Abstract

Hexagonal TiO2/SiO2 Porous Microplates have been successfully synthesized by incorporation of Ti precursors into SiO2 synthesized from Si precursors in a gelatin-CTAB mixture via the hydrothermal method. The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), EDX, nitrogen adsorption-desorption and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The sample has a surface area of 735 m2/g, pore volume of 0.67 cc/g, and pore diameter of 3.2 nm, according to the results of the characterization of hexagonal TiO2/SiO2 porous microplates. The transformation of SiO2 microspheres into hexagonal TiO2/SiO2 porous microplates is revealed by a microparticle size increase of 84% and the transition of Si−O bonds into Ti−O and Si−O as measured by FTIR. The photocatalytic activity of hexagonal TiO2/SiO2 porous microplates resulted in 81.15% photodegradation of methylene blue under UV light irradiation within 60 min, which was 21 % better than SiO2. Abstract

Two series of iron oxide nanoparticles with different textural and structural characteristics were synthesized using the sol-gel method. The iron oxide nanoparticles were made with synthetic (Pluronic P123 Amphiphilic Block Copolymer) and natural (gelatin) double templates and single P123 templates. The influences of the addition of the gelatin template on the microstructure, methylene blue degradation, and thermal photocatalyst regeneration were investigated. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD) examination revealed the formation of iron-P123-gelatin (iron oxide made with P123 and gelatin templates) and iron-P123 (iron oxide made with only P123 template) with hematite and maghemite phases, where the crystallinity and crystallite size increased due to the presence of gelatin. Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) studies indicated a peak at 500 cm−1, revealing the iron groups in both samples and increased intensity in the hydroxyl and carbonyl groups due to gelatin. Furthermore, the surface area, pore volume, and pore diameter of iron-P123-gelatin exhibited an increment due to gelatin addition. According to the Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Thermal Analyzer (DTA) data, the sample with gelatin had higher thermal stability and weight loss than that without gelatin. The photodegradation of methylene blue utilizing iron-P123-gelatin reached 91.5%, showing a better performance than that of iron-P123. Finally, iron-P123-gelatin demonstrated a promising photocatalyst thermal regeneration for methylene blue photodegradation for 5 cycles at various temperatures, and it is suggested that 450 °C was the ideal temperature. Abstract

Carbon-silica nanocomposites (CSNs) from gelatin as a carbon source and natural template and TEOS as a silica source have been successfully synthesized and impregnated into ZnO and TiO2 photocatalysts. The structural, morphological, and textural properties and photocatalytic activity for methylene blue degradation of TiO2/CSNs and ZnO/CSNs were investigated. XRD data revealed that TiO2/CSNs and ZnO/CSNs had different structural characteristics with similar crystallinity. FTIR spectra demonstrated the presence of Zn–O and Ti–OC bonds, respectively, at about 500-450 cm-1 and 1500 cm-1. The morphological surface exhibited stacked tubular shapes of TiO2/CSNs and ZnO/CSNs with the primary elements of Ti, Zn, Si, C, and O. The nitrogen adsorption-desorption curves revealed both micropores and mesopores of TiO2/CSNs and ZnO/CSNs where the surface area reduced due to the blocking pore after impregnation. Abstract

TiO2 material has an important position in the processing of methylene blue waste because it is economical, has abundant polymorphs, high sustainability and supports green chemistry applications. Mesoporous TiO2 is a porous material that has higher effectiveness than other TiO2 because the pore structure has a large diameter at the nano scale (2-50 nm) with a regular shape so that the surface area and pore volume are greater than the average for other TiO2. The synthesis of mesopore TiO2 material has so far used the sol-gel route with synthetic pore directing agents such as P123 which can be replaced with gelatin as a cheaper and safer pore directing agent with high sustainability and abundance. Based on the description above, this research aims to photodegrade methylene blue using mesoporous TiO2 (m-TiO2) nanoparticles which were prepared by the sol–gel method using gelatin and P123 as template. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Electron dispersive X-Ray (EDX), and UV–vis spectroscopy techniques were used to characterize the samples. Photocatalytic activities of samples for methylene blue degradation were investigated. The catalyst before and after regeneration will be studied so that the effect of regeneration on the results of methylene blue photocatalysis with m-TiO2 can be determined. XRD results confirmed the formation of the anatase and rutile phase for the TiO2 nanoparticles, with crystallite sizes larger after regeneration in the range of 9–21 nm. The large particle size was after regeneration due to the promotion by high temperature treatment. TiO2 nanoparticles showed the best photocatalytic activity on the first use to 91% and remained stable after four cycles with photodegradation efficiency up to 76% based on the measured UV-Vis spectroscopy. TiO2 as synthesis could be the best candidate for catalyst with the high performance after multicycle regeneration. Copyright © 2024 by Authors, Published by BCREC Publishing Group. Abstract

This study looks at how to sustainably develop ZnSO₄·H₂O (Gunningite) and ZnO (Wurtzite) nanoparticles using gelatin-based colloids, focusing on their ability to break down dyes. Zinc acetate and zinc sulfate heptahydrate were used as starting materials, with gelatin helping to stabilize the process. After heating at 550 °C for 4 hours, the nanoparticles were analyzed for their surface area and composition. Gunningite had a higher surface area of 61.5 m²/g, compared to Wurtzite’s 11.4 m²/g. Elemental analysis showed Gunningite contained 71% zinc, 21% oxygen, and 2% sulfur, while Wurtzite had 69% zinc and 31% oxygen. The photocatalytic activity was tested by degrading methylene blue under UV light. Gunningite had better results, achieving 87% degradation compared to Wurtzite's 72%. This was due to Gunningite’s larger surface area and smaller particle size, making it more effective for treating dye wastewater. Abstract

This study aims to synthesize and evaluate the photocatalytic performance of a modified mesoporous silica-based composite, Fe₂O₃/SPG₂₀–SO₃H, for methylene blue degradation. The catalyst was prepared via a soft-template method using P123 surfactant and gelatin as dual structure-directing agents. Characterization results confirmed the formation of Fe₂O₃ crystallites with a dominant size of 2.14 nm and crystallinity of 90.85%. FTIR spectra revealed the presence of –COOH, Si–O–Si, Si–OH, and –OH groups, while sulfonate-related bands (–SO₃H, O=S=O) were not observed in XRD patterns, suggesting amorphous or poorly crystalline sulfonic groups. SEM analysis indicated rod-like catalyst morphology. Photocatalytic testing under various temperatures showed that Fe₂O₃/SPG₂₀–SO₃H achieved the highest degradation efficiency at 70 °C, maintaining over 92.14 % efficiency for up to 120 minutes of contact time. Lower temperatures (5 °C and 15 °C) led to reduced and less stable degradation activity. These results indicate that both sulfonation and iron oxide impregnation, combined with optimal operating temperature, significantly enhance the photocatalytic performance of mesoporous silica systems, offering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution for dye-contaminated wastewater treatment. Abstract

This study explores the development of nanostructured photocatalytic materials based on cobalt–iron (CoFe1-2) and cobalt–nickel (CoNi1-1) systems for the degradation of methylene blue, a persistent organic pollutant commonly found in textile wastewater. As the textile industry contributes significantly to environmental pollution through the discharge of recalcitrant dyes, this work aims to offer an effective and sustainable solution via visible-light-driven photocatalysis. The synthesis strategy employed a hard-template approach using mesoporous silica-gelatin composite (SPG-20), prepared from a mixture of P123 and gelatin under acidic conditions. Following hydrothermal treatment and calcination, the SPG-20 template was acid-activated to enhance surface reactivity. Metal precursors—Co(NO₃)₂.6H₂O with either Fe(NO₃)₃.9H₂O or Ni(NO₃)₂.6H₂O—were infiltrated into the template with citric acid as a chelating and carbon-forming agent. The composite underwent controlled thermal treatment to embed metal species into a confined carbon matrix, followed by alkaline etching to remove the silica scaffold and yield CoFe1-2 and CoNi1-1 carbon nanostructures. Comprehensive characterizations, including XRD, FTIR, BET, UV-DRS, and UV–VIS spectroscopy, revealed that the materials exhibited nanocrystalline domains with low crystallinity and high specific surface area, favorable for photocatalytic activity. BET analysis indicated a greater surface area in CoFe1-2 (104.526 m²/g) than in CoNi1-1 (83.160 m²/g), correlating with a higher number of available active sites. The band gap of CoFe1-2 (1.180 eV) supports efficient visible-light absorption, which, coupled with its higher microporosity, enables superior methylene blue degradation (85% within 90 minutes) compared to CoNi1-1 (75%). Control experiments in the absence of light showed minimal degradation, confirming that the reaction is photocatalytic in nature. Adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-first-order model, with CoFe1-2 also exhibiting a higher adsorption capacity (171.184 mg/g). These findings demonstrate the potential of template-assisted synthesis in producing tunable, high-performance photocatalysts for practical applications in sustainable textile wastewater treatment. Abstract

This study aims to develop a photocatalyst combination of NiO, CuO and ZnO metal oxides modified with mesoporous silica gelatin (mSG) to overcome methylene blue (MB) dye waste through photodegradation process. The photocatalysts were synthesized using the hard template method with mSG as the matrix and tested for their performance towards MB degradation under ultraviolet light. Characterization results showed that the G-Ni-Cu-Zn photocatalyst has a larger surface area, better crystalline structure, nano particle size (~26 nm), and band gap energy of 3.16 eV compared to G-Ni-Zn which has a very low surface area, larger particle morphology (~0.46 μm), and band gap energy of 2.13 eV. Photodegradation tests showed a maximum degradation efficiency of 83.67% by G-Ni-Cu-Zn in 120 minutes, which is much higher than that of G-Ni-Zn.
