Abstract

This study was conducted to explore the impacts of code-switching implemented by lecturers in offline and online English classes based on students’ opinions. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with participants consisting of fourth-semester students from the English Department at the State Institute of Islamic Studies of Bone. Participants were chosen using purposive sampling from a class that experienced blended learning and regular use of code-switching during instruction. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and documentation. The results showed that students experienced both positive and negative impacts from the use of code-switching in the classroom. Positively, students reported that code-switching helped them improve their vocabulary, understand English more effectively, and better comprehend the subject matter. Many students felt that when lecturers explained English terms using Indonesian, it allowed them to grasp complex ideas more clearly and retain new information more easily. Code-switching was also seen as a tool to reduce confusion and anxiety, especially for students who lacked confidence in their English skills. It enabled a smoother transition into English comprehension and made classroom learning more inclusive. In both online and offline settings, students expressed appreciation for this approach as it allowed them to focus more on the material rather than struggling with unfamiliar language. However, they still get a negative impacts which is from the online classes. The main negative impact stemmed from poor internet connections, which led to unclear audio and pronunciation issues, especially during English portions of the lecture. This made it harder for students to fully understand the content. Despite this, students developed strategies such as note-taking and asking for clarification to overcome these obstacles. Overall, the study concludes that code-switching, when used effectively, serves as a valuable instructional strategy in bilingual classrooms, enhancing comprehension, supporting language development, and helping students participate more confidently in both online and offline learning environments.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the implementation of 21st-century 6C skills (Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, Citizenship, and Character) in EFL classrooms, focusing on teachers' implementation practice. The theories of this research were social constructivism by Vygotsky (1978) and language teacher cognition by Borg (2003). Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis involving two experienced EFL teachers at SMPN 27 Makassar. Findings revealed that teachers systematically integrated 6C skills through three stages such as: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. Challenges included diverse student proficiency levels, time constraints, and technological limitations, which teachers addressed through strategies like mixed-ability grouping, project-based learning (PBL), and role-playing. The study recommends professional development, resource allocation, and policy support to optimize 6C skill integration in EFL instruction.

Abstract

Bagian terpenting yang dapat dilakukan untuk meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan adalah dengan cara meningkatkan kualitas guru, dikarenakan guru merupakan ujung tombak pendidikan sehingga guru harus memiliki kemampuan berbeda dengan profesi lainnya, salah satunya adalah kemampuan membuat media pembelajaran berbasis digital. Dengan memiliki kemampuan mengolah media digital, guru memperoleh banyak hal, selain karyanya dapat digunakan sebagai media pembelajaran. Penyuluhan yang berjudul Pendampingan Pembuatan Media Pembelajaran Berbasis Digital Bagi Guru Sekolah Dasar Negeri 2 Kayangan Lombok Utara merupakan bagian dari pengabdian pada masyarakat FKIP Universitas Mataram, jurusan Ilmu Pendidikan, yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kualitas guru khususnya dalam pemanfaatan media digital. Metode yang diterapkan dalam kegiatan penyuluhan ini adalah gabungan metode ceramah, tanya-jawab, demonstrasi serta pemberian tugas. Metode ceramah dimanfaatkan saat penyampaian materi penyuluhan, dan metode tanya-jawab serta demonstrasi dilakukan pada para guru mendiskusikan lembar kerja dalam kelompok masing-masing. Sedangkan demonstrasi dilakukan pada saat setiap kelompok mempresentasikan hasil karya yang telah dibuat. Adapun target pengabdian ini adalah Memberikan pelatihan pembuatan media pembelajaran berbasis IT.

Abstract

This study was conducted to identify students’ learning styles, the problems they face, their strategies, and their perceptions of speaking English based on their respective learning styles. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The tenth-grade Culinary A students of SMKN 2 Gowa were selected as the research subjects. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The results revealed that: (1) The most dominant learning styles employed by the students in the classroom is visual learning style, followed by auditory learning style and kinesthetic learning style (2) The problems experienced by students in English speaking activities based on their learning styles, such as visual learners faced issues such as lack of confidence, difficulty understanding instructions without visual aids, pronunciation challenges, and noisy classroom environments. Auditory learners encountered problems such as fear of making mistakes, confusion, discomfort, grammar issues, and hesitation, while kinesthetic learners struggled with boredom, panic, nervousness, lack of self-confidence, and fear of being laughed at. (3) The strategies identified by visual learners included planning, memorizing, taking notes, and preparing visual aids. Auditory learners resolved their difficulties by speaking loudly, watching video podcasts, memorizing, and using audio tools such as voice recordings, and kinesthetic learners addressed their challenges by asking for permission to move, using body movements, and employing physical tools such as pens or markers.

Abstract

The performance of tappers has an effect on the high or low level of production and productivity of the latex produced by a company.  However, many tappers are only fixated on the production target (quantity) that must be achieved rather than paying attention to the quality of the tapping.  This study aims to analyze the performance of tappers based on the quality of tapping and the factors that influence it and to determine the application of the premium system.  The research was conducted from November to December 2019 at PT Perkebunan Nusantara VII Way Berulu, Pesawaran, Lampung.  The research used a survey method and purposive sampling technique by selecting 12 tappers based on age, education level, and work experience and observing 5 sample trees from each tapper.  Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and level test analysis of 5%. The results showed that the performance of tappers is in the good category, because it has few wood wounds and the depth of tapping and bark consumption is in accordance with recommended norms.  The factors of age, education level and work experience do not have a significant effect on the performance of tappers.  All tappers do not receive a premium because it does not exceed the task bases.

Abstract

  Language anxiety remains one of the most critical affective factors influencing students’ success in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning, particularly in speaking performance. This study investigates the types of language anxiety and their impacts on students’ academic speaking performance at Universitas Balikpapan. The research aims to (1) identify the dominant types of language anxiety experienced by students and (2) examine how anxiety affects fluency, accuracy, and complexity in academic speaking. A descriptive qualitative method was employed with data gathered from twenty second-semester students of the English Literature program. Instruments included the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS), observation checklists, and recorded oral performances. Results revealed that trait anxiety was the most prevalent, experienced by 45% of participants, followed by situation-specific anxiety (30%) and state anxiety (25%). Regarding impact, language anxiety significantly reduced students’ fluency, with most classified as disfluent or very disfluent speakers. However, accuracy and complexity were less affected; most students achieved good or excellent ratings. These findings suggest that while anxiety predominantly impairs the spontaneity of speech, it does not heavily disrupt students’ ability to produce correct or comprehensible language. This study highlights the need for targeted classroom interventions to address anxiety-related fluency issues while reinforcing existing strengths in accuracy and complexity.

Abstract

This study investigates the extent to which self-affirmation and speaking anxiety influence English oral performance among Indonesian EFL senior high school students. Employing a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design, the research involved 30 eleventh-grade students from SMAIT Wahdah Islamiyah Makassar. Quantitative data were collected through validated questionnaires and speaking assessments, followed by in-depth interviews with five selected participants to gain qualitative insights. Multiple regression analysis indicated that neither self-affirmation nor speaking anxiety significantly predicted speaking performance, although anxiety demonstrated a marginally negative trend. Descriptive statistics showed wide variations in both psychological and performance measures. Meanwhile, qualitative findings revealed that self-affirmation contributed to mental readiness and reduced nervousness, while speaking anxiety often impaired fluency and focus during oral tasks. Thematic analysis emphasized that self-affirmation alone was insufficient to improve performance but played a meaningful emotional regulatory role when paired with consistent speaking practice. The study contributes to the limited body of research on psychological interventions in Indonesian EFL classrooms by offering empirical evidence and context-specific insights. It highlights that while self-affirmation may not yield immediate performance gains, its potential as an affective support mechanism remains valuable. This research fills a gap in current literature by exploring how self-affirmation operates in tandem with anxiety within a high-school EFL setting in Indonesia—a context underrepresented in previous studies.

Abstract

In EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classrooms, many students struggle with speaking due to anxiety, low self-confidence, and fear of making mistakes. This issue is particularly prevalent among learners with limited vocabulary or basic proficiency levels, making it a persistent challenge for language teachers. This study explores teachers’ perceptions of the strategies they employ to build students’ speaking confidence in an EFL context. Conducted at Cambridge English School in Makassar, Indonesia, this qualitative research involved in-depth interviews and classroom observations of three experienced English teachers. Thematic analysis of the data revealed four key strategies perceived as effective: active learning (e.g., role-play and peer interviews), collaborative learning (especially small group discussions), praise and positive feedback, and creating safe peer-based environments. Teachers reported that these strategies increased students’ willingness to participate, enhanced their fluency, and encouraged risk-taking in communication. The emotional support provided through praise and structured peer collaboration helped reduce anxiety and fostered a sense of psychological safety. These findings are interpreted through theoretical lenses such as Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, Krashen’s affective filter hypothesis, and Bandura’s self-efficacy theory. The study concludes that promoting speaking confidence in EFL learners requires not only linguistic input but also strategies that address emotional and social aspects of learning. Implications for learner-centered pedagogy are discussed.

Abstract

This study focuses on the difficulties faced by low achiever students in learning English at SMA Negeri 7 Bulukumba, a rural school with limited educational resources. Using a descriptive qualitative case study, data were gathered from five low-performing students and two English teachers through interviews, observations, and documentation. Findings reveal that internal issues, such as low motivation, poor vocabulary, and grammatical difficulties, are compounded by external factors, including inadequate support, traditional teaching methods, and the unproductive use of technology. Although digital tools have potential, limited digital literacy and infrastructure hinder their effectiveness. The study calls for contextualized teaching, teacher training, and improved technological support to enhance English learning for low achievers in rural areas.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pemanfaatan media internet mahasiswa, kemudian untuk mengetahui tingkat, besarnya penguasaan media internet para instruktur dalam memotivasi mahasiswa Institut Cokroaminoto Pinrang serta untuk mengetahui kaitan pemanfaatan media internet dengan motivasi belajar mahasiswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pengguna teknologi belajar melalui internet berada pada kategori tinggi (76,67%). Artinya bahwa teknologi komunikasi memiliki manfaat yang sangat besar terhadap peningkatan penguasaan media internet para instruktur dalam memotivasi mahasiswa berada pada kategori tinggi (65,22%). Artinya bahwa selama ini peningkatan penguasaan media internet para instruktur dalam memotivasi mahasiswa adalah adanya minat, semangat, dan keinginan untuk mempelajari media tersebut. Pemanfaatan teknologi belajar melalui internet mempunyai kaitan yang kuat dengan peningkatan motivasi belajar mahasiswa. Hal ini ditandai dengan nilai koefisien korelasi R = 0,885 (mendekati nilai angka 1). Maknanya semakin progresif pemanfaatan teknologi informasi komunikasi dimata pelajaran teknologi informasi komunikasi maka semakin menguatnya dominasi media internet para instruktur dalam memotivasi mahasiswa Institut Cokroaminoto Pinrang.
