Abstract

The Hagarism theory developed by Michael Cook and Patricia Crone claims that Islam is the result of assimilation from Jewish, Christian, and pre-Islamic Arab cultural traditions. The Prophet Muhammad is accused of being the founder of a reform movement inspired by Judaism, which He and His followers were initially seen as part of a broader monotheistic tradition, before eventually formin a separate religious identity calling itself Muslims. This study aims to examine the Hagarism theory from the perspective of religious syncretism to assess the claim that the Qur'an and Hadith are products of the fusion of previous religions. This research employs a critical analysis method by reviewing the primary sources used by Cook and Crone and comparing them with Islamic historiography. The approach applied includes a literature review of orientalist texts and counterarguments from Muslim scholars. The findings indicate that the Hagarism theory has methodological weaknesses, as it relies on non-Muslim sources while disregarding Islamic traditions. The syncretic approach used in this theory also tends to overlook the originality of Islamic teachings.

Abstract

Beauty is a quality greatly appreciated for its ability to soothe the heart and delight the eye. In art, beauty manifests through the cultural and spiritual expression of humanity. Visual arts, such as painting and photography, serve not only as adornments but also as mediums for conveying messages and emotions, linking personal expression with collective experiences. However, a hadith of the Prophet Muhammad SAW suggests that Islam does not sanction painting, stating that those who engage in it will face severe punishment in the afterlife. This necessitates a detailed and nuanced interpretative study of the hadith. This research adopts a thematic approach to analyse the hadith by reviewing its texts and related literature. Contextualisation is achieved by examining the historical context of the hadith and applying a hermeneutic method from Fazlur Rahman’s perspective, specifically through the concept of double movement. This method aims to clarify the context and purpose behind the prohibition of painting. The study explores how the hadith’s interpretation can be adjusted to fit modern social contexts and address potential misconceptions in contemporary art practices. The findings indicate that the prohibition is primarily aimed at preventing idolatry and worship. By using Fazlur Rahman’s perspective, it becomes evident that, within a modern context, painting does not necessarily involve worship and can be accepted as a form of creative expression. This highlights the need to adapt Islamic legal interpretations to social changes while maintaining core religious principles, thereby reducing misunderstandings in the development of contemporary art.

Abstract

There is inequality in educational outcomes in terms of graduate behavior such as brawls, corruption, free sex, drugs, theft and other deviant behavior. In fact, several immoral acts were allegedly carried out by the madrasah. Ideally, madrasah students have good behavior because these schools are given more responsibility for educational material than other institutions. Seeing this problem, the government decided that character education should be implemented in schools. This research is feasible for managing character education in madrasas effectively starting from planning, organizing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating. The series of management functions are carried out sequentially with each other, so that the expected character values can be internalized in students' lives with indicators; students know the character, feel the character and are able to do it. Supervision activities focus more on ensuring that activities are carried out in accordance with the plans made at the beginning, while evaluation activities look more at the success of what has been implemented compared to the plans made in advance. Students do not have to be given quantitative grades but what is more important is how far from the integrated values have been internalized in madrasa life

Abstract

This study explores the role of spatiality in the Qur’anic narrative of Prophet Moses, examining six central locations, Egypt, the river, the palace, Midian, the sea, and Mount Ṭur as transformative stages in the prophetic journey.  Drawing upon classical Qur’anic exegesis and Gadamerian hermeneutics, the research employs a textual-analytical approach to explore how each place functions not merely as a geographical site but as a locus of divine pedagogy and existential formation. The study addresses a gap in Qur’anic studies and educational philosophy by highlighting how spatial interpretation reveals the pedagogical dimensions of prophetic experience and the construction of spiritual identity. Through this lens, the paper contributes to developing a Qur’anic philosophy of sacred space and deepens understanding of divine education in the Qur’anic worldview.

Abstract

Western scholars’ studies on the historicity of the Qur’an have been ongoing since the 12th century to the present day. In their development, some of these studies tend to undermine Islam by employing source criticism and tradition criticism to cast doubt on the authenticity of the Qur’an in early Islamic history. This article aims to examine the debate between revisionist-skeptical and academic-dialogical groups regarding the historicity of the Qur’an. Using qualitative-descriptive methods and critical data analysis, this article finds that studies conducted by revisionist-skeptical scholars such as Abraham Geiger and John Wansbrough view the Qur’an as an imitative text of previous texts and parallel to the Hadith. However, the studies of these revisionist-skeptical scholars are countered by Angelika Neuwirth and Fred M. Donner, as part of the academic-dialogical group. They reject and refute this view by pointing out methodological weaknesses and ideological biases that lead to erroneous conclusions by the revisionists. It is due to initial assumptions based on a negative perspective and a polemical-apologetic attitude towards Islam. They offer a more open and positive approach to Islam. The theoretical implications of these two major schools of thought demonstrate that the initial paradigm for viewing the Qur’an significantly influences the results and direction of research. This article contributes to enriching the study of Orientalism by opening up a more objective, constructive, and relevant scientific dialogue for the development of Qur’anic studies in the contemporary era.

Abstract

This study aims to re-evaluate the offer of maqāṣidī interpretation in resolving the ecological crisis caused by the anthropocentric paradigm. This study uses a qualitative method to analyze the philosophy and interpretation products of maqāṣidī tafsir through primary sources such as the works of figures who first formulated maqāṣid of the Qur'an as the philosophy of maqāṣidī tafsir and applied it in interpretation products; among them are Rashid Rida and Ṭāhir Ibn 'Āshūr. Based on this evidence, the findings reveal that there is inconsistency in maqāṣidī interpretation in mediating the contestation between theocentric and anthropocentric paradigms, therefore, it can be said that maqāṣidī interpretation is more adapted to the modern context and its needs without a clear frame of reference, rather than referring to God's purpose, although the word maqāṣid is synonymous with God's purpose. As a result, maqāṣidī interpretation does not place meaning in the midst of the contestation of the two paradigms but prefers one of them accordingly fit to the context.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka to improve students' foreign language proficiency and examines the challenges faced by language teachers in its application within Acehnese schools. The selected schools represent diverse geographical contexts, including urban, suburban, and boarding schools, allowing for a comparative analysis of implementation strategies. In-depth, semi-structured interviews with ten foreign language teachers (English and Arabic), school principals, and staff provided qualitative data, supplemented by field notes, class discussion transcriptions, and textbook reviews. Findings show disparities in curriculum implementation by school type and location, with challenges including limited resources, insufficient training, and complexity, especially in under-resourced schools. However, the curriculum's student-centered, goal-oriented approach is seen as transformative for language classrooms. This study contributes to the literature on curriculum implementation and language education as well as providing insights for educational policymakers. It also provides practical recommendations for improving the integration of the Kurikulum Merdeka in Acehnese schools and ensuring its successful adoption in language education.

Abstract

Sexuality education in early childhood is an important aspect that is often overlooked or considered taboo in many cultures and societies. Proper sex education from an early age is essential to ensure children grow up with a proper understanding of their bodies, interpersonal relationships, and moral values related to sexuality. This study aims to reveal the importance of parents' role in early childhood sexuality education as a foundation in preventing violence and sexual abuse against children. The research method used is a literature study, by identifying, evaluating, and analyzing available information to answer predetermined research questions. The results showed that the family is the first informal educational institution for children, where the role of parents is very central in shaping children's character and behavior, including in terms of sexuality education. Parents are responsible for providing appropriate and relevant information according to the child's developmental stage, as well as instilling strong moral values. However, the main challenge faced by parents is the lack of knowledge and understanding of how to provide proper sex education, as well as the influence of the media that often presents information that is not suitable for children. In conclusion, sex education provided by parents from an early age has an important role in protecting children from the dangers of sexual violence and abuse, so efforts are needed to improve parents' knowledge in this regard.

Abstract

This article examines Muhammad Abduh's role in utilizing Sufism to build spiritual consciousness amid significant social changes in Egypt in the late 19th century. The main issue discussed was how Abduh combined the teachings of Sufism with social reform in the context of modernity, which is increasingly developing due to the influence of European colonialism and modernization pioneered by Muhammad Ali Pasha. This study explores how Abduh positioned Sufism as a moral tool supporting social reform. The method used is text analysis of Abduh's works and relevant secondary literature studies. The main findings show that Abduh has successfully integrated the spiritual dimension of Sufism with the demands of modernity, making Sufism a pillar to strengthen public morality and support harmonious social change. This article strongly recommends that further studies be conducted to understand how Abduh's approach to Sufism can be applied in contemporary social contexts that face similar challenges, as this could provide valuable insights for addressing current societal issues.
