Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strategy of going international in Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the handicraft sector in East Java with a case study approach on Written Batik MSMEs "Sumber Rejeki" in Sidoarjo Regency. The background of this research is based on the increasing demands of globalization and international market opportunities for the local creative industry, but still faced with limited capacity, market access, and digital literacy. The research method uses a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out descriptively with the theoretical framework of internationalization strategy and resource-based view (RBV). The results of the study show that the go international strategy implemented includes: (1) the use of global digital and e-commerce platforms as a means of penetrating the international market, (2) strengthening branding based on local wisdom through storytelling of batik products, (3) participation in international exhibitions and government programs such as trade expos, and (4) collaboration with export partners and aggregators. However, MSMEs still face various challenges, such as limited production capacity, international quality standards, logistical constraints, and export regulations. This research implies that the success of the internationalization of MSMEs is not only determined by internal resources, but also by ecosystem support, including governments, digital platforms, and global business networks.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the internationalization strategies of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the spice sector through export mechanisms, using PT Adore Rempah Indonesia as a case study. The study employs a qualitative approach using the case study method. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation related to production processes, quality control, packaging, and the management of international market networks. Data analysis was performed descriptively using the Uppsala Model and the Resource-Based View perspectives. The results indicate that the success of a company’s internationalization strategy is influenced by several key factors: consistent product quality, strengthening partnerships within the supply chain, implementing product differentiation, and holding certifications that support international trade standards. Additionally, the internationalization process occurs gradually through market learning, adaptation to the needs of international buyers, and the development of global business networks. The research findings confirm that the integration of internal resource strengths, product innovation, and compliance with international standards is a key factor in enhancing the competitiveness of spice SMEs in the global market. This study implies that strengthening production capacity, improving product quality, and developing international partnership networks should be key strategies in promoting the sustainability of SME exports in the spice sector.

Abstract

The internationalization of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) is a strategic issue in the global economic landscape, particularly in developing countries like Indonesia, which face the challenge of limited resources yet vast market potential. This case study explores the internationalization process of Sensatia Botanicals, an MSME specializing in skincare products made from natural botanical ingredients based in Jasri, Karangasem, Bali, which was founded in 2000. A qualitative single-case study approach adopts the Uppsala Internationalization Model integrated with the Resource-Based View (RBV) to analyze the stages of expansion: beginning with experimental exports to the Southeast Asian market (2010–2015), acceleration through global e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Shopee International, and Lazada Global (2016–2020), to deep penetration via distribution partnerships in Europe (Germany, the Netherlands) and North America (2021–present), with exports contributing 40% of the latest annual revenue of Rp 150 billion (2024). The company’s dynamic strategic capabilities include product innovation based on local Balinese resources (such as frangipani and organic turmeric), a commitment to sustainability (zero-waste production using 90% local materials), ethical practices (fair trade with over 500 local farmers), and a portfolio of more than 200 internationally certified product variants, including GMP, MUI Halal, ECOCERT, and USDA Organic—all completely free of parabens, palm oil, and harmful synthetic ingredients. Major challenges such as export regulatory uncertainty, rupiah exchange rate volatility, and competition from global brands (such as The Body Shop or Lush) were successfully navigated through a phased learning strategy, strategic alliances with global suppliers, and AI-driven digital transformation for customer personalization. Findings also indicate that integrating local capabilities (Bali’s unique botanicals) with global adaptation (international certifications and digital agility) yields a sustainable competitive advantage, with international customer retention rates reaching 70% (based on 2023–2024 CRM data), post-pandemic annual export growth averaging 28%, and expansion into 35 countries with over 15,000 global retail stores. This research makes a theoretical contribution by extending the Uppsala model through the lens of dynamic capabilities in the context of emerging market SMEs, while also providing managerial implications for Indonesian SME practitioners in building global competitiveness. Furthermore, from a management education perspective, these findings are relevant for the development of doctoral curricula that integrate real-world case studies of internationalization

Abstract

Purpose — The objective of this study is to evaluate the prevailing trends in publications and investigate the literature derived from multiple studies concerning the impact of digitalization on SMEs and their internationalization process.Method — We employ the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methodology to identify and consolidate publication trends from various articles. The literature utilized in this study is sourced from the Scopus database. By referring to the PRISMA chart, a total of 33 literature works were selected for analysis using VOSviewer. In this research, we utilize bibliometric analysis to examine article trends and employ content analysis to assess the literature.Result — We discovered that there were 19 keywords representing the latest and seldom explored themes among researchers, which were organized into 5 clusters for further analysis within a research framework. Moreover, we identified new and infrequently studied themes such as effectuation, international performance, digital transformation, digital technologies, and export performance. Additionally, we uncovered novel research topics that have the potential to inspire future studies in related areas.Contribution — This study contributes by examining literature on digitalization and internationalization, identifying research trends and proposing future directions, especially for SMEs in Southeast Asian countries. It also introduces the rarely-used Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach to examine the role of digitalization in internationalization, challenging the dominance of quantitative methods in prior research.

Abstract

The internationalization of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through e-commerce platforms is an increasingly relevant phenomenon in the digital economy era. This study aims to analyze the role of e-commerce platforms, especially Tokopedia, Shopee, and TikTok Shop, as potential export bridges for culinary MSMEs in Indonesia, by taking a case study on rollin.mlg, a culinary MSME based in Malang City, East Java. Using a qualitative approach with an exploratory case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, digital platform observations, and documentation. The results of the study show that although Rollin.mlg has not exported directly, the three platforms have features that have the potential to support international market penetration. However, there are significant obstacles, including a limited product shelf life, a lack of export certification, limited production capacity, and a lack of digital export literacy. This research contributes to the development of a digital export readiness framework for Indonesian culinary MSMEs.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of customs policy on the internationalization process of furniture MSMEs in Pasuruan by emphasizing the regulatory compliance aspect. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method on one of the furniture MSMEs that has carried out export activities. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation related to export procedures and compliance with customs requirements. The results of the study show that customs policy has a significant role in determining the smooth export process, especially in the aspects of administration, classification of goods, and fulfillment of export documents. The level of understanding of MSME actors with applicable regulations is a key factor in increasing compliance and minimizing export barriers. However, procedural complexity, limited regulatory literacy, and dynamic policy changes are still the main obstacles in the internationalization process. On the other hand, government support through socialization, digitization of customs services, and export facilitation has proven to be able to increase the readiness of MSMEs to penetrate the global market. This study concludes that the effectiveness of customs policies is not only determined by the regulations themselves, but also by the level of adaptation and compliance of MSMEs to the applicable regulations. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of increasing legal literacy and strengthening the assistance system for MSMEs to increase export competitiveness in a sustainable manner.
