Abstract

This study examined the relationship between reading motivation and English literacy achievement among EFL learners. A quantitative correlational design was employed, using a reading motivation questionnaire and a standardized English literacy test administered to 30 intermediate-level students. Descriptive analysis showed that students demonstrated high literacy performance with moderate variability in reading motivation. Pearson correlation and simple linear regression revealed that reading motivation significantly predicted literacy achievement (R = 0.512, R² = 0.262, p = 0.004), indicating that 26.2% of the variance in literacy scores could be explained by motivation levels. Furthermore, an independent-samples t-test revealed no significant difference in literacy performance between male and female students (t = 0.925, p = 0.363). These findings highlight the central role of motivation in supporting literacy development in EFL contexts, suggesting that teaching practices should prioritize developing reading motivation. The study concluded that motivation is a key psychological factor influencing literacy outcomes, while gender plays no significant role in determining literacy achievement.

Abstract

The global educational paradigm has moved beyond knowledge transmission to focus on holistic competencies, a transition mirrored in Indonesia’s Merdeka Curriculum with its emphasis on contextual relevance, learner differentiation, and the Pancasila Student Profile. Within English language education, this mandates a pedagogical reorientation, for which Culturally Responsive English Teaching (CRET) presents a critical framework, positioning students’ cultural backgrounds as foundational assets for instruction. As the primary agents of this reform, teachers’ capacity to implement CRET is paramount, with the Teacher Professional Education Program (PPG) serving as a key conduit for professional readiness. However, the specific preparedness of PPG graduates, a cohort strategically trained for curricular innovation, remains empirically unverified. This quantitative correlational study investigates the relationships between PPG graduates’ psychological dispositions (interest, motivation, self-efficacy), their general instructional practices, and the quality of CRET implementation within the Merdeka Curriculum. Data from purposively sampled Indonesian EFL teachers (n=121) were analyzed to determine correlational strength and predictive power. Results revealed that while descriptive levels of interest, motivation, self-efficacy, and CRET-aligned practices were high, only self-efficacy and instructional practices demonstrated significant positive correlations with implementation quality. Notably, multiple regression analysis identified self-efficacy as the strongest positive predictor, whereas interest emerged as a significant negative predictor when other variables were controlled. This counterintuitive finding suggests that isolated theoretical interest, without corresponding practical competence or contextual support, may not translate into effective classroom enactment, suggesting potential contextual or translational barriers between disposition and enactment. The findings underscore the complexity of translating pedagogical commitment into practice, highlighting that systemic professional development must extend beyond fostering theoretical interest to strategically building applied, context-specific competence and efficacy. Consequently, PPG programs should prioritize experiential learning, such as mentored practicums focused on CRT, to bridge the gap between pedagogical interest and actionable skill.

Abstract

Cupak Gerantang is a traditional folktale from Lombok that tells the story of two young men, Cupak and Gerantang. The narrative emphasizes the importance of avoiding negative traits and practicing virtuous behavior, making it a potential medium for promoting character education from an early age. However, the folklore faces several limitations, including limited audience reach, lengthy performance duration, use of local language, and visualizations that are less suitable for children. To address these challenges, this study aimed to adapt the Cupak Gerantang folktale into child-friendly digital comic characters. The research employed a design-based approach by adapting the vehicle transfer model, which consists of four stages: (1) ekranization, transferring characters and moral values into narrative and visual designs; (2) shrinkage, simplifying story elements and adjusting visuals to suit children; (3) addition and variation, modifying the storyline, setting, characterization, and visual style to enhance appeal; and (4) limited trials with 15 elementary school students. The trial results showed that most students responded positively to the illustrations, color schemes, and plot, confirming that the moral values had been effectively conveyed, and they expressed interest in reading the complete digital comic version. These findings suggest that the development of digital comic adaptations of characters from local folklore has potential as an innovative educational medium to support character education and foster appreciation for local wisdom in the digital age.

Abstract

This research explores the relationship between the use of YouTube as a learning medium and student motivation in learning English at SMAN 7 Bulukumba. This research uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The sample consisted of 50 eleventh-grade students. The instrument used was a closed-ended questionnaire containing 20 statements, measuring two main variables: YouTube utilization and learning motivation, using a 4-point Likert scale. Descriptive analysis results showed that both variables were in the high category, with an average score of 36.48 for YouTube utilization and 36.16 for learning motivation. The Pearson product-moment correlation test revealed a strong and significant positive relationship between the two variables (r = 0.645; p = 0.001). This indicates that the effective use of YouTube can enhance students' learning motivation, both from intrinsic and extrinsic aspects, such as interest, self-confidence, independence, and active participation in learning.

Abstract

The urgent need to mitigate atmospheric CO2 and transition toward renewable energy has spurred growing interest in photocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation. In this work, we report on the fabrication of a novel 3D/1D NH2-MIL-125/TiO2 nanowire (NWs) heterostructure via a straightforward mechanical assembly method, combining the excellent visible light absorption of amino-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the robust charge transport properties of one-dimensional TiO2 NWs. Structural and optical characterisations have confirmed on intimate interfacial contact and synergistic electronic interactions between the MOF and TiO2, forming an S-scheme heterojunction which promotes an enhanced photogenerated carrier separation. Under visible light, the optimised 5 wt% NH2-MIL-125/TiO2 NWs composite achieved methane and CO yields of 13.98 μmol/g and 84.76 μmol/g, respectively. Notably, CH4 production soared to 660.47 μmol/g under solar-simulated irradiation, representing a 47-fold enhancement. This significant performance boost is attributed to improved light harvesting, facilitated electron migration, and strengthened interfacial dynamics. This study provides a scalable and efficient strategy for designing hybrid MOF-semiconductor photocatalysts, offering a promising pathway for sustainable solar fuel generation.
