbon is synthesized through carbonization and activation processes, then mixed into a polypropylene matrix with PP/KA compositions of 100/0, 90/10, 80/20, and 70/30 percent by weight. The focus of the study is the effect of composition variation on density and bending strength. The test results show that increasing the activated carbon fraction tends to decrease the composite density. The maximum density was obtained at a 90/10 (by weight) PP/KA composition of 0.9 g/cm³, indicating more effective filling of the pore matrix by activated carbon particles. On the other hand, bending strength shows a downward trend. The maximum flexural strength is achieved at an activated carbon composition of 34.58 MPa at 10% weight, indicating optimal dispersion and stress transfer between the matrix and the filler. The addition of activated carbon above the composition causes a decrease in bending strength due to potential particle agglomeration, cavities, and the limited mobility of polymer chains. Electrical conductivity tends to increase with the addition of activated carbon (AC) due to the formation of a network of electrical currents between carbon particles within cavities, reaching a maximum of 5 S/cm at 30% by weight of AC. The electrical conductivity obtained showed better improvement than several research results on polymeric materials using the hot-press method, with a value of 1.7 S/cm, using graphite filler materials up to 60% by weight. These findings confirm that activated carbon from coconut shells has the potential to serve as a sustainable filler for fuel cell bipolar plates, with an optimal composition that balances density and mechanical properties.

Abstract

Language is dynamic and exhibits variation due to differences in the social, geographical, and cultural backgrounds of its speakers, one of which is manifested in dialects that function as markers of socio-cultural identity within a community. This study aims to examine the variation of Bugis dialects in South Bone using a geosociolinguistic approach. This study employed a mixed-method approach with a sequential explanatory design. The population consisted of communities in the Kahu, Libureng, and Bontocani districts, with samples selected purposively. Quantitative data were collected using Likert-scale questionnaires, while qualitative data were obtained through in-depth interviews and participatory observation. Data sources included both primary and secondary data. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency distributions and percentages, whereas qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The results indicate that the community demonstrates a very high level of acceptance of Bugis dialect variation. These variations are evident in phonetic, lexical, and intonational aspects, with distinct characteristics in each region. Kahu tends to use a more neutral dialect, Libureng exhibits strong phonetic and intonational features, while Bontocani maintains more conservative phonetic characteristics due to geographical factors. These variations are influenced by geographical, social, cultural, educational, economic, and modernization factors. Thus, dialect variation is not perceived as a barrier to communication but rather as an essential component of the social and cultural identity of the Bugis community in South Bone.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of inorganic urea fertilizer, organic chitosan fertilizer, and their interaction on the growth and yield of pakcoy mustard (Brassica rapa L.). The experiment used a factorial randomized block design (RBD) with two factors: urea fertilizer dose, consisting of U0 (0 g plant⁻¹), U1 (0.8 g plant⁻¹), U2 (1.2 g plant⁻¹), and U3 (1.6 g plant⁻¹), and chitosan concentration, consisting of K0 (0%), K1 (20%), K2 (30%), and K3 (40%). Each treatment combination was replicated three times. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The results showed that urea fertilizer significantly affected plant height, number of leaves, stem base diameter, fresh weight, and chlorophyll content. The best responses were generally obtained at 1.6 g plant⁻¹ urea, while stem base diameter and chlorophyll content showed optimal responses at 1.2 g plant⁻¹ and 0.8–1.2 g plant⁻¹, respectively. Chitosan application also significantly improved pakcoy growth, with the best overall response observed at 40%. The interaction between urea and chitosan significantly affected plant height, stem base diameter, and fresh weight. The U3K3 treatment produced the highest plant height from 1 to 4 weeks after transplanting, as well as the highest stem base diameter and fresh weight. Meanwhile, the highest number of leaves and chlorophyll content were obtained in U2K2. Overall, the combined application of urea and chitosan enhanced pakcoy growth and yield performance.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of a multicultural Islamic education model oriented toward religious moderation in improving students’ tolerance attitudes at Islamic junior high schools. This study employed a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation involving the principal, Islamic Education teachers, and students selected through purposive sampling. The validity of the data was ensured through source and technique triangulation, while the data were analyzed thematically through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that the implementation of multicultural Islamic education oriented toward religious moderation was able to enhance students’ tolerance attitudes, as reflected in mutual respect, appreciation of differences, and inclusive social interactions within the madrasah environment. The implementation model was carried out through the integration of multicultural values into the learning process, school culture, and students’ religious activities. In addition, the role of teachers as facilitators, support from madrasah policies, and the strengthening of a religious moderation-based curriculum became the main factors contributing to the successful implementation of the model. The implications of this study indicate that multicultural Islamic education can serve as an effective strategy for strengthening religious moderation and fostering a sustainable culture of tolerance within Islamic educational institutions.
