Abstract

Objective: This article aims to analyze the concept of gender consciousness from an Islamic perspective and its relevance in contemporary society. This study focuses on the principles of justice, spiritual equality, and complementary gender roles. The ultimate goal is to formulate a moderate, contextual, and applicable framework for Islamic gender consciousness. Theoretical framework: This research uses the framework of Islamic justice and spiritual equality. The analysis is supported by maqashid al shariah and the thought of contemporary scholars. This framework emphasizes the balance of gender rights and responsibilities. Literature review: Previous studies have shown diverse views on Islam and gender. Gender inequality is often associated with patriarchal culture and interpretations. However, contextual synthesis studies are still limited. Methods: This study uses a qualitative approach based on literature studies. Data are obtained from the Quran, Hadith, and the latest academic literature. The analysis is carried out through content and thematic analysis. Results: The results of the study show that Islamic gender awareness is based on proportional justice, not absolute equality. Gender inequality in social practice is more influenced by cultural factors and ahistorical interpretations. Moderate Islamic gender awareness has proven to be relevant for maintaining social balance and harmony in society. Implications: These findings have implications for strengthening education and gender-fair policies. Islamic gender awareness can prevent discrimination and extremism. This approach supports social harmony. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in the synthesis of Islamic values and modern gender issues. This article offers a moderate Islamic gender awareness concept. This approach is both applicable and contextual.

Abstract

This study explores Kiai Sanuri’s leadership as an “academic kiai” at Pesantren Sholahuddin Surabaya, focusing on how his approach reshapes the cultural foundations of a traditional Islamic boarding school. Employing an ethnographic qualitative design, the research draws on in-depth interviews, participant observation, and institutional documents. The findings show that Kiai Sanuri has cultivated an integrative leadership model that brings together charismatic religious authority, participatory governance, and academically grounded management. Leadership practices are expressed through structured decision-making, strategic planning informed by evidence, and the deliberate integration of scientific literacy into everyday pesantren life. These efforts have strengthened organisational professionalism, expanded educational networks, enhanced academic standards, and repositioned santri as active contributors to knowledge. The study suggests that the “academic kiai” model offers a credible and contextually grounded framework for pesantren leadership in navigating contemporary educational and social change.

Abstract

This study analyzes the application of maqāṣid al-sharīah in marriage registration policies in Indonesia, aiming to bridge the tension between the validity of marriage under fiqh and the administrative obligations under positive law. The focus of the study is on the social and legal implications of the practice of nikah sirri on the protection of women’s and children’s rights within Muslim families. The study employs a legal-normative method with a conceptual and statutory approach. The analysis examines the doctrine of maqāṣid al-sharīah developed by al-Ghazali, al-Shatibi, and Jasser Auda, and relates it to marriage regulations in Indonesia. Data were analyzed qualitatively through a normative interpretation of the objectives of Islamic law and national law. The results indicate that marriage registration serves not only as an administrative procedure but also as a shar‘iyyah instrument that protects religion, life, intellect, lineage, and property. This study contributes to strengthening the normative legitimacy of the obligation to register marriages while supporting the enhancement of legal certainty, justice, and the public interest for Muslim families in Indonesia.

Abstract

Arabic language learning using classical methods is part of the tradition of studying kitab kuning through sorogan and bandongan. This method preserves the integrity of the chain of knowledge transmission from teacher to santri. The challenges of modernization demand more adaptive and efficient methods; however, the classical approach remains superior in maintaining the depth of textual understanding and the validity of knowledge. This study aims to analyze the implementation of classical Arabic learning methods in understanding kitab kuning at Pondok Pesantren Assalafiyah Purworejo, identify supporting and inhibiting factors, and examine the urgency and relevance of these methods in the contemporary era. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical model based on field study. The results show that learning is carried out through a complementary combination of sorogan and bandongan, where sorogan emphasizes the readiness and responsibility of santri, while bandongan provides a basic understanding collectively. The continuity of the method is supported by the authority of the kiai, a structured learning environment, and the readiness of santri, but is constrained by limited time, the quality of instructors, and differences in santri ability. The urgency of this method lies in its ability to maintain the accuracy of text comprehension as well as the continuity of the pesantren’s scholarly tradition.

Abstract

Primary Islamic education plays a crucial role in shaping children’s religious understanding, moral character, and everyday worship practices. However, the teaching of fiqh al-‘ibadat and Qur’anic learning often remains fragmented, with theoretical instruction separated from practical application across different educational contexts. This study aims to compare how these two domains are integrated in primary Islamic education in Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Nigeria, and to identify pedagogical patterns that support holistic student development. A qualitative comparative multiple-case design was employed using document analysis, semi-structured interviews with teachers and school leaders, and classroom observations across selected schools in the four countries. Data were analyzed thematically to identify recurring similarities, differences, and contextual factors influencing instructional practice. The findings show two dominant models. Indonesia and Malaysia demonstrate more structured integration between conceptual learning, worship practice, and moral reflection through curriculum guidance and teacher preparation. In Pakistan and Nigeria, instruction places stronger emphasis on ritual performance and memorization, while conceptual and reflective dimensions depend largely on teacher initiative. Across all contexts, teachers face common challenges in simplifying abstract religious concepts for young learners. The study concludes that effective primary Islamic education requires balanced integration of knowledge, practice, and values. It implies that curriculum reform, teacher professional development, and contextual learning resources are needed to strengthen holistic Islamic education in diverse institutional settings.

Abstract

The rapid integration of digital technologies has transformed global education systems, reshaping the ways learners, educators, and institutions interact and create value. This theoretical inquiry explores the role of digital social capital in the reconfiguration of global education economies, emphasizing its effects on knowledge flows, pedagogical innovation, credentialing, and institutional strategy. Drawing on a comprehensive review of interdisciplinary literature from sociology, economics, education studies, and information and communication technology (ICT), the study develops a conceptual framework that positions digital social networks as both a social and economic asset. The analysis highlights the opportunities and challenges associated with digital social capital, including its potential to enhance learning outcomes, generate economic value, and expand global connectivity, as well as its dependence on access, digital literacy, and policy frameworks. This paper contributes to the literature by providing a multi-dimensional theoretical model that explains how digital social capital mediates structural transformations in education and offers insights for policymakers, educators, and institutions seeking to leverage digital networks for equitable and sustainable educational outcomes. The findings also underscore the need for inclusive policies to mitigate digital inequalities and optimize the benefits of networked learning in a global context.

Abstract

This study examines the challenges of media education in addressing the spread of hoaxes among Generation Z, who are digital natives living in the digital era. Although Generation Z has extensive access to technology and social media, their levels of digital literacy vary significantly, particularly in information verification and digital ethics. Their susceptibility to hoaxes is influenced by the intensity of social media use, limited critical thinking skills, and the insufficient integration of media literacy into formal education. Using a literature review method, this study analyzes the characteristics of Generation Z, the factors contributing to their vulnerability to hoaxes, and effective strategies for strengthening media literacy. The findings highlight the need for comprehensive, collaborative, and adaptive media literacy education that aligns with technological developments and the specific characteristics of Generation Z, enabling them to become smart, critical, and responsible digital citizens. This study contributes to the understanding of how media education can be optimized to enhance Generation Z’s resilience against misinformation, offering a conceptual framework for developing more effective and contextually relevant media literacy programs

Abstract

Environmental degradation and climate change are urgent ethical and theological challenges prompting faith-based responses. In Islam, the principles of tauhid (oneness), khilafah (stewardship), and amanah (sacred trust) are reframed into an ecological ethic affirming environmental care as a religious duty. This study aims to explore how Muhammadiyah constructs its eco-theological discourse by analyzing peer-reviewed works from 2021 to 2024 through an integrative literature review and summary matrix. The analysis identifies three core dimensions: theology, education, and activism. Muhammadiyah expands al-Ma’un theology to include ecological justice, embeds environmental values in educational institutions, and promotes activism through legal advocacy, fatwas, and grassroots movements. These efforts position Muhammadiyah as an ethical force in environmental governance. Findings reveal a holistic, replicable model integrating theology, education, and civic action. The study also acknowledges limitations, including limited institutional resources and the absence of empirical evaluation of long-term impacts.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the hidden meaning within the concept of Nūr Muḥammad as found in the Maulid ad-Dība‘ī, a classical Arabic literary work by ‘Abd ar-Raḥmān of Yemen, widely popular in Indonesia. Schleiermacher’s hermeneutics, which consists of grammatical and psychological interpretation, is employed as the analytical framework. Grammatical interpretation is conducted by examining the structure and linguistic choices in the text to uncover implicit meanings, while psychological interpretation delves into the author’s inner context through his biography, intellectual background, and spiritual environment. Utilizing a qualitative approach based on library research, the findings reveal that, grammatically, the concept of Nūr Muḥammad in Maulid ad-Dība‘ī is positioned as a primordial light that predates all prophets, including Prophet Ādam, and serves as a manifestation of the nobility of the Prophet Muḥammad. Psychologically, ad-Dība‘ī presents Muhammad not merely within a historical framework but also as the center of human existence and spirituality. More than a Sufi concept, Nūr Muḥammad in this work functions as a theological symbol that represents profound reverence for the Prophet and serves as a spiritual medium that radiates wisdom to those whose hearts are purified through love and the emulation of Muhammad.

Abstract

The viral dissemination of the AI-generated image “All Eyes on Rafah” has had a profound global impact, igniting widespread humanitarian concern and political discourse. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive interdisciplinary approach, drawing on Agenda Setting Theory (McCombs & Shaw), Marshall McLuhan’s media theory, and Alexander Wendt’s Constructivism to analyze this phenomenon. Primary data comprise viral news reports and social media images documenting the Israeli bombing of Rafah refugee camps, which resulted in approximately 55 civilian casualties. Data collection involved comprehensive reading, detailed note-taking, and thematic categorization, followed by analytical stages of restatement, description, and interpretation. The findings underscore the pivotal role of AI and social media in amplifying humanitarian crises, demonstrating how media agendas shape public perception and influence international political responses. This research advances the understanding of the interplay between digital media, political communication, and human rights advocacy, highlighting both the transformative potential and ethical complexities of AI-generated imagery in mobilizing global attention and action.
