Abstract

AI tools are increasingly used by university students to comprehend literary and cultural texts, but in Libya this use becomes sensitive when texts include religion, identity, and tradition, where misrepresentation may affect respect and classroom trust. This study aims to examine students’ perceptions of AI cultural sensitivity and the risks of bias in literature and culture learning at the University of Zawia. The study used a mixed-methods design, combining a questionnaire survey of 500 undergraduate students from the Faculties of Arts, Education, and Languages and Translation (124 males, 376 females) with semi-structured interviews with 10 lecturers. Survey findings show that AI use is common, with most students using AI at least weekly for text comprehension, cultural/historical context, writing support, and translation. Students reported moderate perceptions of AI cultural sensitivity, but high concern about misrepresentation, especially oversimplification of religious meanings, misunderstanding culture-specific terms, and biased framing. Students also showed a very strong preference for responsible-use governance, including verification practices, lecturer guidance, and AI literacy training. Faculty comparisons indicated higher perceived learning value among Languages and Translation students, while gender differences were minimal except for slightly stronger governance expectations among females. The study implies that AI can be integrated as a contextual support tool, but universities should provide clear guidelines and training to protect cultural respect and critical evaluation in sensitive topics.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the implementation of school religious activities, students’ apathy toward participation, and Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teacher strategies in strengthening sustainable character development aligned with SDGs principles, particularly SDG 4.7. Theoretical framework: This research applies the theoretical framework of character education, religious school culture, and humanistic pedagogy within Islamic education. Previous studies indicate that religious activities contribute significantly to moral development, although student participation is often influenced by motivation, family background, peer interaction, and digital lifestyles associated with contemporary SDGs educational challenges. Literature review: The literature review shows that religious activities in schools can shape students' character, but student involvement often varies and is influenced by motivational factors, family, social environment, and digital  culture. Methods: This study employed a qualitative descriptive case study approach using interviews, observations, and documentation analyzed through the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña interactive model. Results: The findings reveal that religious activities were implemented systematically through routine habituation, structured programs, and spontaneous spiritual practices. Nevertheless, several students demonstrated apathetic attitudes caused by internal psychological conditions and external social influences. PAI teachers addressed these conditions through persuasive communication, relational guidance, exemplary behavior, and collaborative educational approaches. Implications: The study implies that strengthening contextual, humanistic, and participatory Islamic education management is essential for sustainable student character formation and achievement of SDGs-oriented educational transformation. Novelty: The novelty of this study lies in its integrative analysis connecting school religious culture, student apathy, teacher intervention strategies, and sustainable character education within the broader framework of SDGs implementation in education sectors.

Abstract

The transformation of education in the Society 5.0 era requires the integration of digital technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and spiritual values in the learning process. Islamic Religious Education (IRE) is no longer focused solely on the conventional transfer of religious knowledge, but must also be capable of developing a Muslim generation that is adaptive, critical, creative, and spiritually grounded amid the rapid advancement of modern technology. This study aims to analyze the transformation of Islamic Religious Education based on Artificial Intelligence and digital literacy in strengthening the spirituality of the Muslim generation in the Society 5.0 era. This research employs a qualitative approach through library research and conceptual analysis of various scientific literature related to AI, digital literacy, Islamic education, and the development of digital society. The findings reveal that the integration of AI and digital literacy into Islamic Religious Education can enhance learning effectiveness, interactivity, personalization, and broader global access to Islamic education. However, this transformation must remain rooted in Islamic moral values, ethics, and spiritual development to ensure that technology does not diminish the essence of Islamic education itself. Therefore, a transformative Islamic education model is needed to balance technological advancement with character building and students’ spiritual development.

Abstract

Many Arabic language learners struggle to use the language effectively in Arab societies due to a limited understanding of Arab culture. This study explores the impact of the Lisan Al Arab linguistic immersion program on Arabic language acquisition and cultural awareness among professors at Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University in Malang. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with program participants and analyzed to identify patterns in language proficiency and cultural adaptation.  Findings show that the program significantly improved participants’ Arabic language skills, especially in fluency and confidence using the language in real-world contexts. Daily interaction with native speakers in natural linguistic environments played a key role, as did cultural activities such as visits to historical sites and participation in social events. These experiences deepened participants' understanding of Arab values and customs, reinforcing the cultural context of their language use. The study highlights supporting factors essential to the program’s success, including high-quality teaching, an engaging learning atmosphere, and opportunities for practical communication. Challenges were also noted, particularly in the early stages, such as adapting to local dialects and fast-paced conversations. Overall, the research concludes that immersion programs in Arab societies effectively enhance both linguistic and cultural competence among Arabic language educators.

Abstract

This study aims to systematically examine the concepts, theories, and practices of multimodal learning media innovation as a strategy for improving the quality of 21st-century learning. This study uses a library research method by examining various scientific sources such as journals, proceedings, and textbooks that discuss the integration of print, audiovisual, and computer technology media. The results of the study show that multimodal learning is based on the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and the social semiotics approach, which emphasises the importance of combining various modes of communication in constructing meaningful understanding. The integration of print, audiovisual, and computer technology media produces pedagogical synergy that can strengthen motivation, improve cognitive effectiveness, and support collaborative and independent learning. The application of multimodality in learning media design has been proven to support the development of 21st-century competencies such as critical thinking, creativity, communication, and digital literacy. Thus, multimodal learning media can become a strategic foundation for the renewal of a modern education system that is adaptive to technological developments and the learning needs of students.

Abstract

The learning of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) aims to nurture students who are devoted to Allah SWT, possess strong faith, exhibit commendable moral character, and have a sound understanding of Islamic teachings, particularly in relation to core principles and sources. The role of Islamic Religious Education teachers extends beyond merely imparting knowledge; it encompasses the transmission of values that shape students' behavior in alignment with Islamic teachings. This includes fostering an understanding of both personal and social piety—where personal piety pertains to individual worship, and social piety is reflected in empathetic and socially responsible behavior. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing primary and secondary data sources collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Findings indicate that Islamic Religious Education teachers at Raudhotul Qur'an Middle School play a vital role in internalizing social virtues among students. This is achieved through a structured value internalization process, beginning with the Value Transformation Stage—utilizing advice, role modeling, and disciplinary methods—followed by the Value Transaction Stage, which includes demonstrations and further modeling. The outcomes highlight a positive impact, evidenced by enhanced social awareness, increased empathy, and improved communication skills among students at TMII Raudhotul Qur'an Middle School.

Abstract

Dutch colonialism extended beyond political and economic domination, aiming also to control religious and cultural spheres through education and the promotion of Latin scripts. The central problem this study addresses is how K.H. Sholeh Darat employed religious and cultural practices as strategies of resistance against colonial hegemony. This study aims to analyze the forms of cultural resistance employed by K.H. Sholeh Darat within the framework of James C. Scott’s Hidden Transcript theory. This research uses a library-based method with a qualitative analytical approach. Data analysis is conducted using the framework of Hidden Transcript to explore the interplay among public transcripts, hidden transcripts, and everyday forms of resistance. The findings reveal that K.H. Sholeh Darat’s use of Arabic Pegon in his Islamic texts served as a medium for transmitting religious values embedded with implicit messages of Islamic nationalism. This symbolic resistance effectively preserved local identity and fostered cultural and national consciousness among Javanese Muslims. In conclusion, Sholeh Darat’s resistance was non-confrontational yet ideologically powerful, affirming James C. Scott’s theory that dominated groups can construct hidden spaces of resistance through symbolic and cultural expressions in everyday life.

Abstract

Background: Studies on the Islamization of knowledge have been widely developed within Islamic education, particularly in relation to epistemological and pedagogical frameworks. However, empirical research examining how Islamic values are integrated into the management practices of government bureaucracy remains relatively limited, especially from the perspective of Islamic educational management. Purpose: This study aims to analyse how Islamic values in knowledge are integrated into the management of the civil service (ASN) from the perspective of Islamic education management in East Kotawaringin Regency. Method: This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with civil servants, observations of organizational activities, and analysis of policy documents related to ASN management. The data were analysed thematically through the processes of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Findings: The findings reveal that the integration of Islamic values in ASN management is reflected in leadership practices emphasizing trustworthiness and responsibility, the development of civil servant competencies based on Islamic work ethics, and the formation of organizational culture through spiritual guidance activities in the workplace. However, the internalization of religious values within bureaucratic governance remains largely normative and has not been fully institutionalized in organizational management mechanisms such as performance evaluation systems, organizational regulations, and bureaucratic accountability frameworks. These findings indicate a gap between the discourse of religious values in bureaucratic leadership and their structural implementation in governance systems.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to develop a dual-method learning model integrating Hisab and Rukyat to improve students’ understanding, critical thinking, and attitudes toward religious diversity. Theoretical framework: The study is based on constructivist learning theory and Design-Based Research (DBR), emphasizing active learning, comparison, and reflective understanding. Literature review: Previous studies show that separate teaching of Hisab and Rukyat often causes fragmented understanding and confusion among students in Islamic education. Methods: This study uses a qualitative DBR approach through curriculum analysis, teacher interviews, and classroom observations in Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama institutions. Results: The findings reveal that segregated teaching of Hisab and Rukyat results in fragmented student comprehension and confusion regarding Islamic calendar determination. In contrast, the implementation of an integrated dual-method pedagogical model enhances students’ conceptual understanding by enabling them to compare and evaluate both approaches simultaneously. The model also promotes critical thinking skills and encourages more inclusive and moderate religious attitudes among students. Implications: The study provides an innovative teaching approach that supports inclusive Islamic education and reduces misunderstandings between different methodologies. Novelty: The novelty of this research is the development of a dual-method pedagogical model that combines Hisab and Rukyat in one integrated classroom learning system.
