Abstract

This study explores the challenges faced by teachers in implementing interactive speaking strategies for low-level students in the Speaking for Teens classes at Britania School of English (BSE). A qualitative case study design was employed to examine teachers’ experiences in real classroom contexts. The participants consisted of three English teachers, supported by nine students from three classes. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing, and thematic analysis. The findings revealed that teachers encountered several challenges during interactive speaking activities, including noise distractions caused by classroom arrangements, student fatigue during after-school sessions, difficulties in understanding instructions, classroom management issues during games and group work, and the need to adjust activities to match students’ low English proficiency. These challenges were influenced by environmental, affective, linguistic, and pedagogical factors. The study concludes that difficulties in implementing interactive speaking strategies stem largely from contextual and learner-related factors rather than weaknesses in the strategies themselves; therefore, teachers need to carefully plan, adapt, and manage interactive activities by considering students’ proficiency levels, classroom conditions, and emotional readiness to support effective speaking instruction.

Abstract

This qualitative case study investigates how three master students in the English Language Education Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar implement ChatGPT to support critical thinking in academic writing. Data were collected through triangulation of four sources, direct observations, semi-structured interviews, self-reflective journals, and documentation, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman's (1994) interactive model of data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing, guided by Paul and Elder's (2019) critical thinking framework and Hyland's (2018) academic writing framework. Findings reveal that students implement ChatGPT systematically across four writing stages: brainstorming and idea development, argument development and organization, information verification and validation, and comparative evaluation with traditional methods. The study's key contribution is its empirical demonstration that effective ChatGPT implementation functions as a cognitive scaffold that enhances rather than replaces critical thinking, provided students engage purposefully, verify outputs against academic sources, and adapt, rather than adopt, AI-generated content. These findings offer practical guidance for pedagogy and institutional policy on responsible AI integration in graduate academic writing.

Abstract

KUB ZIAE Sembalun Bumbung is a souvenir center located on the main tourist route of Sembalun, offering products such as black garlic, organic red rice, Rinjani coffee, and dried beans. However, this business faces challenges including weak brand identity, low visibility, and the absence of digital presence. Limited digital literacy among managers also results in reliance on conventional promotion methods. This community service program aimed to enhance KUB ZIAE’s competitiveness through two key strategies: (1) strengthening offline visual identity with signboards, banners, and product labels; and (2) developing digital assets such as Google Business Profile, Instagram, and Facebook accounts, along with content creation training. A participatory approach was applied, including needs assessment, co-design, intensive training, and on-site mentoring. The results showed improved business visibility with the installation of signboards and banners, while new product labels increased consumer trust. On the digital side, the Google Business account successfully appeared in search results, Instagram posts reached hundreds of accounts, and members gained skills in creating and managing promotional content. Although challenges remain, such as limited digital literacy and internet connectivity, the intervention effectively enhanced visibility, expanded market reach, and strengthened KUB ZIAE’s image as a leading souvenir center in the Rinjani tourism area

Abstract

This study examines how the role and position of code switching in English language learning at SMP Negeri 3 Parepare, focusing on teachers' perceptions of code switching and the role of code switching in students' involvement in teaching. The approach is done with qualitative research method; data collection is done by observation in the classroom and interviews to several English teachers and students taught by the teacher. Based on the data obtained from the interviews, which showed a dominant positive attitude towards code switching and hope for the potential of code switching in the future. In addition, observation data showed the role of code switching in student engagement and activeness which increased when it was used. After conducting interviews as a follow-up to observations, many students and teachers indicated that code switching can increase students' comfort and motivation in learning English because they feel they can be accepted in the “English only” system that is often used in English language learning now, even so what concerns teachers is the frequency of its use which must be paid more attention to in order to be more effective. From the research conducted, it can be concluded that code-switching plays an important role in the English language learning process. The use of code-switching as a pedagogical strategy bridge understanding and maintains student engagement in the classroom, while students are assisted in terms of material comprehension, emotional comfort, and active participation. However, both teachers and students are aware that excessive reliance on the mother tongue can hinder the development of English-speaking skills. Therefore, the effectiveness of code-switching depends on its measured, purposeful, and contextual application, so that it can function as a flexible and effective learning tool, not something that is overused or completely rejected. Keywords: Code switching, Student engagement, language learning, Pedagogic, Teacher perception.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is one of the important aspects in early childhood language development that plays a role in children's communication skills and learning readiness. However, in learning practices, children are still found to have limited vocabulary due to the use of less varied and less interesting learning methods. Therefore, learning innovation is needed through the use of educational game-based digital media that can increase children's involvement in learning. This study aims to determine whether there is an effect of the use of educational game media on vocabulary mastery of group B children at Nurul Iman Sekarbela Islamic Kindergarten. This study uses a quantitative approach with an experimental method in the form of a Quasi Experiment, with a one group pretest  -posttest  design. Data collection techniques use observation and documentation using a validated observation sheet instrument, then the data analysis technique uses a normality test and hypothesis testing using a paired sample T-test with the help of SPSS (Statistical Product and Service Solutions) version 21. The population in this study were 164 early childhood children in group B at Nurul Iman Sekarbela Islamic Kindergarten. The sample in this study was 15 children in group B in group B1. The researcher used a sampling approach called purposive sampling (one group). Based on the results of the study, before the treatment, the average pretest   score was 77.93. After the treatment, the average posttest  score increased to 103.07. The hypothesis test shows that the significant value (2-tailed) is 0.001 with a sample size of 15 children at a 5% level. Based on the results of the 2-tailed sig. value obtained, namely 0.001, it can be said that 0.001 <0.05. Therefore, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted, meaning that there is an influence of the use of educational games on the vocabulary mastery of group B children at Nurul Iman Sekarbela Islamic Kindergarten. Thus, it can be concluded that there is an influence of the use of educational game media on the vocabulary mastery of group B children at Nurul Iman Sekarbela Islamic Kindergarten.
