Abstract

This study investigates the types of oral corrective feedback (OCF) most preferred by students at SMK Negeri 1 Bone, focusing on their perceptions of various feedback methods in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. The objective of the research is to identify which types of OCF are most effective and favored, contributing to improving teaching strategies in language learning. A quantitative research design was employed, using a structured questionnaire adapted from Bulbula (2020) to collect data from 60 students. The questionnaire included Likert-scale items ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree), evaluating six types of OCF: explicit correction, recast, metalinguistic feedback, clarification requests, elicitation, and repetition. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 29 to calculate descriptive statistics, including mean, standard deviation, and variance. The findings indicate that recast is the most preferred type of feedback, with the highest mean score (4.73–4.75), as its implicit nature promotes emotional safety and reduces anxiety. Repetition is also highly favored (mean: 4.15–4.17) for its ability to provide opportunities for self-correction in a supportive environment. In contrast, explicit correction (mean: 2.53), metalinguistic feedback (mean: 2.18), and elicitation (mean: 2.23–2.25) are less preferred due to their potential to cause anxiety or confusion. Clarification requests receive moderate favorability (mean: 3.53–3.55), encouraging critical thinking but requiring careful implementation to avoid stress. The study concludes that implicit feedback methods, such as recast and repetition, are more effective in fostering a positive learning experience. It recommends that educators prioritize these methods to enhance student confidence and engagement while ensuring the feedback aligns with students’ proficiency levels and needs. Future research could explore the long-term impact of preferred OCF methods on language acquisition and performance.

Abstract

This study explores students’ perceptions of their learning styles in the context of an English-speaking class. Using a descriptive qualitative design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and documentation involving tenth-grade Culinary A students at SMKN 2 Gowa. The findings indicate that while students are unfamiliar with the theoretical concept of learning styles, they exhibit clear visual, auditory, and kinesthetic preferences in receiving, processing, and evaluating information. The results highlight that visual learners depend on visual aids, auditory learners seek verbal clarification, and kinesthetic learners prefer physical or group activities. Despite their conceptual limitations, students are aware of effective learning strategies that align with their personal styles. These insights underscore the importance of recognizing individual learning preferences to enhance instructional design in speaking classes.

Abstract

Language anxiety represents a significant barrier for English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners, particularly in academic speaking tasks where performance pressure is elevated. This study aimed to identify the strategies second-semester English Literature students employed at Universitas Balikpapan to alleviate anxiety during academic speaking activities. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative research design, data were collected through semi-structured, face-to-face interviews with 20 purposively selected students who reported experiencing speaking anxiety. The interviews consisted of five key questions designed to elicit detailed descriptions of students’ experiences with language anxiety and their coping mechanisms. Thematic analysis revealed four main strategies consistently employed by students to manage language anxiety during academic speaking: preparation, relaxation, conviction, and resignation. Preparation emerged as a frequently reported strategy, wherein students meticulously practised their presentations, organized notes, and rehearsed vocabulary to build confidence (8 students). Relaxation techniques, including deep breathing, positive self-talk, and listening to music before presentations, were widely used to calm nerves (10 students). Conviction involved fostering a mindset of self-belief and positive affirmation, with students recognizing that mistakes are an integral part of learning (3 students). Lastly, some students adopted a strategy of resignation, accepting their anxiety but proceeding with the task regardless, often viewing it as a necessary challenge (2 students). These strategies varied according to individual coping styles and levels of self-efficacy. The findings underscore the importance of managing language anxiety to enhance academic speaking performance. The study recommends that educators cultivate supportive classroom environments and incorporate explicit anxiety-reduction techniques into speaking curricula. This research contributes novel insights by focusing specifically on anxiety management within academic speaking tasks, offering practical guidance for improving pedagogical approaches in EFL education. Future research could explore the long-term effectiveness of these strategies and the impact of instructor-led interventions on students’ anxiety management skills.

Abstract

This study analyzes the difficulties faced by low achiever students in learning English at SMA Negeri 7 Bulukumba. Focusing on two research questions, the study aims to (1) identify the causes of low achievement in English learning and (2) explore the perceptions of both students and teachers, particularly related to the use of technology. This qualitative case study involved five eleventh-grade low achiever students and two English teachers. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. Findings show internal factors such as low motivation, limited vocabulary, and poor grammar mastery hinder learning. Externally, the lack of family support, teacher-centered methods, and unproductive technology use compound these issues. While digital tools could aid learning, students’ low digital literacy and teachers’ limited technological integration reduce their impact. The study recommends personalized instruction, increased teacher support, and infrastructure improvements to address these challenges.

Abstract

The ability to speak confidently in English remains a major challenge for students in English as Foreign Language (EFL) contexts due to psychological barriers such as anxiety and low self-belief. While self-affirmation has been proposed as a promising strategy to enhance emotional resilience, its application in secondary EFL settings, particularly in non-Western cultures, remains underexplored. This qualitative phenomenological study investigates how students perceive the role of self-affirmation in managing speaking anxiety and enhancing speaking performance in an Indonesian Islamic high school. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with Grade 11 students and analyzed thematically. Findings revealed that students view self-affirmation as a tool for mental readiness, anxiety reduction, and confidence building—though not a substitute for speaking practice. Fear of social judgment emerged as a key anxiety trigger, and students demonstrated varying self-assessments of their performance. The study concludes that integrating affective strategies like self-affirmation can complement linguistic training and foster emotionally supportive EFL classrooms. This research offers context-specific insights into learner psychology and expands the use of self-affirmation beyond Western academic environments. Abstract

Speaking confidence is a crucial factor in successful English language learning, particularly in EFL settings where anxiety and low self-esteem often hinder oral participation. This qualitative study investigates the teaching strategies employed by English teachers at Cambridge English School, a private language institution in Makassar, Indonesia, to foster students’ confidence in speaking. Utilizing classroom observations and in-depth interviews with three experienced teachers, the study applies Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis to identify six key strategies: reflective questioning, warm-up activities, use of relevant and authentic topics, mixed-ability group work, prioritizing fluency over accuracy, and encouraging feedback. Findings reveal that mixed-ability groupings serve as a vital mechanism for peer scaffolding and emotional support, consistent with socio-constructivist and social cognitive theories. Other strategies contribute to creating a psychologically safe and motivating environment that enhances students’ willingness to communicate. The study underscores the importance of learner-centered practices that integrate cognitive and affective dimensions to build speaking confidence. Implications for EFL teaching and teacher training include deliberate group composition and fluency-focused instruction to foster risk-taking and spontaneous speech. This research bridges theory and practice, offering practical insights for educators aiming to cultivate oral confidence in diverse EFL classrooms.
