Abstract

This study examines how a love-based curriculum is institutionalized within Islamic education management to develop a humanistic school culture. The research addresses the persistent gap between value-based educational leadership discourse and its practical implementation in institutional management, particularly in faith-based schooling contexts. This research employed a qualitative interpretive case study design conducted at MAN Kotawaringin Timur, Indonesia. Data were collected from 24 participants, including school leaders, teachers, staff members, students, and a school committee representative, through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and analysis of institutional documents. Data were analyzed using iterative thematic coding to identify patterns of value integration across management practices. The findings reveal that the love-based curriculum functions not only as a pedagogical approach but also as an organizational governance framework embedded in four interconnected managerial dimensions: value-oriented strategic planning, empathetic-participatory leadership, dialogical learning practices, and continuous character-oriented evaluation. These dimensions collectively form an integrative Islamic education management model that transforms ethical values into institutional drivers shaping relational trust, psychological safety, and student social-religious engagement. Theoretically, this study contributes to value-based educational leadership and school culture research by conceptualizing love as an institutional governance mechanism within Islamic educational management.

Abstract

This study examines gender bias in elementary school Islamic Religious Education (IRE) textbooks under Indonesia’s Merdeka Curriculum. Although gender representation in textbooks has been widely studied, research integrating Critical Discourse Analysis with Islamic feminist perspectives in the context of religious education remains limited. This study aims to identify forms of gender bias, analyze the discursive strategies that reproduce them, and interpret their implications for the construction of religious authority. The research employed qualitative document analysis using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). Data were collected from 214 textual units and 96 visual illustrations in elementary-level IRE textbooks, complemented by semi-structured interviews with four Islamic education teachers in Pulang Pisau Regency, Central Kalimantan. The analysis focused on actor representation, distribution of social roles, grammatical structures, and the construction of religious leadership. The findings reveal a significant gender imbalance. Men appear as 61.7% of the main subjects and dominate 78.8% of religious leadership roles. Male characters are more frequently associated with active grammatical structures (68.2%), while women appear more often in passive constructions and domestic activities (67.8%). These patterns contribute to what this study conceptualizes as the masculinization of religious authority, where religious leadership and moral authority are discursively associated with male figures. Teacher interviews indicate awareness of this imbalance, although textbooks still strongly influence students’ perceptions of gender roles. The findings highlight the need for gender-responsive revisions of religious education materials to promote more inclusive representations.

Abstract

Digital transformation has fundamentally changed educational management, requiring school leaders to possess adaptive leadership competencies capable of responding to technological innovation and organizational change. Nevertheless, limited research has examined Islamic educational leadership from the perspective of digital transformation. This study aims to formulate an adaptive leadership model for principals of Islamic educational institutions in the digital era. A qualitative multiple-case study was conducted across several Islamic schools recognized for implementing digital innovation. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis, followed by thematic analysis. The findings indicate that successful Islamic educational leadership combines visionary planning, technological competence, collaborative decision-making, ethical governance, and Islamic values-based management. School principals who successfully integrate these competencies create innovative organizational cultures while maintaining strong religious identity and institutional integrity. The proposed leadership model also supports sustainable school improvement through continuous professional development and digital governance. The novelty of this research is the formulation of an Adaptive Digital Islamic Leadership Model that integrates contemporary leadership theory with Islamic educational values, offering a comprehensive framework for leading Islamic schools in the era of educational digitalization

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (Pesantren) are experiencing increasing pressure to adapt to digital transformation while preserving their traditional educational identity. This study aims to analyze strategies for developing Smart Pesantren through the integration of educational technology, digital management systems, and Islamic values. A multiple-case qualitative study was conducted across several modern Islamic boarding schools implementing digital innovation. Data were collected through interviews with school leaders, teachers, students, classroom observations, and institutional documentation. The findings reveal that successful digital transformation depends on visionary leadership, digital infrastructure, teacher competence, curriculum innovation, and institutional culture. Technology integration enhances administrative efficiency, instructional quality, student engagement, and access to digital Islamic resources while maintaining the spiritual traditions of pesantren education. The study also identifies several implementation challenges, including digital literacy gaps, infrastructure disparities, and resistance to organizational change. The novelty of this research lies in developing the Smart Pesantren Transformation Framework, which integrates educational technology, Islamic leadership, institutional governance, and pesantren values into a comprehensive digital transformation model

Abstract

Immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) have transformed educational practices by creating interactive and experiential learning environments. Nevertheless, their implementation in Islamic Religious Education remains relatively unexplored. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of VR-based instruction in improving students’ understanding of Islamic history and enhancing meaningful religious learning experiences. A quasi-experimental design involving 186 secondary school students was employed. Students in the experimental group participated in VR-assisted learning activities featuring virtual tours of Islamic historical sites, simulations of Hajj rituals, and immersive explorations of Islamic civilization, while the control group received conventional instruction. Data were collected through achievement tests, motivation questionnaires, classroom observations, and interviews. The results indicate that VR significantly improves conceptual understanding, historical awareness, student engagement, and learning motivation. Students also reported greater emotional involvement and stronger connections with Islamic historical narratives. The novelty of this study is the development of an Immersive Islamic Learning Model that integrates virtual reality technology with experiential learning principles to strengthen cognitive, affective, and spiritual dimensions of Islamic Religious Education

Abstract

This study aims to explore the values of benefit from the perspective of Islamic law regarding the transformation of qurban meat management through the Rendang-Mu program within the Lembaga Amil Zakat Infaq Shadaqah Muhammadiyah (LAZISMU) in the Central Java region, Indonesia. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection techniques involved snowball and purposive sampling, with analysis conducted using the maqasid al-Shariah theory by al-Shatibi. The findings indicate that the Rendang-Mu Program represents a transformation in the pattern of meat management and distribution, implementing a system of qurban meat management through canning and packaging with three essential benefits that facilitate and enhance its utility: (1) prolonged consumption and distribution over an extended period, (2) practical, delicious, and nutritious, (3) more evenly distributed reach, (4) high flexibility in achieving community food security, and (5) compliance with Islamic law.

Abstract

The concepts of Islamic education and da’wah have garnered significant scholarly interest; however, most prior research remains theoretical, lacking a detailed examination of how Islamic universities operationalize curricula to cultivate future da’wah leaders. This study fills that gap by investigating how Muhammadiyah Higher Education (MHE), Perguruan Tinggi Muhammadiyah (PTM), systematically prepares the next generation of da’is or preachers. Employing a qualitative-descriptive methodology, data were collected through document analysis, curriculum review, and semi-structured interviews with academic leaders. The analysis demonstrates that MHE has integrated Muhammadiyah values across its curricula and established a formal collaboration with the Asia Muslim Charity Foundation (AMCF) to strengthen students’ Arabic proficiency and Islamic literacy, competencies essential for da’wah roles. These innovative strategies show how MHE not only provides ideological formation but also technical preparation for da’wah practitioners. This article thus presents a concrete model of how an Islamic educational institution integrates da’wah within its academic structures, making both theoretical and practical contributions to the broader discourse on Islamic higher education.

Abstract

This research critically analyzes the historiographical debate surrounding the transmission of Greek philosophy to the Islamic world, polarized into two main paradigms: dehellenization and Islamization. The background of this research lies in the unresolved epistemological tension within contemporary academic discourse concerning the nature of the Islamization of philosophy, as well as the legitimacy of philosophy in the Islamic intellectual tradition. The research question posed is: how to comprehensively understand the process of the Islamization of philosophy, moving beyond the simplistic dichotomy between purification and hybridization? This research aims to offer a new, more holistic perspective on the dialectic between Islamic philosophy and Greek heritage, focusing the analysis on concrete intellectual practices. This research uses a qualitative-interpretive approach with intellectual history methods, literature, and integrates three theories, namely: the transmission of knowledge from Dimitri Gutas, the theory of cultural hybridity from Homi K. Bhabha, and the philosophical hermeneutics from Hans-Georg Gadamer. Research findings indicate that the Islamization of philosophy is a multidimensional phenomenon encompassing aspects of creative selection, transformative adaptation, and original synthesis. This process involves interconnected intellectual operations, namely filtering, embedding, and generating. Furthermore, this research reveals the distinctive methodology of Muslim philosophers, which includes tafsiriyyah hermeneutics and integrative epistemology with its various models. The theoretical contribution of this research is a new model for understanding the transmission of knowledge across cultures and a historical foundation for contemporary Islamic-Western philosophical dialogue.

Abstract

Arabic language instruction in Indonesian higher education faces the diglossic challenge between Fusha (standard Arabic) and Amiyah (colloquial dialects). Instruction predominantly emphasizes Fusha, while Amiyah is rarely or never formally taught, resulting in students who are proficient in formal literacy but limited in practical communication. This study aims to explore academics’ perceptions regarding the teaching of Fusha and Amiyah, understand students’ challenges, and evaluate the curriculum strategies employed. A descriptive qualitative approach was adopted, involving in-depth interviews with 20 Arabic language academics from various State Islamic Universities (UINs) across Indonesia, analyzed using content analysis techniques. Findings indicate that Fusha serves as the primary foundation for academic literacy, whereas Amiyah is acquired informally through extracurricular experiences or exchange programs. Teaching strategies include lectures, text analysis, discussions, and Fusha-based writing exercises. These results provide an in-depth understanding of the prioritization of formal literacy and underscore the need to develop optional Amiyah modules to equip students with cross-cultural communication skills. The study recommends further exploration of integrating Amiyah into the formal curriculum.

Abstract

Islamic higher education encounters a continuous challenge in integrating classical Islamic heritage (Turath) with modern knowledge in a consistent and meaningful way. This study examines to which extent Islamic education programs balance Turath (classical Islamic heritage) and modern knowledge in the Faculties of Sharia and Islamic Studies at the University of Zawia, Libya. Using a mixed-methods explanatory sequential design, quantitative data were collected from 350 students through a structured questionnaire, followed by qualitative interviews with 20 lecturers to provide deep insights. The findings indicate that students demonstrate a high appreciation for both Turath (M = 4.34, SD = 0.79) and modern knowledge (M = 4.08, SD = 0.96), reflecting strong support for an integrative model of Islamic education. However, curriculum balance was rated at a moderate level (M = 3.35, SD = 1.07), suggesting that integration between the two domains remains insufficient. Teaching practices were also perceived as moderately effective (M = 3.73, SD = 0.96), with limitations in fostering critical engagement and application. Furthermore, students identified significant challenges (M = 4.09, SD = 0.90), particularly the overreliance on memorization, weak linkage between theory and practice, and limited institutional coordination. Qualitative findings confirm that these challenges rooted in structural fragmentation, lack of a unified curriculum framework, and insufficient pedagogical training. The study concludes that while the conceptual foundation for integration exists, effective implementation requires systematic curriculum reform, pedagogical innovation, and institutional integration.
