Abstract

This article aims to explore the critical urgency of psychology within the Islamic paradigm and demonstrate how its systematic integration can strengthen the comprehensive and balanced nature of Islamic educational objectives. The study adopts a qualitative research design utilizing a literature review approach, with data analysis guided by the six-phase thematic analysis model to synthesize concepts from classical Islamic scholars and contemporary psychology. The findings confirm that psychology serves as a foundational element across all educational dimensions, including the formulation of goals, curriculum design, and teaching methodologies. Specifically, psychological insights are essential for understanding and nurturing fitrah (natural disposition), aligning educational goals with developmental stages, and promoting the spiritual purification process (tazkiyatun nafs). The discussion demonstrates that this integration results in a holistic development model that effectively balances the cognitive ('aql), affective (nafs), and spiritual (ruh) intelligence of students. Ultimately, the systematic incorporation of educational psychology ensures that Islamic schooling successfully equips learners with intellectual competence, strong moral character, and spiritual devotion, enabling them to contribute positively to society in accordance with Islamic principles.

Abstract

This study examines productive zakat not merely as a managerial instrument for economic empowerment, but as a manifestation of contemporary Islamic legal ijtihād (independent legal reasoning) shaped by divergent jurisprudential paradigms. Situated within the framework of comparative madhhab studies, this research analyzes how differences in legal reasoning between LAZISNU—rooted in the Shāfiʿī legal tradition—and LAZISMU—characterized by a reformist approach grounded in tajdīd (renewal) and tarjīḥ (legal preference)—influence the formulation and implementation of productive zakat practices in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative juridical-empirical method, the study draws on in-depth interviews with zakat administrators and institutional documents from LAZISNU and LAZISMU operating in Java and Bali. The findings reveal that the transformation of zakat from consumptive distribution to productive utilization is legitimized through distinct modes of istidlāl (legal reasoning or inferential deduction), wherein LAZISNU emphasizes adherence to authoritative Shāfiʿī doctrines, particularly concerning the principle of tamlīk (transfer of ownership to beneficiaries), while LAZISMU adopts a more flexible form of ijtihād that prioritizes maqāṣid al-sharīʿah (the higher objectives of Islamic law) and socio-economic outcomes. This divergence reflects an ongoing dialectic within contemporary Islamic legal thought regarding the boundaries of zakat utilization. By integrating empirical practices with cross-madhhab legal analysis, this study contributes to the development of comparative fiqh al-zakāt (Islamic jurisprudence of zakat) and demonstrates how modern philanthropic institutions negotiate classical legal doctrines within heterogeneous socio-legal contexts such as Java and Bali.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of a holistic approach in implementing religious moderation education to cultivate balanced thinking and tolerant attitudes among students within the domain of Islamic education. Grounded in Islamic values that emphasize moderation, inclusivity, justice, and intellectual equilibrium, the research employs a qualitative phenomenological design to explore the lived experiences of students, teachers, principals, and parents in schools that explicitly adopt a holistic-based moderation framework. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and systematic document analysis, and were analyzed thematically to identify recurring meanings, patterns, and contextual interpretations. The findings indicate that integrating intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions significantly contributes to the development of inclusive, empathetic, dialogical, and critically reflective learners. Instructional practices such as project-based learning, cross-cultural engagement, collaborative inquiry, and value-oriented dialogue effectively connect cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains in meaningful learning experiences. Teachers play a pivotal role in modeling moderation values and facilitating participatory learning environments that strengthen emotional intelligence, mutual respect, and social cohesion within diverse classrooms and communities. The study further demonstrates that holistic moderation education positively influences students’ character formation, interpersonal competence, ethical awareness, and religious maturity, enhancing their resilience against radical, intolerant, and exclusionary ideologies in contemporary societies and educational contexts. Despite its context-bound scope and interpretive nature, this research proposes an integrated conceptual framework that bridges academic achievement and character development, offering theoretical enrichment and practical guidance for educators and policymakers seeking to design inclusive education models that promote tolerance and prevent extremism in pluralistic societies globally.

Abstract

A major issue in classical fiqh is gender representation, where women are often positioned subordinate to men. Masāil al-Nisā’ constructs female identities and domestic roles through the repetition of socio-religious norms. This study analyzes the construction of gender in Masāil al-Nisā’ using the performativity theory of Judith Butler. It reveals how fiqh legitimizes binary norms, naturalizes masculine authority, and religiously reproduces women’s subordination within domestic and marital hierarchies. Employing a descriptive qualitative-interpretative approach, thematic analysis, and Butler’s gender performativity theory, the research analyzes primary texts and supporting literature to uncover constructions of women’s roles, identities, and subordination in domestic contexts. The study on Masāil al-Nisāʾ finds that women’s access to the public sphere is conditional and necessity-based with unclear moral regulation. Textual prohibitions against imitating the opposite sex reinforce binary gender divisions. Women are positioned as inherently domestic supporters of husbands or fathers with limited public roles. Although balance is emphasized, male authority in final decisions results in concealed gender subordination. This study concludes that Masāil al-Nisāʾ constructs a normative and hierarchical gender framework, conditionally granting women public space while consistently positioning men as the primary authority, thereby producing covert subordination in gender relations based on religious legitimacy. This study enriches Islamic gender studies, critiques the concept of women's nature (kodrat), state ibuism, and promotes critical reading of fiqh texts.

Abstract

This study examines how madrasah principals' leadership practices and school culture shape teacher performance in Muhammadiyah schools in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. While previous studies have extensively addressed leadership and school culture, evidence remains limited regarding the specific mechanisms by which faith-based leadership in Muhammadiyah madrasahs is manifested and experienced at the school level, particularly outside of key areas. Addressing this gap is crucial because leadership and culture are practical levers for strengthening teacher development and maintaining school quality in a values-based educational environment. This study employed a qualitative multiple case study design in three Muhammadiyah madrasahs in South Sulawesi. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with participants (madrasah principals, vice-principals, and teachers) who were purposively selected based on criteria such as position, minimum tenure, integration into professional development programs, and non-participant observation and document analysis (e.g., school policies and professional development records). Data were analyzed using thematic analysis through iterative coding, theme development, and cross-case comparison. Findings indicate that principals support teacher performance through (1) structured professional development planning (e.g., training/workshops aligned with teacher needs), (2) instructional supervision and feedback routines, (3) cultivating a collaborative culture (peer support, shared problem-solving), and (4) recognition practices that strengthen motivation and commitment. Based on these themes, we recommend strengthening needs-based professional development cycles, institutionalizing regular feedback and supervision protocols, and implementing transparent recognition criteria aligned with agreed-upon performance indicators.

Abstract

The phenomenon of workers in factories has become a real reality. Women as a living entity have become part of the family's economic life, but the spirit of work for women is part of religious expression. Work ethic, religion and regulations are part of the life of women factory workers in Kudus. This research aimed to observe the religious spirit embedded inside work ethic of female workers at PT. Rokok Djarum Kudus and the relationship of work ethic with religious fanatics that are part of women's lives. According to Sjafri Sairin's economic exchange and Mudrajad Kuntjoro's work ethic theories by qualitative analysis cross collected data by interviews, observations with purposive sampling, and documentation are the main parts of the study’s exploration. The research findings show that the very strict regulations from the company do not make them give up on their work but remain enthusiastic about building a productive work ethic. The work ethic of these female workers is evident in their daily factory work and their religious practices, both at work and at home. These female workers are able to provide a decent living for their families and the companies they work for.

Abstract

Hadiths concerning conjuring or ruqyah constitute a significant theme in hadith studies, particularly regarding issues of authenticity in both isnād and matn. Divergent perspectives between classical and modern scholars on the validity of these traditions underscore the necessity for a more nuanced and critical analysis. This study investigates the origin and transmission of the jampi-jampi (incantation) hadiths using the isnād-cum-matn analytical framework pioneered by Harald Motzki. Employing a qualitative methodology through literature-based research, data were sourced from canonical hadith collections such as Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, and Sunan Abī Dāwūd, along with contemporary scholarship in hadith criticism. Through descriptive-analytical techniques, this study maps the transmission chains (asānīd), evaluates narrator reliability, and compares textual variants of the matn. The findings reveal that while variations exist in wording, the jampi-jampi hadiths possess multiple strong lines of transmission. Motzki’s method proves instrumental in uncovering the historical strata of hadith development, demonstrating that the majority of ruqyah-related traditions can be traced reliably to the generation of the tābi‘īn. This study contributes to the field of hadith methodology by reinforcing the importance of integrated textual and transmission analysis and offers deeper contextual insight into the normative role of ruqyah within Muslim religious practice.[Hadis-hadis tentang jampi atau ruqyah merupakan tema penting dalam studi hadis, khususnya dalam hal keotentikan baik dari sisi sanad maupun matan.

Abstract

This study aims to examine classical and orientalist approaches to Islamic law, with a focus on the development and influence of Joseph Schacht’s theories. It explores Schacht’s understanding of the origins of Islamic jurisprudence, especially hadith, and their impact on Islamic law. This is a qualitative study based on library research. The results of this research show that Schacht uses a socio-historical approach to understanding Islamic law, emphasizing that the development of Islamic law is greatly influenced by the social and cultural context. Schacht argues that many hadith were codified in the early second century of the Hijra and that many of them were the result of reconstructions that emerged as a result of debates among early Islamic legal schools. This opinion has been challenged by various Muslim academics who are trying to prove that hadith have been written and transmitted since the time of the Prophet, both orally and in writing. Therefore, further research that focuses on analyzing hadith manuscripts that have not been translated is needed to provide a deeper understanding of the process of recording hadith and the development of Islamic law.
