Abstract

This study explores the challenges faced by teachers in implementing interactive speaking strategies for low-level students in the Speaking for Teens classes at Britania School of English (BSE). A qualitative case study design was employed to examine teachers’ experiences in real classroom contexts. The participants consisted of three English teachers, supported by nine students from three classes. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing, and thematic analysis. The findings revealed that teachers encountered several challenges during interactive speaking activities, including noise distractions caused by classroom arrangements, student fatigue during after-school sessions, difficulties in understanding instructions, classroom management issues during games and group work, and the need to adjust activities to match students’ low English proficiency. These challenges were influenced by environmental, affective, linguistic, and pedagogical factors. The study concludes that difficulties in implementing interactive speaking strategies stem largely from contextual and learner-related factors rather than weaknesses in the strategies themselves; therefore, teachers need to carefully plan, adapt, and manage interactive activities by considering students’ proficiency levels, classroom conditions, and emotional readiness to support effective speaking instruction.

Abstract

This qualitative case study investigates how three master students in the English Language Education Program at Universitas Negeri Makassar implement ChatGPT to support critical thinking in academic writing. Data were collected through triangulation of four sources, direct observations, semi-structured interviews, self-reflective journals, and documentation, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman's (1994) interactive model of data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing, guided by Paul and Elder's (2019) critical thinking framework and Hyland's (2018) academic writing framework. Findings reveal that students implement ChatGPT systematically across four writing stages: brainstorming and idea development, argument development and organization, information verification and validation, and comparative evaluation with traditional methods. The study's key contribution is its empirical demonstration that effective ChatGPT implementation functions as a cognitive scaffold that enhances rather than replaces critical thinking, provided students engage purposefully, verify outputs against academic sources, and adapt, rather than adopt, AI-generated content. These findings offer practical guidance for pedagogy and institutional policy on responsible AI integration in graduate academic writing.

Abstract

The study aimed to find out the teachers’ challenges in implementing differentiated instruction and deep learning approach in vocational EFL classrooms. This research used a qualitative method design where consist of 5 teachers selected through purposive sampling technique. Data collection involved the classroom observations and teacher’s interview while researcher recorded their answer to get more detailed information about the phenomenon being studied. The data was analyzed by using the reflexive Thematic Analysis (TA) criteria which consists of some steps, begin from familiarization with data, coding, generating initial themes, developing and reviewing themes until presenting a detailed teacher’s reflexive journals. The findings revealed that teachers still lack of experience in implementing differentiated instruction through deep learning approach in their classrooms. Not only that, some teachers also still confused on how to accommodate a diverse array of student needs, interests, and ability levels which were the most important thing in differentiated instruction implementation and also deep learning where both of those approaches can encourage students to explore content deeply, think critically, and apply their learning in meaningful contexts which is necessity for preparing learners for the challenges of the future. However, successful implementation requires sustained effort, investment in technology, and continuous professional development. Practically, this research will help educators, teachers, authorized bodies, students, and researchers to know the challenges that hinder successful implementation of differentiated instruction especially for English subject in vocational high school.

Abstract

Abstract

This research explores the relationship between the use of YouTube as a learning medium and student motivation in learning English at SMAN 7 Bulukumba. This research uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The sample consisted of 50 eleventh-grade students. The instrument used was a closed-ended questionnaire containing 20 statements, measuring two main variables: YouTube utilization and learning motivation, using a 4-point Likert scale. Descriptive analysis results showed that both variables were in the high category, with an average score of 36.48 for YouTube utilization and 36.16 for learning motivation. The Pearson product-moment correlation test revealed a strong and significant positive relationship between the two variables (r = 0.645; p = 0.001). This indicates that the effective use of YouTube can enhance students' learning motivation, both from intrinsic and extrinsic aspects, such as interest, self-confidence, independence, and active participation in learning.

Abstract

This study investigated the implementation of the Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) Cake application in supporting EFL students' speaking practice at Al Ikhlas Islamic Boarding School Ujung Bone. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was used. Quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire administered to 35 tenth-grade students who had used the Cake application, followed by semi-structured interviews with seven selected participants. The findings indicate that students perceived the application as a useful tool for speaking practice because it increased motivation and self-confidence, reduced speaking anxiety, and encouraged positive attitudes toward technology-assisted language learning. Students also valued its engaging materials, interactive speaking activities, pronunciation feedback, and flexible access, which supported more frequent practice beyond the classroom. The study concludes that the Cake application can serve as a complementary MALL tool for supporting speaking practice in EFL contexts by promoting motivation, confidence, and active engagement. However, the findings represent students’ perceptions rather than objectively measured improvements in speaking performance.

Abstract

This Background: Impact and washback—the influence of language tests on teaching, learning, curriculum, and society—are recognized as core qualities of language test usefulness (Phakiti, 2016; Bachman & Palmer, 1996). Despite three decades of scholarship since Alderson and Wall's (1993) foundational work, no PRISMA-compliant systematic review has synthesized the full scope of this literature incorporating post-2020 empirical developments and emerging digital assessment contexts. Objectives: To systematically map the theoretical landscape of impact and washback research, synthesize recent empirical evidence (2020–2025), and identify emerging frontiers including digital and AI-assisted assessment washback. Methods: A systematic narrative synthesis following PRISMA 2020 guidelines (Page et al., 2021). Databases searched: ERIC, Scopus, Google Scholar, Springer Nature Link, Wiley Online Library, and JSTOR. Eligibility criteria: peer-reviewed studies in English or Indonesian; focus on language test impact, washback, or related assessment consequences; publication 2000–2025 with particular emphasis on 2020–2025. Results: Of 247 records identified, 51 studies met inclusion criteria after full-text screening. Findings indicate a shift from linear test-cause models to stakeholder-ecological frameworks (Rahman et al., 2023), suggest that teacher beliefs and assessment literacy function as key mediating variables in washback, and document emerging washback phenomena in digital and AI-assisted assessment contexts (Jang & Sawaki, 2025). Notably, the corpus is geographically concentrated in Asian contexts, which should be considered when interpreting the generalizability of findings. Conclusions: Washback is a complex, multi-stakeholder phenomenon whose direction appears closely associated with teacher assessment literacy, institutional culture, and test construct breadth. Equity-centered assessment reform, responsible AI assessment design, and sustained teacher professional development are identified as high-leverage interventions for promoting positive washback, with particular relevance to the Indonesian EFL context.
